Why didn't Mumsnet delete my post??

Larafromthe80s · 02/02/2022 21:42

Just curious... I started a thread which detailed a lot of information about a situation I was in, thankfully I'd name changed for it!
Anyway it blew up and got picked up by a regional media outlet
I reported the thread to Mumsnet and continued to do so over the following 72 hours, as well as emailing them directly.
By this point the article was in 3 nationals and around 6 regionals

A family member screen shot the news article from his Facebook newsfeed to me saying as a joke "this isn't you isn't" as he he hadn't actually read the article, only the headline and thought it was just coincidental. And it was me 😖
I was mortified and am living in fear that the people it was about will have seen it.
Why did Mumsnet take so long to delete it, is that normal?

OP posts:
RedCandyApple · 02/02/2022 21:44

They did that to me after it was picked up by a journalist. They left it up for ages I had to message a few times to ask for it to be deleted yet some are deleted instantly!

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 02/02/2022 21:45

Well when he sees this he’ll definitely know it’s you,

IWasHotInTheNineties · 02/02/2022 21:45

This has just made me curious of what the story was

Hellocatshome · 02/02/2022 21:47

I posted something that ended up being outing (not in the papers thank god) I practically had to beg to have it removed and got a lecture about how they wouldn't do it again etc etc but since then I have seen a lot of threads deleted for seemingly no other reason than the OP feels it isn't going there way.

marqueses · 02/02/2022 21:47

Don't you need to ask them to explain?

RedCandyApple · 02/02/2022 21:48

Exactly I’ve seen threads deleted after 20 mins because the op “had second thoughts about posting”
CaroleFuckingBaskin · 02/02/2022 21:49

They probably get paid for a thread....

HikingforScenery · 02/02/2022 21:50

Perhaps the articles drive a lot of traffic to the site?

Coolcoolcool · 02/02/2022 21:51

Ok but we need to know what it was now Grin

Hb12 · 02/02/2022 21:52

I don't know tbh, the one time I asked them to delete something for me it never got deleted...but some seem to get deleted at the drop of a hat!

ABCDEFyou · 02/02/2022 21:52

The only people who would know is Mumsnet, did you ask them why they didn't delete it? Nobody here can tell you.

Newspapers pick up articles from here all the time, it's shit that they do but it's a risk we all take when posting on public forums.

There's parts on MN that is slightly safer to post on if you're seeking support and want to reduce chances of press or some you knows seeing it, I believe it also doesn't show in browser search results (I think) the rest of the site is open to the public to share with friends and other members of public, including lazy journalists.

They seem to do it all the time now. There's also podcasters that discuss threads now too.

itwasntaparty · 02/02/2022 21:53

You're just advertising it again...

suggestionsplease1 · 02/02/2022 21:53

Yep cynically I would wonder if it's in their interests to keep it up as it likely increases their income from advertising as more people visit the site. T&C's will say if they are under any obligation to remove threads, they maybe aren't and it's simply a goodwill thing that they do.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 02/02/2022 21:53

NormanStangerson · 02/02/2022 21:56

You lose your rag and tell an idiotic poster to ‘fuck off’ and it’s gone as soon as you hit post, but when the nationals are all over your thread and it’s driving a shit ton of traffic to their site, and despite you begging MNHQ to take it down as it’s destroying your life and you’ve been identified, it isn’t… interesting.

It’s almost like the MNHQ posts about checking on OP’s welfare ‘behind the scenes’ are bullshit and they don’t actually care about posters at all, just making a ton of money.

marqueses · 02/02/2022 21:56

@CaroleFuckingBaskin

They probably get paid for a thread....
Paid by whom?

Why would anyone pay to post a link to a free website?

mixum · 02/02/2022 21:59

Posters should be able to delete their own posts within a short time frame. Unusual that you cannot here.

caringcarer · 02/02/2022 21:59

If you want something removed instantly just have a little moan about Meghan Markle and it will be taken down in a flash.

Womencanlift · 02/02/2022 21:59

I think it’s been happening long enough that everyone should know the risk that this can happen when making the decision to start a thread

MNHQ don’t need to take your thread down they are doing it as a courtesy

As a pp said there are even podcasts doing similar now. I have listened to one where they focus on Reddit ‘Am I The A-hole’ posts. Mostly American threads and it’s quite entertaining

CrinklyCraggy · 02/02/2022 22:00

They deleted one of mine where I had definitely overshared, without me even asking. I was starting to feel uncomfortable about it, especially when someone linked to another post I'd made about the same situation under a different name, but I never asked for it to be removed

Someone started another thread about how outrageous it was that "OP" had been so wet as to have it removed...

CrinklyCraggy · 02/02/2022 22:01

I can only assume someone else reported it on my behalf

TheHaka · 02/02/2022 22:11

Jeremy Kyle owns MN.

grapewine · 02/02/2022 22:16

Articles drive traffic to the site. When something online is free, you and what you share is the product.

This is why people need to think again about identifying threads.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 02/02/2022 22:20

I think once the nationals have got hold of it, then the genie is already out of the bottle.

It is a risk posting. No question. But lazy journalism is one thing, questionable as it is.

To do so when it could possibly endanger the OP in a desperate situation is positively shameful. One thread I can think of recently was like that.

MNHQ did delete the thread but the story was already out there.

I hope the female journalist never knows the horror of a toxic and hugely abusive relationship.

They were probably just chuffed that they didn’t have to work too hard that afternoon.

Bladesofgreen · 02/02/2022 22:21

It’s money making, that’s why it’s not deleted.
I’m sure they are thrilled when Newspapers pick up them up.

That and I often think a lot of threads are huge figments of imagination by paid writers
