Technology Minister with responsibility for disinformation having to discuss how Johnson's comments could have been misinterpreted so glad he clarified them.

Either Johnson knew what he was doing and knew that he would link Starmer to Saville - in which case that is scurrilious

Or he had no idea of the consequences and is therefore incapable of critical thinking and the consequences of his words

Which is it?

It must be this, surely? Didn't people say he was advised not to go down that route but did anyway? So it was very deliberate.

cakeorwine · 08/02/2022 08:05

That's basically the question I would be asking at PMQs if I was an MP.

Or I would be asking any Government Minister who came on to defend him

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2022 08:10

Mirza specifically cited Johnson ignoring her advice not to use the Savile smear as the reason she left.
It wasn't a throw away comment made under pressure or done in haste. It was planned (apparently egged on by Rees-Mogg).
Johnson absolutely knew what he was doing and did it anyway.

longwayoff · 08/02/2022 08:10

What's next in Bozo's diversionary playbook? Now that he's raised a howling mob by citing untrue right wing slurs against the leader of the Opposition, surely it's time to start insulting war heroes? And poking fun at the disabled. That went down well with Trump lovers. It won't be long before it happens.

Exactly. He is either a nasty piece of shit or as thick as shit. Either way, he is unfit to be PM.
merrymouse · 08/02/2022 08:17

Conservative MPs need to look at what happened on Jan 6th in the US and remember that the PM is chosen by them.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 08/02/2022 08:32

“Too busy”? He was playing football at Chatham FC yesterday afternoon
It isn’t enough for tory MPs to tweet about how shocked they are - they are enabling him. Either do something or stop the virtue signalling (to use a phrase beloved of tories).

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 08/02/2022 08:34

Telegraph reporting that around 10 Johnson supporters have put in letters to the 1922 - which they will strategically withdraw to prevent any vote going ahead

longwayoff · 08/02/2022 08:36

Chris Philp, Minister for Technology, excusing Bozo on GMB, eyes swivelling with the effort of attempting to find a justifiable comparison that KS has said. Where's Sajid? He must have run out of steam, was struggling yesterday. What an effort it must be to have to repeat this pitiful and untrue 'defence' day after day.

Alexandra2001 · 08/02/2022 08:37

@GreenLunchBox

but make no mistake, should he lose the next GE (unlikely) he will cling to power as long as possible..

What

I don't know what thats supposed to mean but if you think Bojo will go quietly you re very much mistaken.

However, the rightwing media will go all out to support the tories and labour haven't a chance, the slurs and lies will continue & No 10 Parties will be a distant memory.

Labour had a good lead in the polls in the 2012/13, look what happened in 2015.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2022 08:38

I read the same thing Crying and wondered how that would work in practice. Do you think they announce the 54 has been reached and will be put to a vote and then withdraw? I can't work out what they'd gain. Unless they want to force an early vote and calculate that Johnson would win a NC vote and keep him safe for another year.

Do we know why she was against it?

It couldn't be because its not true, as that doesn't stop politicians or their advisors using slurs and lies to achieve their aims.

countrygirl99 · 08/02/2022 08:46

Did anyone else notice yesterday at 22:28 teaslight quoted a post and agreed with it. Except it was her own post she quoted. Name change fail?

UnconditionalSurrender · 08/02/2022 08:47

He made a childish accusation

And thus it continues. Its a childish accusation. Its labour supporters wot done it. Jeremy Corbyn. Boris is in danger as well.

Johnson is a lazy, incompetent narcissist who will do anything for power. Same as Trump. The people who are most to blame are the enablers and the excusers who are watching him undermine our democracy and are carrying out this work for him. From the MPs to the posters on here.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2022 08:55

No idea Alexandra. Maybe she was keeping an eye on the moderate MP's and didn't want Johnson to alienate them further by using child abuse to obscure his behaviour.

Maybe she simply realised that arguing that Starmer had to take responsibility for his department whilst simultaneously arguing that Johnson didn't wasn't a coherent argument. But God knows there have been so many inconsistent arguments over the years.

Or maybe she just found him increasingly chaotic and challenging to work for. It will be interesting to see where she goes next.

CryingAtTheDiscotheque · 08/02/2022 08:57

Notonthestairs I imagine they would withdraw their letter immediately upon the vote being announced. I don’t know technically if that is possible but it wouldn’t matter - it would throw the process into disarray, demoralise his opponents, delay matters and discredit the process generally.

A bit like proroguing parliament - who cares if it’s lawful, just do it and deal with the fallout later.

Johnson pollutes everything he goes near.

merrymouse · 08/02/2022 08:58

This is why Mirza resigned:

You are aware of the reason for my decision: I believe it was wrong for you to imply this week that Keir Starmer was personally responsible for allowing Jimmy Savile to escape justice. There was no fair or reasonable basis for that assertion. This was not the normal cut-and-thrust of politics; it was an inappropriate and partisan reference to a horrendous case of child sex abuse.

The reasoning is pretty clear.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2022 09:00

😬 yes that sounds plausible.

Make such a mess that Johnson almost looks like the strong & stable option!

merrymouse · 08/02/2022 09:03

Whether or not you believe Mirza is sincere or cynically jumping ship, she is clear about the strategy behind mentioning Savile.

merrymouse · 08/02/2022 09:06

I can’t find the reference but I’m sure I heard that some May loyalists also put in fake letters when she was facing voted if no confidence.

Notonthestairs · 08/02/2022 09:08

I suppose I've got to the stage that I find it difficult to believe that anyone working closely with Johnson holds any values.

It's not like he doesn't have a form she worked with him for 12 years.

LizzieW1969 · 08/02/2022 09:13

It could be that Mirza has personal reasons for reacting the way she did? Maybe she herself was abused as a child or is close to someone who was? There are a lot of people impacted by CSA, which is why BoJo’s comments provoked such a furious reaction, and they are to be found in all walks of life.

merrymouse · 08/02/2022 09:17

Who knows, but it’s ridiculous to claim he was making a general point about managerial responsibilities when his closest advisor has resigned on the basis that it was a deliberate slur.
longwayoff · 08/02/2022 09:37

It is a deliberate slur. It's a lie. That's why none of these cowardly apparent supporters, nor Bozo himself, will repeat it outside the HOC. None of them wants to pay with their house like Katy Hopkins had to for libelling - publishing demonstrable lies about - Jack Monroe. Another example of "I shan't apologise" pig headedness. Note to fans. Repeating the same lie again and again still doesn't make it true.
