Inspired by another thread. Is accent mocking ever OK ?

This one has always bothered me. Being from mixed European heritage, but not having an accent myself- I have found myself the subject of accent/ gesture mocking many times.

It doesn't happen as much anymore as it used to,say 10-15 years ago, but it does occasionally happen.

Is it ever OK ? People mock all kinds of accents- Irish, Scottish, Welsh, French, Italian, German.

It really bugs me, especially if it's done repeatedly and especially if it's done at work.

AIBU ?

Mind you an English bloke in Spain thought my dad was speaking German. My dad had a broad Ayrshire accent.

@DaggerIsle

I assume neutral is RP? Used to be anyway.

I hate accent mocking. My family has a regional accent but parents moved away a long time ago.
They are v active at their local church. My mother casually mentioned to me that people at church sometime repeat a sentence she's just said back at her and laugh.... I was shocked.
Similarly when my cousin got married some friends made a speech- most of it involved speaking in a very broad (and terrible) accent that mimicked his... it was awful.

But RP is from the south-east of England, location of power and money, hence just a regional accent that became prestigious over time.

My favour thing is people with English accents who live in Scotland and every so often will just come out with a very Scottish word but in their accent. I love when my colleague who has a lovely accent says ‘aye!’ I always laugh. Her husband and son are very Glaswegian.

@BashfulClam So that phrase Scottish people have shouted at them means absolutely nothing? That’s egregious. I just get told to go back to my country but once they shouted I should go back to Sweden! I’m from Eastern Europe.

@BashfulClam I’m moving to Shetland and can’t wait to say Aye instead of Yes 😃

I'm just being nosey now but what was the context of the other thread you mention?

Someone was correctly upset their MIL ripped on their accent (I think)

@AutomaticMoon I hope you live it here. ‘Aye’ will become 2nd nature quickly. ‘Och aye the noo’ literally translates to ‘oh yes the now’ 🤷🏻‍♀️

@BashfulClam Thank you so much, it looks beautiful in videos! Ah so it’s just complete nonsense but people seem to feel the need to show how Scottish they can sound by saying a few random random unconnected words. How odd! I’m fascinated by the Shetland dialect (never actually been there but got a property cause it was super cheap, it’s an old longhouse church building more than 300 years old) and there’s a lovely lady called Christine who writes poetry in the dialect and she’s on YouTube reciting some, it’s Scottish with Norse words.
