Anyone watched this… I can’t bring myself to watch it, but it’ll be coming to cinemas shortly.

What is the best milk substitute you have tried? Specifically when added to tea, I don’t mind the substitutes in cereal but my tea tastes grim without milk.

Oat milk is the best imo .. takes a while to get used to it but I wanted to do made myself get over it!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 29/01/2022 20:33

I dislike vegan diets but Im on one because I cannot live with myself knowing this cruelty continues, Im willing to give up all animal products for this reason even though I no longer enjoy my food.

TwittleBee · 29/01/2022 20:33

It took us a while as a family to adjust to oat milk, especially our 4 year old but now we all much prefer oat milk (although I'm enjoying coconut milk in my coffee recently).

Likewise with cheese, we all really struggled to adjust to vegan cheese but now love it.

The smell of anything dairy really makes us all feel rather sick.

MIL often attempts to give DS1 hot chocolate with cows milk in and he rejects it after 2 sips as he says it tastes like sick.

Anyway. My point being. It takes a few weeks but then you get used to it and then you end up preferring it.

@StylishMummy

If anyone had a clue about British farming - you'd see this is vegan sensationalist propaganda Hmm
Really? I was brought up on a farm. Becoming vegan ostracised me from my entire family.
Shehasadiamondinthesky · 29/01/2022 20:36

Also what is vegan proaganda? Do you think we do this for fun or to be controversial? Its bloody difficult being a vegan and I don't enjoy it but there comes a time when you see things for what they are and know that wrong is wrong.

GingerGloucester · 29/01/2022 20:40

I haven’t found a good substitute for cow milk in English Breakfast, but I have found swapping to Darjeeling has been a big help as it still tastes like English Breakfast but just a bit lighter and more delicate in taste so I can have it black without milk

Bywayofanupdate · 29/01/2022 20:42

Oatly barista Brew

VelvetChairGirl · 29/01/2022 20:42

Soya is the best

FrenchyQ · 29/01/2022 20:43

My husband watched a video of cruelty in a slaughterhouse a couple of months ago and it really disturbed him. So he decided that he would only buy local meat where he has actually seem where the animals live and where they die. It means we've cut down meat to about twice a week as the meat is more expensive but our diet as a family is so much better. I don't think I dare tell him about COW as then he'll be rethinking alot more of his diet.

Suzi888 · 29/01/2022 20:43

A house cow, that’s amazing @twinkletoesimnot Most animals do have enough of their offspring after a certain age don’t they.
@Knockoneofftheshelftowin I agree (I don’t eat it) but I do think the intensity of the farming is too great. You simply can’t do it kindly. DH only eats free range/organic too, after an unfortunate experience buying a cheap portion of poultry that didn’t look right - and DH will eat anything.
@callingon Yup, I worry about that too. It feels like you can’t win sometimes. Why is it so hard!!!!

So, I’m intending to sponsor a cow. I’ll let DD pick the cow in the morning.
www.ahimsamilk.org/ shame you can’t get your hands on the milk though- the waiting list is too long.

Actually 4 🙈
We did start with one. They are lovely 🥰

Suzi888 · 29/01/2022 20:50

@GingerGloucester I’ll pick some up.
@loloballlolo butter - thanks I’d forgotten about that. Confused. I think I need to go through my cupboards!
@FrenchyQ - that bothers me most. Raised for food and to add insult to injury they’re tortured beforehand.
@TwittleBee- I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. Perseverance is the key.

I can’t bring myself to watch it

Well perhaps you should if you are going to make other people watch it OP! How hypocritical is that!?

Of course the irony is that what this vegan propaganda will do is drive all the small scale farmers, who treat their animals well and humanely, and which are good for the environment, out of business so that the only livestock producers who remain will be the huge scale industrial operations, that do the most harm. Plus we will be shipping in our food from overseas producers, this causing even more environmental harm.

The road to hell is paved with good intentions.

GromblesofGrimbledon · 29/01/2022 20:52

I was vegan for 15 years then gradually introduced dairy and fish and some meats back into my diet. I've now again given up milk and switched to oat milk and have cut down dairy in general.

Question for those buying the McPlant burger: surely you're giving your money to MacDonald's by doing this. That seems to defeat the purpose of being vegan.

Yes I've lived on a farm, married to a farmer. I've seen with my own eyes the suffering that these poor animals go through. You need to stop lying to yourself.
Fallagain · 29/01/2022 20:54

You need one which is forfeited with calcium and iodine.

Birdkin · 29/01/2022 20:54

Definitely oat for tea/coffee (just fyi get the chilled stuff, the longlife stuff curdles). I do like almond but it’s just not sustainable.

Coconut is banging in a hot chocolate.

elbea · 29/01/2022 20:55

@angelalansburysteapot if everyone went vegan tomorrow we’d still need animals for arable and fresh produce agriculture.

Animal grazing is crucial for a healthy soil structure, their manure is crucial for organic agriculture. The best arable farms using grazing as part of a break to ensure healthy, bio diverse soil. This is a great article that explains it! www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/aug/25/veganism-intensively-farmed-meat-dairy-soya-maize

My dad was an intensive pig farmer for over 30 years and I worked there part time when I was younger, so I know plenty about British farming.
stilldumdedumming · 29/01/2022 20:59

Oatly makes me cross - there's no need for their normal milk to split in coffee - I'm sure it's a scam to get you to buy the barista version.

Aldi oat milk is great! Perfect in hot strong coffee.

ALbigbump · 29/01/2022 21:01

Unsweetened oat milk but put the milk and teabag in before the boiling water, makes a big difference. Aldi’s oat milk is great. Froths up a treat in an aerochino too

@GromblesofGrimbledon- that was me. I’m not vegan/vegetarian. I eat, very rarely (free range) chicken and sometimes fish. I agree with you McDonald’s is not great. I’m trying to minimise my bad choices and make kinder ones. @twinkletoesimnot 4! Goodness, you must have a lot of land. I’d love a little small holding, if ever I win the lottery. We stayed in West Wales once, visited a pub with free roaming cows. You could go up to them and give them a hug, was a bit scary at first!

Haven’t found a good dairy free cheese. The few I’ve tried are disgusting.

RollneckJumper · 29/01/2022 21:13

Oatly whole milk is the best!

Cows milk... I would rather go without than let that stuff touch my lips. Cows milk is for calves!

OohThatCat · 29/01/2022 21:13

I find soy works the best for me in tea, unless it’s black tea with any kind of acidic fruit in, then soy will curdle and I’ll switch to oat. Both froth great for lattes in our milk frothed!
