To think this burns more calories than running?

I got a mini trampoline a few weeks ago as I wanted something I could do to move my back while watching tv.
I've had lower back pain on and off for a few years and it's worse when sitting for too long.
I've been running on it for about 20-30 mins a day (not every day) and i've lost 3 lbs this week and 9 since I got it.

I hate gyms and struggle to stay motivated unless i'm exercising outside but running on this feels like i'm burning way more calories, has anyone else had good results using one?

🤔 not sure if a mini trampoline is good for your jonts.

But then, if you have fun and you get results, why not!

T00Ts · 03/02/2022 14:26

I’m a keen exerciser and mainly run, do weights and box. But I went to a trampoline park for a hen do and in an hour burnt 600 calories. My god. I was on my arse tired. So it must be good cardio! And it was a lot more fun than running.

AllOfUsAreDead · 03/02/2022 14:28

If you're losing weight and getting fitter, keep doing it. May or may not burn more calories but doesn't matter really. It's doing more than sitting on your ass doing nothing.

hugr · 03/02/2022 14:28

Are you jumping on the trampoline? Jumping isn't a very good exercise for your back because of the pressure it puts on the spine

Thecurtainsofdestiny · 03/02/2022 14:30

My physio suggested this to me as less stressful on the joints. No idea how many calories it uses.

Thanks for the thread OP, I can't run any more and had forgotten about that advice. Might give it a try!

OneTC · 03/02/2022 14:33

It's basically a way less efficient form of running on the spot, so you're putting way more effort into doing it, so yes it would definitely burn more calories than running. There was/is a similar concept in shoe (less efficient for walking in) at some point but they always struck me as a bad idea

Sunshineandflipflops · 03/02/2022 14:35

If you're exercising purely to burn calories then running isn't the highest burner, although it has many other benefits (for me anyway).

WIth exercise, the most important thing is to find something you enjoy and WANT to keep doing so if this is it for you then carry on!

LondonWolf · 03/02/2022 14:42

Apparently "rebounding" ie mini trampolining is some of the most effective exercise you can do.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rebound_exercise

I'm very tempted to get one after reading that.

Oh I was hoping the opposite was true! t feels like they aren't being stressed unlike when I run.

600? Blimey that's good going! It's much more fun than running which I hate and never stick to as I can't take my dogs with me anymore now they're too old Sad

Did you post about your mini trampoline the other day?

No my ceilings are too low for that so i'm running on it but it's more like a sprint speed so it keeps you balanced.

Could you post a link as to what mini trampoline looks like? I'm wondering how big it is...

LesLavandes · 03/02/2022 14:52

Me too. I think I'd be worried about falling off...😮

Fluffruff · 03/02/2022 14:52

How do you run on a mini trampoline? Do you mean like jog on the spot? Intrigued!

Interesting article thanks! Also says it's less stressful on joints than running Smile

Trampolining is much easier on your joints than running. When running, your feet are hitting a solid surface and the impact on your joints is severe - think of hitting a metal hammer on a brick wall.

A trampoline ‘stretches’, taking out a great deal of the impact - think of hitting a hammer on a thick sponge.

Your results are showing you how well this is working and I bet your joints are feeling much better than after running!

TooManyPJs · 03/02/2022 14:57

Is trampolining good for bone health?

It's this one. Not big at all, I can carry it up the stairs between the wall and bannisters when I put it away with the top of the handle off.

You can jog but it's easier to do it quickly like a sprint.

The impact on joints on landing in a high impact sport is also balanced by time in the air without the weight and the upward lift. They are also good for increasing bone density. In a generally well person without specific injuries/ ailments, high impact exercise is good for bones and joints.

Ultimately the best exercise is the exercise that you do.

For a short workout at home, I'd have more interest in a trampoline/ rebounder than running.
For a long workout, I'd rather run in varied scenery for two hours than jump around.

IMONTHETOILET · 03/02/2022 15:09

I was suggested mini trampolining or cycling as good low impact exercise by my orthopedic consult. However, a gynaecologist then told me that trampolining of any kind is the absolute worst exercise for a woman to do and she has seen a huge surge in prolapse cases due to women using trampolines as regular exercise.

GrumpyTerrier · 03/02/2022 15:35

Mini trampolining is so so good for you. It exercises your whole body through having to balance a bit, and cushions your joints far more than running which is awful for the joints. And it is great for your pelvic floor as even that clenches when you bounce, as long as you dont already have pelvic floor problems such as pelvic floor weakness, prolapse or pelvic pain. I've seen some workouts on youtube where they jump very very high-- I imagine that could be more high impact. But most is just small bounces.

TheRealHousewife · 03/02/2022 15:37

I was thinking of getting a mini trampoline as I’d heard they were good if you had painful joints/muscles. I think I’d need one with a bar/handle attached as my balance is pants. Any recommendations! 🙏
