AIBU to not empty pockets when doing the washing?

Family of 5.
Washing machine running most days. I try to get a wash on last thing at night usually when getting ready for bed or after putting DC's to bed or when the kettle boiling first thing, ideally to have a load out drying whilst I am working.
I don't check pockets.
Do you check pockets? My two littlest DC's dont tend to have things in their pockets, if they do it's school fleeces or coats which I do check. Jeans and trousers I don't check.
I think if you want me to wash your clothes then empty your pockets.
My DH helps with washing here and there and this drives him mad. If he empties a wash out to dry and there is something in a pocket I am held responsible.
Who is unreasonable here? Me for not emptying pockets or him for thinking I should?

I check pockets, snaffle any cash. If there's tissues, random spanners etc I will tell the owner of the garment Im not washing it as it is, so they can either empty the pockets and I'll bung it in the machine or they can .

RoseLavenderBlue · 01/02/2022 17:09

I do tend to check them now, since DH’s work shorts went through the wash (and tumble dryer) with his car keyless entry fob in them! Of course I blamed him for leaving them in there (they were in one of the pockets lower down the leg in cargo shorts) but he also had the cheek to blame me for not checking. I said it was his responsibility for this. Was made worse when the windows of his car started going up and down on their own. Eventually it dried out and with a new battery, worked ok.

I find headphones wash particularly well Grin

Sprucewillis · 01/02/2022 17:18

They come out the drier quite well too. A bit knotty but 🤷🏻‍♀️

CleoUK · 01/02/2022 17:40

One pound coin has ruined our washing machine (and Boxing Day two years ago)...
Since then we empty the pockets AND check when putting the clothes in.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/02/2022 18:18

I also have a rule that if you've not checked your pockets and I find something in there then it belongs to me

^^
I love this!

Sadly it mainly seems to be sanitary towels in dd’s blazer pockets thst get washed!

I have washed my own car key before but luckily my car is so basic the key isn’t electric and no harm done!

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 01/02/2022 19:03

I think pockets should be emptied by the owner before they go into the wash basket so that there's no fuss and delays getting it in. My DP thinks it's easier to check as they go into the washer. The problem is that I seem to do the majority of the washing.
He's lost a few important work things to the washer and lately seems to be cards our DD gives him to hold which irritates me as he puts them in his back pocket and forgets.
We've also had drill bits, screws, coins and even a few small tools found in the washer. I was fuming.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 01/02/2022 19:07

DD left a tin of vaseline in a hoody pocket, it went through the washing machine and then tumble dryer, promptly melting, leaking from the tin and ruining an entire load of clothes. It was just after Christmas and alot of them were brand new too 😔

toomuchlaundry · 01/02/2022 19:13

@IsThisNameTaken I always wash things inside out, thought you were meant to, so I get annoyed if they aren’t inside out when put in the laundry basket!

Blossom64265 · 01/02/2022 19:17

I don’t check pockets. I don’t sort. Everyone is responsible for putting their laundry into the proper sorted hamper in ready to wash condition.

The only pockets I would check would be for people too young to put their own laundry in the hamper unsupervised.

StoneofDestiny · 01/02/2022 19:20

I do as I don't want to bung up my washing machine! (But if I find £££ it's mine 😂)

onemouseplace · 01/02/2022 19:22

Everyone is supposed to empty their pockets before putting things in the wash, but as it me who has to pick the bits of tissue off damp clothes if one goes through the wash, I do a cursory check before putting a wash on.

Duchess379 · 01/02/2022 23:49

I do the washing & check the pockets, but only because I normally have tissues stuffed in pockets which subsequently wreck the wash & everything looks like its coated in dandruff! So for my own sanity, I check.

1Week · 01/02/2022 23:51

YABU. you might find money

PinkButtercups · 01/02/2022 23:51

Nope!

Only for my 2 year old if needed. Not for my DP. You're a whole ass grown adult. I'm not checking your pockets.

SeeminglyOblivious · 01/02/2022 23:52

Everyone should empty their own pockets for the ease of the person who does the washing. However I think final responsibility rests with the washer who should be checking all pockets before putting a load on.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 01/02/2022 23:53

I always check. Don’t often find anything but my washing machine is too valuable to be randomly damaged, never mind the thing that does the damage. DH is the usual culprit if there is anything, the minions have been trained from birth 😁

DramaAlpaca · 01/02/2022 23:54

I have everyone in my house fully trained to empty pockets before they put their clothes in the laundry basket. I occasionally forget to empty my own though Blush

VivX · 01/02/2022 23:56

I don’t check pockets and consequently dh's wallet and keys have been washed multiple times. I also don’t worry too much if a tissue goes through. But hair pins and bobbles get stuck in the filter and stops the machine from draining which is a pain.

milkyaqua · 02/02/2022 00:12

YABU. This is so bloody-minded. Why ruin a load of washing (or worse, damage the machine) over some petty principle.

Quirkyme · 02/02/2022 01:07

Agree.

This thread is so useless. Who gives a fuck if you decide not to check pockets before a load of washing OP.

Do it, suffer if anything is left in, or check them before and maybe save something.

Make your own bloody decision

Wingedharpy · 02/02/2022 01:24

How to remove washed tissue debris from a pocket? Soak the pocket/garment in a solution of Bicarbonate of Soda and warm water and watch it magically dissappear.Halo

GiantHaystacks2021 · 02/02/2022 03:29

@Bigpinkslippers

I've trained DH and DS's to empty their own pockets. Top tip any money left in pockets is mine. Made a tidy profit before the realised.
Shock

Stealing from your own family is pretty horrible.
You're a thief.

EBearhug · 02/02/2022 08:53

Pocket owners should check, but I hate it when a tissue goes through, and I don't want the machine to break, so I check anyway. I agree that and money found becomes yours. It should make people better at checking their own pockets. It's not stealing if they know this is the deal.

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 02/02/2022 09:41

I’m amazed at how much time you all spend preparing the wash. I’m constantly exhausted and busy: whatever is in the washing basket gets scooped and put in the washing machine. I don’t even touch most individual items, let alone go through each pocket.

If I had to do that I would never actually get a wash on!
