David Beckham reveals wife Victoria has eaten the same meal every day for 25 years

Apparently Victoria Beckham will only ever eat grilled fish and steamed veg. Every day for 25 years. She says she won’t eat food cooked in oil, butter or sauces, red meat, or dairy.

AIBU to think life is too short to live without butter!

The main thing it seemed to me is that most families didn't use cars, even if they had them! We walked miles. I used to walk 10 miles as a teenager to see one particular friend.

I don't think it's fair to conclude that @HeadNorth said everything was hunky dory.

It wasn’t necessary to conclude anything. They said it.

But she's also correct in that up to the 1970's obesity was rare

Amphetamines were commonly prescribed for weight loss in the 70’s, and were very effective. Smoking before that.

Obesity is rising due to many factors. Fast food, ready access, labour saving gadgets, more sedentary lifestyles. But we also can’t pop to the GP for fenfen and solve our weight issues that way, which is how they did in the 70’s.

I said that VB was slender in our society but many years ago we would all have been a lot thinner and the human race did not die out. Indeed, these days some infertility may be linked to obesity.

My point is, I think she is a healthy weight (she has carried 4 healthy children), just at a leaner end than is usual today, but would not have been an outlier a few hundred years ago.

I don't like critising women for their appearance, we come in all shapes and sizes and a healthy weight is pretty broad, from fairly angular to quite well covered. And neither is better than the other.

Marmelace · 02/02/2022 15:34

Sounds like my perfect meal.

Benjispruce5 · 02/02/2022 16:23

I like filled fish and steamed veg too but not every meal?

speakout · 02/02/2022 16:29

So much variety with fish and veg- I would love to eat that at every meal

PoshWatchShitShoes · 02/02/2022 16:34

That's really sad. She doesn't have an enviable figure at all, so I'm not sure why she deprives herself so much.

Having said that, I once ate the same Pret sandwich every work day for over a year. Just because I loved it 😂

TellySavalashairbrush · 02/02/2022 16:43

As someone who has lived with an eating disorder for most of their adult life on and off, I can see it from all sides. She has an obvious eating disorder and must have been livid that he discussed what she eats with anyone outside of their circle (I would) and I can guarantee her life is bloody miserable as a result of living with this diet, but she's become used to it sadly, probably to the point of being terrified of eating anything outside of her normal routine.

He will be equally unhappy (my dh really struggles with me and my pattern of eating) it destroys socialising and takes over in nearly every area of your life. I feel for both of them.

BellatrixOnABadDay · 02/02/2022 16:43

Fish and veg every day would be lovely but I'd want something different at other meals. I can't imagine her portion sizes are what they should be which is the issue, not the fact that it is the same food every day.

GiantKitten · 02/02/2022 16:46

GiantSpider
I think it's unkind of him to tell everyone.

I agree!
Unless she is happy for him to do so (we will never know)

She was present and said the same thing 🤷🏼‍♀️

Maybe if the media didn't constantly shit all over women and how much they weigh, as if that had literally anything to do with their value as a human being, then she wouldn't feel the need to restrict herself like this.

But Victoria Beckham is an enthusiastic part of that whole media culture. She's long ago been rich enough to retire entirely from public life, but she actively courts publicity for 'brand Beckham', these days mostly through her children.

Also, she has set up her own fashion line which famously only caters for women as thin as her. So to me she is hardly some innocent victim of fashion and its very narrow idea of what women should look like. She's very much a part of it.

Alonelonelylonersbadidea · 02/02/2022 17:28

I'd eat the same thing every day and hat makes me happy. I eat to live. That's all. Sadly my DP loves to eat and despairs when I forget about eating or literally don't give a damn about it. It's me.
People should just leave VB alone

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 02/02/2022 17:32

We're all part of the patriarchy whether we like it or not. Honestly you should listen to the podcast linked above, she doesn't really sound like someone struggling with food. I found it pretty interesting.

So basically women have no agency?

When Victoria Beckham, a woman who could have done anything with her life, chose to set up a fashion house catering only to very thin women, 'the patriarchy' is to blame?

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 02/02/2022 18:22

Now, did I say women have no agency? I did not.

But do you think she could have built a successful career by being Fat Spice? She'd have been an object of ridicule in the press every day until she disappeared. And the Spice Girls wouldn't have made it either to the same degree. Shes had to play the game just like everyone does.

There's surely a middle ground between being 'fat', which she never was, and being as extremely thin as she has been for years. I'm not saying there isn't pressure on women to be thin, but she seems to have created a whole image out of her extreme thinness.

And you're still ignoring my point that, out of all the things she could have done with her life and money, she chose to set up a fashion line catering to very thin women, thereby very much making herself an active part of the industry you seem to think she is a victim of.

nettie434 · 02/02/2022 18:31

@Ssamjang

It seems to me that all he's done here is shared something she's already been very candid about - she isn't that bothered about food as a source of joy, she is incredibly disciplined in all areas of her life, and she knows what she likes. She's never claimed to be naturally very slim regardless of diet, has she? Her children all seem to be very healthy weights. Not sure he said anything surprising or revealing at all.
Exactly! Why are we still seeing posts criticising David Beckham for talking about what Victoria eats? She is incredibly frank about what she eats and there was nothing new in what David Beckham said.

Good for her. It's no ones business but hers.

I'm really not interested in a fight about the eating habits of someone I don't know Grin

Like I say, I just found the podcast quite interesting, and she obviously didn't grow up in a foodie culture, so her indifference/lack of adventurous appetite likely stems from there and then was compounded by the career path she chose.

I'm not sure how responding to comments you chose to make is a 'fight'.

My point is that she actively chose to support and perpetuate the very system of which you seem to consider her to be a victim. That's not on 'the patriarchy'. That's on her.

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 02/02/2022 19:26

So you think VB is literally the only person in the country to exist outside the patriarchy. Ok then.

IKeptYouLikeAnOath · 02/02/2022 19:26

Dammit I argued back Grin
