Do you think this is right ? Mandatory vaccination

toddymummy · 02/02/2022 07:30

From mid February if you're over 50 years old in Italy, you need to be vaccinated / or show proof that you have had covid, in order to go to work.

You'll face sanctions if you don't.

Does anyone think this is OK ? And how do you justify that this is OK ?

So essentially, they could end up in a situation where you can't work to feed your family, unless you're vaccinated against covid.

I'm not anti vax at all and have had all my jabs. But I don't feel comfortable about this...

@Hospedia stop coming on here with your common sense! Don’t you know that social media reliably informed those posters it’s a experimental trial 😂

NotNowAlan · 02/02/2022 10:22

I'm fully vaxed and boosted and my immune response appears to be shot. I've always been healthy and rarely catch colds etc but since having my booster in December I've had one nasty cold that turned into a chest infection, a horrible bout of covid and now have a lousy head cold that will probably mutate to a chest infection. I'm so fed-up with feeling ill all the time.

Obviously I can't prove it's down to the vaccine, but I doubt I'll voluntarily have another one. I'm strongly against mandating medical treatments.

Hospedia · 02/02/2022 10:28

@AlexissFreeenncch I've doomed the next generation too. At his covid vaccine appointment DS announced to the nurse "I'm here to get my autism leveled up".

After I had the vaccine the England team became shit at cricket. Obviously I can't prove that's down to the vaccine but I think it's more likely than 'I got ill again during flu season after a first nasty bug'.

RedRobyn2021 · 02/02/2022 10:29

@toddymummy

I'm not anti vax either but I am pro body autonomy

I think it's a slippery slope and quite scary. I'm sure I read about a month ago that one country was making covid vaccinations mandatory period

AlexissFreeenncch · 02/02/2022 10:29

@NotNowAlan everyone’s immune response is shot. We’ve all been in lockdown for pretty much two years. Both covid and a very nasty cold were rampant at Christmas. I got the nasty cold and still have a bad cough weeks later (and I wasn’t boostered at the time). You unfortunately got both.I also rarely got colds pre covid.

It’s nothing to do with the vaccine.

Hospedia · 02/02/2022 10:29

(Before anyone says anything about an autism joke, DS is autistic or rather he's now - in his own words- "autism 5G edition").

Shocking. The fans will be after you for ruining the cricket teams chances all because you got an experimental vaccine 😂😂

@GeneLovesJezebel

I have mandatory vaccines to do my job, many people in many roles do, so I don’t see the problem.
Yes but presumably you knew that before you took on that job. I don't have a problem with requiring vaccinations for healthcare roles - if you don't want them, you don't take that role. But not if you are already in the job.

Simply requiring people to have a vaccination to exist is wrong. It is also ageist - I would hazard a guess that I am healthier at nearly 50 than a lot of 40 year olds - in fact I am fitter than I was myself at 30.

I've said this on here before - vaccination makes sense at population level but it should never be mandatory because people can and do have serious side effects and it's no consolation to them that most other people were vaccinated without issue. I am also not in favour of mandatory vaccination to access school.

Hospedia · 02/02/2022 10:31

Obviously I can't prove it's down to the vaccine

Because its not.

You've spent nigh on two years coming into minimal contact with germs, bugs, and other nasties. Think of your immune system as being a bit like a muscle, you give it regular challenges and it'll work to your own personal optimal level, don't work it out and it gets weaker then when you do work it out again it takes time for it to strengthen back up.

Suzi888 · 02/02/2022 10:34

There are no mandatory vaccinations for childhood illnesses Hmm

No one should be forced to have a vaccine. It’s weird to be honest. This obsession with a vaccine that lasts a few months before you need it again and again and again. (Yes I’ve had my jabs). I just don’t see the point in them. How much is this bloody costing.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 02/02/2022 10:36

I'm not sure that significantly reduce is the case with Omicron. Vaccinations made a whole lot of sense pre Omicron, but now the virus has mutated and its nowhere near as clear cut. The virus isn't as deadly and the vaccine is nowhere near as effective at stopping people getting it. To mandate that people have to he vaccinated seems entirely wrong anyway, but even more so when the science no longer backs it up.

User0458832 · 02/02/2022 10:38

No I don't agree with it but it is what is happening a lot in Europe and some other countries so just glad I don't live there. Fortunately I don't have to set foot in any of these places

madisonbridges · 02/02/2022 10:40

@HacerSonarSusPasos

Yes. He have had mandatory vaccinations for many other diseases for decades now. How is covid any different?
Oh, that's interesting. What do you have mandatory vaccines for? Is that common in other European countries too, do you know?
OperationRinka · 02/02/2022 10:44

Vaccinations still make a whole lot of sense. They're extraordinarily effective in preventing people from becoming hospitalised and dying. They protect the recipients, especially the most vulnerable people (except a small minority with specifically compromised immune systems) and they prevent health systems from becoming overrun. They are still absolutely vital and should be facilitated and encouraged very strongly.

What they don't do particular well is prevent you from infecting other people, which is why I personally don't think mandatory vaccination is justified in the UK.

HacerSonarSusPasos · 02/02/2022 10:47

@madisonbridges there's a national vaccination schedule for a host of childhood illnesses but not only (ex polio, hep B, dyfteria...) and you need proof of vaccination to enroll in school. This is eastern europe, but i assume it's the same in many western countries too.

FelicisNox · 02/02/2022 10:48

I happily had all 3 boosters (work for NHS) but I also don't think this is right.

Whilst I am absolutely pro vaxx, I am also pro choice and enforced anything feels like a violation of human rights to me.

Viruses either evolve or devolve and this one is devolving.

In saying that... we have a hospital full of Covid patients and as a vulnerable patient I wouldn't want unvaccinated staff treating me.

Yes it's a double standard... it's a toughie.

SW1amp · 02/02/2022 10:52

Australia have had ‘mandatory’ vaccines for children for a long time

If you’re children aren’t up to date with their jabs, you don’t get child benefit, they aren’t allowed into nursery etc

It’s been hugely effective at reducing and eliminating childhood diseases

heldinadream · 02/02/2022 10:53

@Hospedia your DS sounds like a wonderful bright boy. He made me laugh! I think he will go far... Smile

cavalierkingc · 02/02/2022 10:56

So wrong. I don't think any vaccine should be compulsory. I don't think your job should be able to demand to know either.
And I am vaccinated.

DetectiveFlorence · 02/02/2022 11:02

Any ' Anit vVax' replies always seem to have a hint of 'conspiracy theory' behind it.

Normal people start talking about ' Government Control' etc, seeing conspiracy theories and a dark side to it that just isn't there. This is simply about keeping the world turning.

The last couple of years have surprised me, I never knew there were so many people out there not willing to protect themselves, protect others and protect the NHS .

With regards to having a vaccination to work - seriously, where's the harm? some jobs have physicals, they have Occupational Health teams that deem if you are suitable for a job etc.

Finally, all these anti vax conspiracy / government control people don't mind giving google and facebook all kinds of information, and don't refuse drugs they nothing about when they are actually ill.

I honestly think resistance to be vaccinated has originated from social media gossip which has spread to workplaces and pubs. It's complete nonsense

VelvetChairGirl · 02/02/2022 11:08

@Crumbwell

You can’t send your children to school in Italy if they’re not vaccinated, so compulsory vaccines isn’t something new there.
but is sending them to school mandatory?
VelvetChairGirl · 02/02/2022 11:13
@VelvetChairGirl we don’t know that. One of the new strains could be 100 x more deadly.
then your vaccine will be useless, thats how it goes with viruses they mutate.

but its unlikely, they tend to move towards being less deadly as that aids their own existence and spread thats why we have never had a major outbreak of ebola its too deadly for it's own good, doesn't spread very far.

110APiccadilly · 02/02/2022 11:15

Interestingly, and this may be nothing to do with covid vaccines, childhood vaccination rates have fallen in the UK in the last year - sorry, I don't have a link to hand, but it was an article in the Guardian. Making vaccines mandatory, or even the heavy-handed encouragement of them that UK governments have been doing, can really easily backfire, adding fuel to conspiracy theories. I believe this happened in Australia when they linked child benefit payments to having your children vaccinated.

CailleachGranda · 02/02/2022 11:19

I dont think people should lose their jobs

But if they have to isolate for 10 days as a contact, because they're not fully vaccinated, then they should not be paid.
