AIBU to not empty pockets when doing the washing?

Family of 5.
Washing machine running most days. I try to get a wash on last thing at night usually when getting ready for bed or after putting DC's to bed or when the kettle boiling first thing, ideally to have a load out drying whilst I am working.
I don't check pockets.
Do you check pockets? My two littlest DC's dont tend to have things in their pockets, if they do it's school fleeces or coats which I do check. Jeans and trousers I don't check.
I think if you want me to wash your clothes then empty your pockets.
My DH helps with washing here and there and this drives him mad. If he empties a wash out to dry and there is something in a pocket I am held responsible.
Who is unreasonable here? Me for not emptying pockets or him for thinking I should?

The owners of the clothes should empty their own pockets. This drives me nuts as well, particularly when tissues are left in pockets which then ruins the entire wash. Luckily my husband has learnt his lesson on that one after my head exploded one too many times.

SleepingStandingUp · 01/02/2022 12:42

The owners of the clothes presuming they're old enough to know to do it.

However, if it's a tissue or a pen etc does washing it wreck just their clothes or a mixed load? Will you then have to replace clothes?

If you're doing loads of just singular adults it's different to doing mixed loads and yes, I check pockets

Odoreida · 01/02/2022 12:42

I've had a lot of tangerine peel in my washing over the years. I think it is up to my son to check his own pockets (he is 11), my husband much more likely to check every single pocket religiously.

minionsrule · 01/02/2022 12:43

Generally the only pockets i check are my own jeans pockets as I tend to leave shopping lists in them.
I have found the odd train ticket in dh's shirt pockets but that was more luck than checking.
For me its a best endeavours, wearer tries to remember to check when taking off, washer tries to remember when putting in the machine.
No one dies if its missed but I do hate fluff on dark clothes when a tissue is missed Angry.
Basically I wouldn't sweat it as its easily missed

I always used to check pockets when doing my dads washing cos he'd leave loads of money in his pockets so it was a nice way to add to my purse. Now I live with DH and he is responsible for checking his own pockets before anything makes it's way into the machine.

sweepthenmop · 01/02/2022 12:49

I check pockets after a pound coin ripped through the drum of my washing machine, caused an almighty mess and cost many more pounds to replace.

BaronessBomburst · 01/02/2022 12:49

I don't check pockets if the washing was collected from the basket. Everyone is responsible for preparing the clothes ready for washing before putting them in; so no balled-up socks, cardigans buttoned up, jeans inside out etc.
If I've grabbed something off a chair then I'm responsible for preparing it for washing and therefore checking the pockets.

minionsrule · 01/02/2022 12:49

I should add that if its something of value, eg watch or a wad of notes then ultimately its tge wearers responsibility

DimplesToadfoot · 01/02/2022 13:20

An ex of mine thought he was doing me a favour by washing his own work clothes, he didn't empty the pockets and so destroyed the machine with a handful of screws. As it was a week before my birthday he gave me a washing machine as a gift I then 'gave' him a fridge

I do think the clothes wearer should empty their own pockets but I always check, I'd hate to have to buy a new machine simply because I didn't check pockets.

ElephantOfRisk · 01/02/2022 13:44

In theory all should check their own pockets but in practice I'd still check as I'd rather issue a reminder than deal with tissue covered clothes.

People forget etc. And how do your small children not fill their pockets with stones and toys and bits of food?

heyitsthistle · 01/02/2022 13:50

Absolutely the owner of the clothes' responsibility to check pockets. My DH had a pair of reeeeeeeally old and wrecked shorts which we'd discussed replacing a million times before. Eventually I asked him if I should throw them away. He said yes, so I did. It turns out he hadn't emptied his pockets and lost a few small personal items.

Bigpinkslippers · 01/02/2022 13:55

I've trained DH and DS's to empty their own pockets. Top tip any money left in pockets is mine. Made a tidy profit before the realised.

Phillipa12 · 01/02/2022 13:57

I never check pockets, I get he odd cheddar wrapper from the little two boys. My favourite was £20 (they wash and dry really well) from my teenager, he was cross that I kept it, harsh lesson learnt but he empties his pockets now!

Ladiva1971 · 01/02/2022 14:20

I do as my husband is too bone idle and I love when I come across the odd tenner or Fiver or a pocket load of pound coins!! Smile

JassyRadlett · 01/02/2022 14:22

With two young people who are connoisseurs of Interesting Stones which are inevitably left in their pockets, I always check pockets, because I’m fond of my washing machine.

They should do it. But equally I think you either do all pockets or none.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/02/2022 14:23

People should definitely be emptying their own pockets before putting clothes in the wash

SomethingSuss · 01/02/2022 14:26

Those removing the clothes are responsible for removing items from pockets. When you put something into a laundry basket, that's it ready to be washed.

I don't even unroll socks. If you want still dirty socks that haven't washed correctly, feel free to leave them rolled when you put them in the wash basket.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 01/02/2022 14:27

I do, but I also have a rule that if you've not checked your pockets and I find something in there then it belongs to me (barring anything sentimental). So if you leave a £20 note in your pockets and then just shove them in the basket that £20 is now mine! Took a few months before people started behaving but it's rare I find stuff in pockets now! Grin

TooBigForMyBoots · 01/02/2022 14:29

I check, but that's because I'm the only adult and I dont want tissues or anything that can break my machine in there.

IsThisNameTaken · 01/02/2022 14:36

I don't check - have washed DH's phone and wallet, DD's airpods and DS's bus pass (multiple times). They're all old enough to check pockets before putting things in the wash - or they can do the washing themselves if they like.
Similarly, if you put it in the washing inside out, you'll get it back inside out!

Talipesmum · 01/02/2022 14:37

I’d check all kids pockets and tell them off if I found anything. I do check DH pockets in a cursory way, but it’s def his fault not mine if something slips through if he put it in the laundry basket.

GiantHaystacks2021 · 01/02/2022 14:40

I always check all pockets.
Forgetting a disposable tissue in a pocket and then putting it through the wash is death itself.

You can wreck your washing machine if any loose items get caught in the mechanisms.

JudgeJ · 01/02/2022 14:45

I used to love finding the laundered odd five or ten pound note that my late OH used to keep in the breast pocket of his shirt! It cost him a fortune to replace his car keys though, they don't like being washed.

megletthesecond · 01/02/2022 14:51

Yes. I always check.

I'm a lone parent and if the machine breaks it's my time and money. My teens won't be sorting it.

ElephantOfRisk · 01/02/2022 14:57

When I do it, to be fair it's mostly me. DH and DS mainly do their own laundry anyway but I check when I've snaffled stuff up to make up a load.

At the end of the day I'd rather have to remind/nag than deal with the consequences.

When DC were young then it was usually stones, bits of wood, random plastic, cars/lego, crayons or pens.
