to think titanic movie is cringy

Came out when I was 12 and I loved it but at 36 caught it on tv last night and it is so cringy. Whilst I think Winslet and Leo are great actors their acting in it is cringe although I don't know if it's their inexperience or just the script. Every 2nd line is 'Jack Rose'. I don't get how both were nominated for Oscars for it when it genuinely wasn't good acting by any means on either part and again I think both are genuinely brilliant in their other films.

Watching it is reminiscent of watching 90s Home and Away or just bad teenage tv acting. Yea the effects are great but the script in itself is just so mediocre and so 12 year old girl stuff. It didn't occur to me how little the film actually go into the subject matter of the Titanic like the creation of it and the aftermath of the sinking etc.

The rich in it like Cal and Rose's mum are so 1 dimensional greedy villains which is kind of hypocritical considering how wealthy Cameron himself is, and the poor Irish on 3rd class are just laughably bad and cliche with accents Irish people never have. And I say that as an Irish person myself so no racism.

A critic said after that the only reason it got oscar noms was because of the money it gained and I sort of agree. Again the effects and cinematography were great but the film itself was just a predictable cringe fest.

@makkapacca

Well, let's just say I've never met a single man who refused to watch the scene because she wasn't worth his sight, and nor have you

she was 22 and young looking, many of us are bangable at that age but still doesn't mean we are beauties.

I truly don't know why this is such a sticking point for you. If she wasn't anything special to look at, the film must have had even more good points to compensate the men who most definitely also flocked to see it.

I'm also getting uncomfortable devoting this much effort to picking apart the looks of a very talented actress.

TatianaBis · 30/01/2022 15:06

@makkapacca

And William Shakespeare wasn't writing teen flicks either. That script is still taught in schools and performed on stages now

it still doesn't make it any less of a chick flick in the same way emma or jane austen novels are. Yes Shakespeare wrote plays for the masses but r and j would have being predominantly aimed at the fairer sex.

What complete twaddle.
Pootlepoodle · 30/01/2022 15:09

Is this really about a dislike for Kate Winslet?

She is absolutely gorgeous in that film by anybody’s standards and to deny that suggests there’s something else going on.

2Gen · 30/01/2022 15:16

YANBU.
I don't think much of it. It's just OK but I wouldn't ever pay to watch it. I do remember being very upset at the end of the old film when I was a child though. Watching the ship break in half and sink into the freezing water had me in bits and haunted me for a long time. I was a bit nervous the next time we went to Ireland on the ferry too!
I also agree with you about the cod-Irish accents. There are so many excellent actors and a rake of extras in Ireland, I can never understand why they don't employ them to play Irish characters. It really annoys me so it must piss native Irish people right off!

TatianaBis · 30/01/2022 15:17

Slow clap for @HelloFrostyMorning’s Titanic flounce.

Imagine posting opinions without writing imo every time!

Winslet never sold the film though, it was the massive budget and the revolutionary special effects that did that along with the publicity and it been a James Cameron film. The only actor in the cast who'd have sold the film was Leo following the success of R an J, Winslet was very much an unknown then and ,male audiences typically would not come to a film to see an actress.

even if they'd used all Irish cast they'd still have been directed to be stereotypically Irish. Any Irish part in Hollywood is always so cringe.I am Irish and the amount of people abroad who think we are all 'very friendly/very nice'....eh no we are just like the rest of youse.

Winslet was stunning. She is still very goodlooking. Her breakthrough role was Marianne in S&S.

The problem in Titantic is that Leo was quite small. She needed a more built male star as she’s quite tall and curvy.

Ah, so it DID have good points!

he's 6 foot- that's not small for a man by any means, above average if you check and look at all the pics of them then and now, he is a good head bigger than her.

Iirc Cameron originally cast Clare Danes, off the back of R + J. But she pulled out citing exhaustion. Between the lines I think she may have been in love with Leo.

I highly rate Clare Danes as an actress, but Kate is more classically pretty.

TatianaBis · 30/01/2022 15:30

It’s not his height. He’s wasn’t very broad. He looks quite small next to her. I think he’s built his physique since then. They were quite young.

this was never confirmed and many reports say otherwise, it was said she was considered to offered. I saw an interview with her when she said she was never offered it so I'm confused over this.

most men won't be broad at that age though as he was 22, the broadness usually comes in later 20s or 30s.

Entirely depends on the bloke. Chris Hemsworth was always massive.

DrSbaitso · 30/01/2022 15:34

The character was supposed to be boyish rather than manly. Romantic rather than action hero. That's a particular kind of look and physique.

makkapacca · 30/01/2022 15:34

only because he had to work out for the role of thor, and no I'd say most men at 22 are still not built into men and still look quite teeny. The man build comes later.

TatianaBis · 30/01/2022 15:39

It may have simply been that she was one of the front runners, not actually cast. But I definitely saw in an interview with her saying that Leo wasn’t sure but decided to do it, but she felt she wasn’t ready for it. They’d just finished filming R + J in Mexico.

Nope, he was in Homeaway long before Thor and he was massive in that.

He’s just one of those huge Aussie blokes.

Toadsinholes · 30/01/2022 15:40

I always thought she looked too ‘big’ for him too - maybe cos she has a wider face than him? Can’t quite put my finger on it. I never thought they looked right together.

makkapacca · 30/01/2022 15:42

I also don't get the chemistry they apparently had, they seemed to be 2 kids in a school play or in a soap opera.

I agree. Clare Danes would have been more balanced sizewise.

But they’re both fantastic actresses.

kylie122 · 30/01/2022 15:56

No I think it's still amazing haha

Mamamia7962 · 30/01/2022 16:03

I loved it, thought it was a great film.

LadyEloise1 · 30/01/2022 16:20

I just never "got" how Rose could fall for the Leonardo di Caprio character.
Entirely miscast imho.
Leonardo was too baby faced for her.

The sinking of the Titanic - so sad all those lives lost. Sad
