What % of your income is your mortgage?

I realised I have no idea what other people do. For transparency, ours is 10% (household income £5000, mortgage £500. But think we might move house and up the % but then that feels scary. But maybe I’m being a wuss.

Just interested in what others do x

25%

@MoiraNotRuby

Fuck me, are you all liars or have I done my life COMPLETELY wrong?!?!?!

Mines 40%.

Ours has come down as a percentage over the years as the in and out have changed. We’ve also chosen to stay in one house and not move ‘up’.
OhWhyNot · 31/01/2022 21:42

Single. It’s a struggle not sure it’s worth it

That is unusually high so it's bound to look like an outlier on a thread like this - most lenders would consider that unmanageable. Also, why would anyone bother coming on to a thread to anonymously lie about something as boring as this?
CandyMan89 · 31/01/2022 21:44

About 18%. We over pay by £300 though. Not included in the %

Largethighsbadeyes · 31/01/2022 21:44

We pay half the mortgage each.

My share is 25% of my salary
OH share is 10% of his salary

Upupupintheair · 31/01/2022 21:46

19% of our net income

2DogsOnMySofa · 31/01/2022 21:46

27% if you use just my wage. But take into consideration my dh wages too it's 17%

Oblomov22 · 31/01/2022 21:46

16%

heyitsthistle · 31/01/2022 21:46

It's about 50% of my current take home pay, but I contribute massively to my pension at the moment. If I include DH's pay then it's about 25%.

cyantist · 31/01/2022 21:47

It's 20% now, but was about 35% when we first bought the house

DarleneSnell · 31/01/2022 21:47

19% of joint net income

Happyhappyday · 31/01/2022 21:48

15% pre tax, including property tax, which where we live is substantial.

Flibbertyjibberty · 31/01/2022 21:50

Mine's 40%. Boo hoo!

89redballoons · 31/01/2022 21:50

25% of joint net income.

feliciabirthgiver · 31/01/2022 21:54

36% tbh it feels like a burden now but is gradually going down and I know when I come to retire we can downsize and give our children reasonable deposits on their own homes.

LiveFromNewYork · 31/01/2022 21:55

32% including overpayment, 15% without

nurserypolitics · 31/01/2022 21:57

I'm really surprised how low all these are. Ours is 25% of joint income. But childcare is 35% so....

However, we live in an area where renting anything at all would be about 30%, so feel very lucky to own. I don't know anyone with a mortgage anything like 10%, at least not our age (30-something). I've always heard 1/3 is affordable and I'm happy with that: but then DH has a v secure job and if I lost my job we'd be able to ditch childcare costs so it doesn't feel too risky.

23% with an overpayment

SallyLovesCheese · 31/01/2022 22:04

Around 33%, but we're currently a single-income family.

Whadda · 31/01/2022 22:05

It’s all relative, though.

I have two mortgages (properties aren’t rented out) and they come to 30% of our income. After they’re paid, we still have over £7k a month so it feels comfortable.

If our household income was £1.500/month, paying 30% on a mortgage and having £1,050 a month left would feel very, very different.

dalrympy · 31/01/2022 22:21

35%. Yay

womaninatightspot · 31/01/2022 22:24

A third; my income has gone down a lot since it was approved!
