@derxa

loved ones I hope this phrase will disappear from every day and journalistic discourse very soon.
It might. Particularly if and when Boris goes (although the campaign is working either way - given Boris's desperation to do anything to keep his job).

But a lack of reporting won't change the fact of 1000s of people being unnecessarily killed and disabled by a lack of common sense and morals policy on SARS-COV-2. Nor will it take away from the fact of it being an ageist, ableist, and racist approach. (And it is a racist approach - given the higher risk from Covid for some minorities).

The removal of mitigations (not restrictions), that enable society and the economy to genuinely live with a still new and evolving disease that kills and disables many, will have long term health and economical implications particularly because of Long Covid.

534 people dead from SARS-COV-2. That's just today's figures.

@derxa. Agree re 'loved ones' - so mawkish and reminds me of Evelyn Waugh's savagely funny novel.

See also, and more controversially 'passed'. What is wrong with saying someone has died, for goodness' sake.

Words · 02/02/2022 19:47

I agree totally by the way, about mitigations, tealight. Just making a point about modern euphemisms.

Tealightsandd · 02/02/2022 19:48

I understand what you mean Words Smile

This is what I mean. My DB, DM and DF have all died and of course that has caused deep sadness but there were periods during my life when I could have cheerfully wrung their necks (figuratively speaking of course)

itsgettingweird · 02/02/2022 20:30

@the80sweregreat

Rory Stewart can't go for it because he isn't an MP. I was pulled up on another thread for mentioning him. I like him.
That's why I said "liked" Because someone also pulled me up when I said I wanted him to get it last time!

Excellent if true. He will however schmooze those who haven't put in letters, and probably stay as PM, but I think he will be damaged none the less.

The perfect scenario for anyone who wants rid of the Tory government at the next general election is a damaging vote of Tory Mps as to whether they have confidence in a Prime Minister whose poll rating is abysmal. Boris wins immunity for a year, like that show with Ant and Dec and the damage continues and drags the whole party down.

Ben Wallace now tops ConservativeHome poll of favourite Tory ministers

You’re right @jgw1 but what a miserable year it would be.

With the Tory tax rises coming in April it is definitely going to be a miserable year ahead.
Notonthestairs · 02/02/2022 22:25

@derxa yes but also columnist for Mail on Sunday, ex columnist for The Telegraph and apparently David Cameron's favourite columnist (not sure that's something to be proud of)

totally agree!

Can't stand 'loved ones' or 'passed'. Passed what? The salt? An exam? A ship in the night? A huge turd?

StoneofDestiny · 02/02/2022 22:47

The Tories were supported by Savile and Savile supported them.
Let's not forget how much Johnson admires Thatcher.

StoneofDestiny don't forget that Thatcher lobbied for and secured his knighthood

Goodness, yes. I was extremely confused the other day when someone told me someone had passed - in that particular context, I genuinely thought they meant "passed by".

Peregrina · 03/02/2022 01:47

At one time we would have said 'passed away'. 'Passed' on it's own is an Americanism.

Words · 03/02/2022 06:16

I know Peregrina. 'passed away/on' only infinitesimally less awful.

I now have a Billy Bragg ear worm... 'they passed very fast like ships in the night or cars in a contra flow system.'

You're welcome. Grin

Anyway sorry for thread de rail!

I shouldn't worry about the derail, it is more relevant and interesting than those that the squirrel club try and put in.
Saucery · 03/02/2022 07:14

Ben Wallace being touted fits in nicely with the ramping up of blether about ‘Levelling Up’
Here, have a NORTHERN PRIME MINISTER! Look, he represents the NORTH! Don’t tell us we don’t care about you, because we have made our best stuffed dummy PM!

DuncinToffee · 03/02/2022 08:54

Passed is like saying pissed when you mean pissed off

This will cheer people up, can be applied to squirrels
