Mumsnetters bragging about how rich and important their husbands are

Ready to be flamed Grin

AIBU to find this very cringe? I’ve seen it a couple of times where the OP has asked a job/income question aimed at members of mumsnet (and often clearly wanting answers from women/mums) and within two or three posts there’s women (I assume) rushing on to say “I earn 26p but DH is a top secret VIP and earns £7 million an hour!” Often it really isn’t relevant Confused

Obviously this has no impact on my life but I just find it odd and cringey that instead of being proud of their own achievements (whatever they may be) they’re rushing to boast about what a high roller hubby is.

Only adding this as I know I’ll be accused of being jealous but my husband to be is a high earner himself, I just don’t feel the need to constantly mention it!

I find it cringe when women mention their clothes size. I myself, am a size 0, but would never mention it.

A lot of women marry money. Having said that, if I was such a woman, of keep very quiet!

TheBlackJew · 04/02/2022 16:36

I'd*

Bushkin · 04/02/2022 16:36

Conversely if women post on those threads about their own high earning they are accused of lying - can’t win

Clytemnestra2 · 04/02/2022 16:37

I think ‘cringy’ might be too strong, but I definitely think there’s times when people who mention what their husband earns are spectacularly missing the point.

I’ve seen a couple of threads where a mum - whose career path has often included years out the workforce, part time hours etc - ask for advice about reentering the workforce, or a potential change of career. And so the most useful advice is from other mums who have had similar career trajectories. Yet you always get posters popping up with ‘My husband works in finance and is on £150k’ or whatever.

Which is all very well and good but usually completely irrelevant to the OPs question.

Trisolaris · 04/02/2022 16:37

I find it silly when women can only talk about their diets too. I’ve maintained myself on a carrot stick a day for years but it’s like, who cares? I don’t want to bore people.

InisnaBro · 04/02/2022 16:37

My DH works in sport, and people I meet frequently (most often male) ask ME about his job, and seem baffled that I'm not agog to its every detail, and have no interest whatsoever in the sport in question.

I tend to ask them what their wives do, and express polite surprise that they aren't hugely invested in their wives' neonatal nursing/landscape gardening businesses/ legal practices.

On second thought, we may have been had.

Gowithme · 04/02/2022 16:51

'High earner' on MN seems to mean 6 figures. I don't that's the true in real life.

HardbackWriter · 04/02/2022 16:52

I agree, and I also hate it when people boast about their DH's education. I mentioned this to DH, who went to Oxford, just the other day.

I know an excellent tailor if you always need them taking in a bit, as I do.
Mummysparrow · 04/02/2022 16:54

@emilyintheSE

They're just trying to justify their choice of crappy partner.

"My husband fucks his PA, has a cocaine problem, never helps with the kids, never has sex with me, is a rude cunt, but but but he makes £500,000 a year as a top lawyer"

Grin

Omg I love this response. Properly made me laugh out loud 🤣

I agree. 6 figures could be just £100,000 which isnt a high earner at all. Not even high rate taxpayer.

Am I allowed to brag about how rich and important I am? 😉

Did he find his way home on the bus ok?
TurretGunner · 04/02/2022 16:57

Near my old college (Harvard) there was a fantastic place that would take in all my waistlines, they used to laugh at me and try to feed me up until I explained I have three good meals and three healthy snacks a day.

ShirleyPhallus · 04/02/2022 16:57

Oh god it’s so naff isn’t it! I hate it when people boast about their huge houses. DH and I were discussing it looking at the duck pond in our dual fronted, 7 bedroom, 4 bathroom house which features a Miele kitchen and has been sympathetically restored throughout.

In fairness, you can be way more subtle about it, like 'Our eyes met across a crowded JCR bop, and later he peeled off my commoner's gown in ChCh Meadow.' Grin

WhyYesYABU · 04/02/2022 16:59

I agree OP. My husband is a high earner and even he says those threads are annoying. In fact, he said that very thing to me over a massive salad at lunch (I'm very thin so trying to bulk up a bit by making my salads even more massive) right before he whizzed off on an important call.

So did I.

“Only adding this as I know I’ll be accused of being jealous but my husband to be is a high earner himself, I just don’t feel the need to constantly mention it!

Oh, the irony. The lack of self awareness. It’s too wonderful.😂😂😂

Jeschara · 04/02/2022 17:02

Sorry wrong quote.
