AIBU to not empty pockets when doing the washing?

Family of 5.
Washing machine running most days. I try to get a wash on last thing at night usually when getting ready for bed or after putting DC's to bed or when the kettle boiling first thing, ideally to have a load out drying whilst I am working.
I don't check pockets.
Do you check pockets? My two littlest DC's dont tend to have things in their pockets, if they do it's school fleeces or coats which I do check. Jeans and trousers I don't check.
I think if you want me to wash your clothes then empty your pockets.
My DH helps with washing here and there and this drives him mad. If he empties a wash out to dry and there is something in a pocket I am held responsible.
Who is unreasonable here? Me for not emptying pockets or him for thinking I should?

@SomethingSuss

Those removing the clothes are responsible for removing items from pockets. When you put something into a laundry basket, that's it ready to be washed.

I don't even unroll socks. If you want still dirty socks that haven't washed correctly, feel free to leave them rolled when you put them in the wash basket.

Same here.

My DH helps with washing here and there and this drives him mad. If he empties a wash out to dry and there is something in a pocket I am held responsible

Does he go through all the pockets when he puts a wash on? Or does his 'helping with washing' only extend to occasional washer emptying?

He sounds like the kind of man who expects things to be done 'just so', but rarely puts the effort in himself to meet that standard.

I empty my own and my toddler’s but DH and older DC are in charge of theirs. I have washed money in the past but there you go, not my responsibility to empty DH’s pockets.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 01/02/2022 15:12

Yeah, I check because I can't afford to replace the machine if it breaks!

ErrolTheDragon · 01/02/2022 15:13

I do think the clothes wearer should empty their own pockets but I always check, I'd hate to have to buy a new machine simply because I didn't check pockets.

This. People should definitely check their own pockets, because expecting other people to handle things like used tissues is grim, and if there are items with any value (monetary or usefulness-wise) then they should be responsible for making sure they're put somewhere sensible.

But the downside of what can happen to the wash/machine if something is left in the pocket means it's just not worth taking the risk of not checking.

SantaClawsServiette · 01/02/2022 15:14

The clothes owners should do it.

However, stuff in pockets can totally destroy your washer, which is an expensive proposition. The spin cycle can drive something like a coin right through the drum. So you should really check them anyway.

irishfarmer · 01/02/2022 15:24

Up to them to check their pockets. I do tend to hold trousers upside down and give them a shake just to make sure there are no screws/ similar in DHs pockets which would break the machine!

He also leaves his socks balled up, they go back to him balled up! They are filthy and I am not pulling them out.

RagzRebooted · 01/02/2022 15:26

I refuse to be responsible for the pocketly contents of others.
Several things have been ruined by going through the wash. Entirely the owner's fault.
I'm the only one who tends to leave tissues in pockets and so I have myself to blame when I make my uniform covered in tissue!

Chely · 01/02/2022 15:27

Always check the pockets. Blasted paper going through the wash is a nightmare, any loose change in them becomes mine!! Wash baskets are mine so they must want me to have it 🤣

Always check...just got a new machine and I don't want to damage it

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2022 15:35

Why would you not give the money back to your dad

Well if you're doing another grown adult's washing and they can't be arsed to check the pockets then that's just a tip for doing the job then isn't it?

If only there was a simple way to avoid losing money while clothes are in the wash that even a man could manage to do.

NowEvenBetter · 01/02/2022 15:35

’DH helps with washing here and there and this drives him mad. If he empties a wash out to dry and there is something in a pocket I am held responsible’

He ‘helps’-so it’s your job??
What does being held responsible entail?

(Two adults in my house, if anyone doesn’t want tissue fluff over their clothes/washed coins, they use their functioning hands to empty their clothes before putting clothes in the machine.)

Socialcarenope · 01/02/2022 15:40

We each check out own pockets before it goes in the washing basket. The kids get reminded when they get undressed.

DH used to get annoyed when I didn't check his before they got washed and he'd say "it's not difficult", I told him if wasn't that difficult then why didn't he do it? He's never mentioned it again. Stones and orange peel are the most common suspects, that's DS?

TheFlis12345 · 01/02/2022 15:41

I always check. I would rather spend seconds doing that than to have to pick bits of tissue off stuff for weeks to come!

bigbluebus · 01/02/2022 15:45

I check pockets (3 adults in the house) because I hate the mess caused by shredded tissue - and I'm the only one who does the washing.

PussGirl · 01/02/2022 15:45

Worst thing I ever washed was a tampon in my jeans pocket - never seen so much fluff.

I checked pockets for DS when he was small. He's big now & does his own checking & washing.

BunnyBerries · 01/02/2022 15:48

It's obvious isn't it?

If you leave clothes in the basket to be washed with things in the pockets, they'll be ruined in the wash, thus common sense dictates you are forfeiting the contents.

The person loading the machine who should check the pockets before turning it on (to stop the machine and clothes getting wrecked) therefore has all rights to claim from the content WinkBrew

Lillyhatesjaz · 01/02/2022 15:48

My family always check their pockets and I always check them again and we still have the occasional tissue in the wash

CounsellorTroi · 01/02/2022 15:48

I do check for tissues up sleeves but the only thing I’m likely to have stuffed into my leans pockets is a cotton face mask so that doesn’t matter,.

Wnkingawalrus · 01/02/2022 15:49

I didn’t mind pre covid, when we used a lot more cash. Would often find £20 notes in OHs jeans which I would pocket (if he couldn’t be arsed to empty his pockets that’s his problem!).

But now we hardly use any cash it’s just a pain in the arse.

OH got marginally better for a time when a set of headphones went through the washing machine.

mugoftea456 · 01/02/2022 15:50

Always check the pockets. I earn about £20 a week from gathering up everyone's change 😂

Potatosaladfiend · 01/02/2022 16:11

Ah, both of you are!
He should try to empty his pockets and you could try to check all pockets too… to help one another. It won’t be long before your kids have pockets full of everything to add to the mix.

Buuut, I would say neither should be cross at the other- if he’s forgotten that’s his fault really.
It’s the classic ‘everyone is fed up of chores’ argument. Have a hug, place a ‘pocket emptying tin’ somewhere near the wash basket and bag him about it- and in future steal all money that comes your way. Grin

Fairyliz · 01/02/2022 16:16

Tbh I think you need a double check. I have perennial rhinitis so I always have tissues stuffed in my pockets or up my sleeves.
I always check for tissues before I put them in the washing bin and then again before they go in the washer.
It’s surprising how often I find a tissue on the second check.

ButtockUp · 01/02/2022 16:30

I always check pockets as I really don't want any washing disasters ... tissues etc... and it means that if I find any coins or a fiver or a tenner then I get to keep it.

mizzo · 01/02/2022 16:39

I do because it's inevitably me who has to kneel in a puddle for what seems like forever, scratching my fingers to the bone emptying out the filter in order to retrieve hair grips, plectrums, pennies etc that are causing the machine not to empty.
