AIBU to not empty pockets when doing the washing?

Family of 5.
Washing machine running most days. I try to get a wash on last thing at night usually when getting ready for bed or after putting DC's to bed or when the kettle boiling first thing, ideally to have a load out drying whilst I am working.
I don't check pockets.
Do you check pockets? My two littlest DC's dont tend to have things in their pockets, if they do it's school fleeces or coats which I do check. Jeans and trousers I don't check.
I think if you want me to wash your clothes then empty your pockets.
My DH helps with washing here and there and this drives him mad. If he empties a wash out to dry and there is something in a pocket I am held responsible.
Who is unreasonable here? Me for not emptying pockets or him for thinking I should?

I’ve said this before but:

In my house there is a double system

  1. everyone must check pockets before putting stuff in washing basket

  2. person loading washer must also double check pockets before washing

Saves accidents

Just keep swimming
Just scan for the the items with pockets - most items don’t have them anyway - towels, socks, pants, T-shirts etc

If it bothers your dh so much, tell him he can be in charge of all the laundry from now on.

Jesus - what accidents? It won’t trigger a nuclear power plant meltdown! We have to odd tissue that creates havoc now and then but life is too short for this laundry OCD.

Metal objects are the most likely to cause damage. Coins, keys, screws, nails - if they work their way between the drum and the tank (quite common) they can tear the inner drum, especially on a hot fast spin cycle.

Quite an expensive accident. Best avoided.

JassyRadlett · 02/02/2022 13:59

(I had a small stone from a pocket get stuck once. Didn’t tear the drum thank goodness though I’ve seen it happen to others. But fuck me I’ve never heard a noise like it.)

And "accidents" are not limited to the washing machine getting damaged - what about the actual item accidentally going in there that gets damaged? Many things don't like being submerged in detergenty water for an hour!

It's not at all OCD - it's common sense.

Is your DH the one leaving things in his pockets and then getting upset at you?

I'd leave his clothes in the basket for him to wash if that was the case.

This is just sensible. Obviously everyone should ideally empty their own pockets but people forget (including me). I do the laundry so double-checking pockets before putting clothes in is only wise to save me the annoyance of tissues everywhere (or worse).
