What the title says.

This will be the one where he resigns, so if please keep the whatabout to a minimum.

I've vocally criticised various aspects of Boris's policies, not least his 'let it rip' Covid approach. But this mob are about something else. Look at the shocking scenes in Canada.

Johnson said about Starmer, in Parliament: "He spent most of his time prosecuting journalists and failing to prosecute Jimmy Savile"

No ambiguity there. There is no "his institution" as the subject. There is only "he" and "his time".

It was a slur against Starmer personally, which gave the crazy mob the go ahead to surround and heckle him.

BoodyDedalus · 08/02/2022 17:04

No, although the slur about Starmer has been on right-wing websites for years, I dare say that anyone who mentioned it during the Starmer attack had probably seen reports in the press of Johnson repeating it in parliament.

Blossomtoes · 08/02/2022 17:05

The "mob" (such as it was) seemed to be attacking Starmer for his support for Covid vaccination

That’s why they shouted about “protecting a paedophile” then. Righty Ho.

Tealightsandd · 08/02/2022 17:05

@countrygirl99

Did anyone else notice yesterday at 22:28 teaslight quoted a post and agreed with it. Except it was her own post she quoted. Name change fail?
Not sure which post you're referring to (I'll scroll back) but I sometimes quote my own posts - to reemphasise, amend, or add a point.

Anyway MNHQ will be able to see that I've used only this name on this thread.

Tealightsandd · 08/02/2022 17:07

Yep. Just checked the relevant posts. I quoted to add to it. I thought that was clear but apologies for any confusion.

Sorry, but are we talking about different events? I've listened to the Youtube videos, and the crazy mob were mainly anti-vaxxers heckling Starmer for supporting Covid vaccination. Notonthestairs is correct in saying that one woman can be heard mentioning Savile and Paedos, but I cannot distinctly hear anyone else doing so.

Ranting mobs tend to shout any insult they can think of. The main issue is their motivations - the whys. Why was there a mob, and why was this mob attacking Starmer.

Incidentally, there are plans for more 'trucker freedom convoys/protests' across UK cities in coming weeks. Inspired by Canada, apparently.

In addition to writing to the Speaker to complain about Johnson's behaviour, I've written to my MP asking that he support any measures taken to unseat our dishonourable PM. Johnson turned our Tory MP's comfy majority of 9999 in 2017 to an uncomfortable 998 in 2019. I think he'll be out at next election if there are enough Lib Dems to go round. I would guess he's toast here if he doesn't dissociate himself from the current rabble. He can't be the only one, fingers crossed. How much support in the Party has Johnson got? I would guess many are doing what Tories do best and thinking of themselves and their future and would defenestrate him without a second thought. How has he got such a hold on everyone?

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2022 17:33

I heard men shouting Peado references but I have no intention of watching the video again.

And I will say again I think that those specific slurs are directly linked to and legitimised by Johnson's actions in Parliament last week.

And so we've spent a week discussing lies about Starmer rather than focusing on Johnson's (different!) lies about parties, misleading Parliament, Tory party corruption, bullying and the fact he's under investigation by the police. Exactly as Johnson wished.

DuncinToffee · 08/02/2022 17:47

@BoodyDedalus

Sum total of mini reshuffle appears to be:
Jacob Rees-Mogg, minister for Brexit opportunities and government efficiency
Mark Spencer, lord president and leader of the House of Commons
Chris Heaton-Harris, parliamentary secretary to the Treasury = chief whip
Stuart Andrew, housing minister in the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities
Michael Ellis, minister for the Cabinet Office (to help out Steve Barclay), in addition to being paymaster general
Heather Wheeler, parliamentary secretary in the Cabinet Office, in addition to being an assistant government whip</div></div>

James Cleverly has been made Minister for Europe, WHILE on an actual visit to the US as Minister for North America, which he is no longer.

merrymouse · 08/02/2022 17:55

Johnson found the Savile slur in the nasty bits of the internet where conspiracy theorists hang out, endorsed it and fed it back to them with a government approved stamp.

Johnson was not making a general remark about responsibility. He said that Starmer personally “spent most of his time prosecuting journalists and failing to prosecute Jimmy Savile”.

If his own closest advisor can understand what he meant, those who genuinely believe otherwise deserve pity.

ENoeuf · 08/02/2022 18:00

Johnson specifically used ‘he’ not ‘his department’ and I am convinced it was a shorty personal slur not a comment on his department. Hence the ‘hot under the collar’ crappy comment when apologising.

countrygirl99 · 08/02/2022 18:09

Actually Johnson complaining about journalists being prosecuted is a bit rich considering his history.

pussycatunpickingcrossesagain · 08/02/2022 19:25

If the leader of HM Opposition stood up and left the despatch box at PMQs (followed, in dignified silence, by his colleagues from the opposition benches) what would happen?🤔

Johnson would be left bellowing into the void. It would be very funny until the people for whom he can do no wrong accused the opposition of running away scared.
cakeorwine · 08/02/2022 20:03

At PMQs

Prime Minister, with hindsight, would you not have treated Owen Paterson differently?

With hindsight, would you not have misled the house about the parties taking place?

With hindsight, would you not have tried to directly link Starmer with Saville?

Johnson seems to use hindsight a lot. Maybe he is the General of it?

@BoodyDedalus

I wonder if he will like JRM did generously allow opposition days and back bench sponsored bills and motions or not.

Generously? I thought the 20 oppposition days per session are laid down under Standing Orders and are not some sort of generous gift?

  • Standing Order 20 (the number may have changed): Twenty days shall be allotted in each session for proceedings on opposition business, seventeen of which shall be at the disposal of the Leader of the Opposition and three of which shall be at the disposal of the leader of the second largest opposition party;
No I was assured by a poster on another thread, that JRM was working entirely of his own volition to include these things in the parliamentary schedule.

Talking of the bizarre notions that poster had, I see that normal service has resumed and the Prime Minister has removed the Chief Whip whose appointment he was not responsible for and replaced him with someone else.

The raise taxes/spaff money ratio is getting a bit out of hand…

“In October 2020 Good Law Project revealed the existence of the VIP lane. In November 2020 the Government informed the National Audit Office that there were 47 VIPs. In November 2021, after losing an FOI battle with Good Law Project, it published a list of 50 VIPs. However, internal Government documents leaked to Good Law Project now reveal that the true number of companies fast-tracked down the ‘VIP’ lane was far higher […] The full list of additional names can be found here. These 68 VIPs were awarded a total £4.9 billion in PPE contracts. All without competition.”

Ranting mobs tend to shout any insult they can think of.

Funny their first thought was the paedophile one then. What an amazing coincidence.

Their first action was to accuse Starmer of being a traitor for supporting vaccination against Coronavirus. It is obvious that they are anti-vaxxers as two of them are draped in Canadian flags to show their support for the Ottawa truckers. After that someone loudly accuses Starmer for his views on Julian Assange. Only after all of that do I hear a woman shout something about Savile and paedos.

@pussycatunpickingcrossesagain

Given that PMQs are oral (not written) questions, there would be nobody to put questions from the opposition, so the PM would presumably just continue answering questions from his own party.

Frankly, I don't think it would be a very effective strategy.

BoodyDedalus · 09/02/2022 07:52

No I was assured by a poster on another thread, that JRM was working entirely of his own volition to include these things in the parliamentary schedule.

It's better to look things up than rely on what other posters tell you. The standing orders are published online: www.parliament.uk/business/publications/commons/standing-orders-public11/

The orders for opposition days are currently under Standing Order 14 (the numbering changes from one edition to the next).
