What % of your income is your mortgage?

I realised I have no idea what other people do. For transparency, ours is 10% (household income £5000, mortgage £500. But think we might move house and up the % but then that feels scary. But maybe I’m being a wuss.

Just interested in what others do x

15% paid off later this year but we are older

mogkat · 31/01/2022 20:34

31% here and we're in a very small house in need of more space but can't afford it!

FirewomanSam · 31/01/2022 20:37

About 20% of our net household income.

curlydiamond · 31/01/2022 20:38

25% of our joint income.

Teesdale2622 · 31/01/2022 20:42

30% of household income and just over 2 years left on mortgage.

90% equity, I think, if I’ve worked that out correctly.

I think 30% is absolutely the maximum we could afford.

trunktoes · 31/01/2022 20:49

12 percent

GingerGloucester · 31/01/2022 20:54

Just under 20% but we are moving and when we do it will go up to around 30-40%

Dimondsareforever · 31/01/2022 20:55

25%. Wish it was lower!!

saltandpepper234 · 31/01/2022 21:06

OP yours is very little compared to your income, but you know that.

We pay £542 and our net income is about £3000 so just over 16.5%

housemaus · 31/01/2022 21:07

Sale hasn't gone through yet but it will be 25% - we're almost a single-income household right now though as DH is at university and only working v part time. Once DH is working more than 1 day a week, it'll be more like 16%.

I've no idea what the average is or what's good/bad!

A580Hojas · 31/01/2022 21:08

Up to 30% is supposed to be affordable.

Hottubtimemachine · 31/01/2022 21:11

Mine is 30% of my take home pay. Feels fine.

RedToothBrush · 31/01/2022 21:12

@A580Hojas

Up to 30% is supposed to be affordable.
Its not if interest rates suddenly crank up and the cost of living has a sudden spike. And you still have a lot to pay off.
CurrantAffair · 31/01/2022 21:13

Ours is 6% but we got a great deal on the house. The thought of upselling and having a bigger percentage is scary!

whirlycarly · 31/01/2022 21:13

1%. That's a happy realisation. It's now less than my gym subscription

Spectre8 · 31/01/2022 21:15

Oh wow mine is 28% but it doesn't feel like as I still manage to save £1k ontop a month.

Beachbabe1 · 31/01/2022 21:20

In the process of getting our 1st mortgage!! Will be 26%!! Cant wait!!

Lolabray · 31/01/2022 21:23

Mines 16.9 per cent

IggysPop · 31/01/2022 21:24

15% of net income.

We have about 60% equity.

Skinnyankles · 31/01/2022 21:24

We have overplayed the mortgage as a 40% of net joint income. It's been tight but this month completely paid off the mortgage (age late 40s)

TooManyPJs · 31/01/2022 21:25

17%. With overpayment 31%. We have a similar income to you and manage that easily.

ISeeTheLight · 31/01/2022 21:26

About 15%, we are looking at moving to a larger house which will take it to about 23%.

MoiraNotRuby · 31/01/2022 21:36

Fuck me, are you all liars or have I done my life COMPLETELY wrong?!?!?!

Mines 40%.

fluffythedragonslayer · 31/01/2022 21:37

owlinnahat · 31/01/2022 21:37
