to think titanic movie is cringy

Came out when I was 12 and I loved it but at 36 caught it on tv last night and it is so cringy. Whilst I think Winslet and Leo are great actors their acting in it is cringe although I don't know if it's their inexperience or just the script. Every 2nd line is 'Jack Rose'. I don't get how both were nominated for Oscars for it when it genuinely wasn't good acting by any means on either part and again I think both are genuinely brilliant in their other films.

Watching it is reminiscent of watching 90s Home and Away or just bad teenage tv acting. Yea the effects are great but the script in itself is just so mediocre and so 12 year old girl stuff. It didn't occur to me how little the film actually go into the subject matter of the Titanic like the creation of it and the aftermath of the sinking etc.

The rich in it like Cal and Rose's mum are so 1 dimensional greedy villains which is kind of hypocritical considering how wealthy Cameron himself is, and the poor Irish on 3rd class are just laughably bad and cliche with accents Irish people never have. And I say that as an Irish person myself so no racism.

A critic said after that the only reason it got oscar noms was because of the money it gained and I sort of agree. Again the effects and cinematography were great but the film itself was just a predictable cringe fest.

@LadyEloise1

I just never "got" how Rose could fall for the Leonardo di Caprio character. Entirely miscast imho. Leonardo was too baby faced for her.

The sinking of the Titanic - so sad all those lives lost. Sad

She was looking to escape her strait-laced, oppressive existence in which she was to be married off to an abusive prick for money alone, for her family, and to have no wishes or desires for herself.

Jack came from a completely different world, showed up her parents for what they really were, loosened her inhibitions, allayed her fears and cared about her to the point of sacrificing his life for her. Since he was boyish rather than manly, he was also closer to her age, unthreatening and full of a puppyish sort of energy and excitement.

Enormously original? Probably not. Relatable and understandable? Well, clichés are clichés for a reason.

It also made him a good contrast to Billy Zane, who was a few years older and definitely more mature and imposing physically, but not in a good way.

Thanks @DrSbaitso I understand what you're saying but
I still think L di C was miscast.

That's fair enough. Personally I thought he had exactly the right look for what the character was supposed to be. Part of the point was that he was young and not steeped in security. After all, if Rose just wanted security, her intended marriage would set that up just fine.

yet it gets classed with the likes of Citizen Kane in its greatness when it's bloody not

Titanic is classed as an enjoyable well-made blockbuster. I don't think anybody puts it in the same league as Citizen Kane.

an enjoyable well-made blockbuster

Perfect succinct description and yes, this is how it's generally seen.

Given what a big deal it was when it was released, it's not really surprising that it drew comparisons to other major films, especially when discussing features such as the run time and sheer spectacle of it.

I thought the boat was good.

MomOfElves · 30/01/2022 18:32

It was one of my favourite films growing up and watched it so often I can't bear watching it now as I know it word for word 🙈 obviously seeing it from a more mature perspective has changed the way you see it now but it shouldn't change how you felt back then. The film doesn't go into a lot of the history of the Titanic but it certainly made me do my own research about the Titanic and the events surrounding it and that makes it a great film in my opinion.

I recall being dragged to see it by my daughter and spent a long time thinking Oh for God's sake, just sink, such a tedious film. At the end when Rose threw the necklace into the sea I thought a far better ending would have been to leap into the sea crying Jackkkkkkkkkkkk.

alittleje · 30/01/2022 19:10

I think people are being a little forgettable if they think Titanic wasn't sold/presented as a modern day Casablanca in its day. It is only after that in retrospect the reviews became more reasonable and I think that's what the op is getting at.
At the time of its release it certainly reached hysteria and I'm not sure overrated is the right word as it's a good film in its own way but the universally loved reviews as if it was a profound master piece was somewhat misleading. Both Winslet and Di Caprio acted it the best they could but it was a lazy script was well beneath their abilities.
