To be glad Norway is banning breeding deformed dogs?

Norway will ban the breeding of King Charles and British bulldogs. I hope that this will catch on in other countries, and force breeders and Kennel Clubs to change their stupid and harmful standards?
Can pugs and French bulldogs be next?

Excellent idea! And yes to pugs and frenchies too

MrsBaublesDylan · 02/02/2022 19:21

I think they are right. Purposefully breeding a dog which will be in pain and probably need surgery is unethical.

Some many previously beautiful breeds have had their lives ruined by greedy breeders who do it 'for fashion'.

Many on MN look down on cross breeds but at least pug crosses can actually breathe if they have some Beagle in them.

LakieLady · 02/02/2022 19:24

I'm delighted. I wish they'd do it here, too.

If breeders were more responsible about not breeding for these exaggerated features, and not breeding from dogs with inherited conditions, this wouldn't be an issue.

pigsDOfly · 02/02/2022 19:26

Haven't heard about this before. Very pleased to see at least one country is beginning to see sense over the breeding of these poor animals.

A step in the right direction, lets hope other countries follow.

Twilight7777 · 02/02/2022 19:27

I’m very pleased! A friend of a friend has 2 ‘teacup’ poodles which I’m sure most people know don’t exist, it is by breeding the runt of the litter with another runt. One of them has had to have brain surgery to make more room in the skull for its brain 🥺 I felt so sorry for the dog when I heard. The dog also has additional brain damage from a traumatic birth too. I have a poodle but I went with a breeder who would only breed the healthiest of their poodles, and was recommended by a another friends vet.

I know very little about dogs and have never owned one, but even I know about the issues with pugs and French bulldogs. Presumably the people whom own these dogs consider themselves dog lovers, so why is there still a market for them?

longwayoff · 02/02/2022 19:34

Well done Norway. My neighbours have just bought a French Bulldog, poor little thing. I wish people wouldn't buy these poor deformed creatures. And the cat breeders too, Persian cats are barely recognisable from their ancestors of 50 years ago. Just awful.

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 02/02/2022 19:37

There are issues with lots of breeds. We had rescue Westies and they were plagued with skin problems known as Westie skin disease. Then I sadly found out that they also get Westie lung disease which causes their lungs to harden and is untreatable.

German shepherds have problems with their hips.

St Bernards are prone to heart problems I believe.

Plus the fashion for very small dogs causes them problems whatever their breed.

MeanderingGently · 02/02/2022 19:37

I saw this news item too....well done Norway, I have great respect for that country. Let's hope it catches on elsewhere.

BoodleBug51 · 02/02/2022 19:39

Our NDN's paid nearly £4k for an english bulldog, and it's so deformed it can barely walk or breathe. It's only 2 yet has had 3 lots of surgery for hip displasia and joint issues. It makes me want to cry to see him waddling down the road from side to side...... although he's at least double the weight he should be which doesn't help Angry

I hope this country will follow.

Porcupineintherough · 02/02/2022 19:41

Good. I find it inexplicable that supposed animal lovers support such cruelty.

Mybestyear · 02/02/2022 19:41

YANBU. I hate dogs bring bred to suit human tastes. A colleague I otherwise respect very much got a bulldog and it’s never out of hospital/vets. It wouldn’t be so bad if it had been rescued but they went to a breeder for a pup. So far it’s has surgery to eyes, nose, mouth and now has some kind of thing between its claws/nails (which apparently they are well known for!!) and likely to need surgery for that. The poor thing is less than 18 months old and has already had 4 operations . My heart bleeds

betwixtlives · 02/02/2022 19:42

yanbu. The dog breeding industry is fucked up

AuntMasha · 02/02/2022 19:45

This. Good for Norway.
jerometheturnipking · 02/02/2022 19:46

Good for them. I can only hope we follow suit. Add pugs and franchies to the list too.

Bitofachinwag · 02/02/2022 19:48

Oh, so those breeds will just die out?

Mo1911 · 02/02/2022 19:48

Great news, I hope other countries follow on.

LittleSnakes · 02/02/2022 19:49

That would be so good. I never understand how people can buy pugs and not feel so ashamed when they walk them.

Watchingpeppa12 · 02/02/2022 19:50

Agreed. Especially pugs and frenchies should be banned, they can barely give birth without needing a c section!! Horrific

Blueuggboots · 02/02/2022 19:50

A person I knew bought two bulldogs with the intention of breeding them. The female had a problem with her urinary tract and then became seriously unwell and had to be put down. Within 3 weeks, they had bought another female.

I met someone a few weeks ago who was a French bulldog inseminator....they can't actually mate without help, and have to have c-sections. Utterly ridiculous!!!

wetotter · 02/02/2022 19:56

A good move by Norway, but I'm amazed that Frenchies weren't on the original list

They can mate, but they have the highest c-section rate of any type of dog (over 80%, IIRC), and they have so many health problems

EerieSilence · 02/02/2022 19:56

I'm glad, those poor dogs can hardly breathe and move.
I feel something similar for some other breeds, for example show line German Shepherds. The working lines are fine but the show lines have a completely deformed back and back legs, it looks like they're dragging their back legs on the ground.

Ylvamoon · 02/02/2022 19:57

Fantastic! Let's hope they set a trend and add more breeds to the list and other countries will follow!
... and then we need to look at all the genetic defects from inbreeding. Fantastic! Let's hope they set a trend and add more breeds to the list and other countries will follow!
... and then we need to look at all the genetic defects from inbreeding, for example Primary Lens Luxation or Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosessuch nasty painful conditions and totally avoidable.

SirSniffsAlot · 02/02/2022 20:01

It's a small but absolutely vital first step to tackling the massive issue of breeding poor health into dogs (breeding-related problems that are also sadly spreading into horses, cats and rabbits).

catwithflowers · 02/02/2022 20:02

Excellent decision
