What % of your income is your mortgage?

I realised I have no idea what other people do. For transparency, ours is 10% (household income £5000, mortgage £500. But think we might move house and up the % but then that feels scary. But maybe I’m being a wuss.

Just interested in what others do x

About 20% of our household income.

Angrymum22 · 31/01/2022 17:41

10% although we could pay it off but it is a 5 yr fixed rate so would have to pay a fee. I retire in 2 yrs so will pay it with part of my lump sum. We never stretched ourselves so no need to downsize when DS leaves home. Although we are thinking of moving into a flat in our local city. Living rurally is not much fun when retired, it will be much easier to lock up and travel in a flat.

OohRahhMaki · 31/01/2022 17:41

18% (but a longggg mortgage term!) :(

dontblamemee · 31/01/2022 17:41

Around 8% of my gross income

Popplebop · 31/01/2022 17:41

Was 25% but we were overpaying. Now 0%. Was about 30% for a couple of years due to children and reduced work days but the same mortgage payments.

maddening · 31/01/2022 17:41

Gross or net income?

Pre tax it is 16%, of net income it is 24%.

FindmeuptheFarawaytree · 31/01/2022 17:41

About 34% of net income, which we are comfortable with. We recently moved to the home we want to be in for as long as possible, previously around 22%.

NoResolutionsHere · 31/01/2022 17:42

About 7% at present, will be just over 15% I think when we move in a year or so, that's £1000 a month on mortgage, that's my vv upper limit, hopefully it'll be less.

FrownedUpon · 31/01/2022 17:42

9%

OohRahhMaki · 31/01/2022 17:43

Oh 18% net that should be**

BopToTheTop · 31/01/2022 17:43

25.5% - single adult household

Mouldyfeet · 31/01/2022 17:43

40% of a single income. I’m always skint.

ByStarlight · 31/01/2022 17:44

25% - but was more like 35% when we first took it out, before promotions, pay rises etc

allthingsnaice · 31/01/2022 17:44

10% (dual income no kids household)

hugr · 31/01/2022 17:45

25% but 10% is overpayment

Ponoka7 · 31/01/2022 17:46

My two DD's is 25%. I know a few people who are paying similar.

GoldenFondue · 31/01/2022 17:47

15% of net income.

MiracleBaby2022 · 31/01/2022 17:47

0%

Mortgage free - luckily!

BeyondMyWits · 31/01/2022 17:47

Zero.. paid off now.

Scariest time was 72%. In the early 1990s when my mortgage rate rose and rose to 14.5%... noodles and tins of beans were eaten for a few months. Was easy to pay off early when rates fell quickly.

RussianSpy101 · 31/01/2022 17:48

We’ve just moved. Ours is 9%. We didn’t borrow the maximum we were allowed and put down a large deposit.

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 31/01/2022 17:49

Yikes, were only 6.3%, but we recently sold DH old flat, that took us up to 14%. We're about to put our house on the market and are looking at properties that would take it to 19%

That bakes ne scared, but we have a healthy deposit and should have it paid off early fingers crossed! We are in a lucky position just now!! Jxx

RussianSpy101 · 31/01/2022 17:49

That’s net.

Patienceandgrace · 31/01/2022 17:49

12.5% of our joint monthly net income.

ihaveonecat · 31/01/2022 17:51

23% of net income on average
Varies depending on bonus so some months it's 29%, some it's 21%

Anniegetyourgun76 · 31/01/2022 17:52

Ours is 17%(£850 on a £5000 income) we do fine and am thinking of upping it a bit when we move x
