to think titanic movie is cringy

Came out when I was 12 and I loved it but at 36 caught it on tv last night and it is so cringy. Whilst I think Winslet and Leo are great actors their acting in it is cringe although I don't know if it's their inexperience or just the script. Every 2nd line is 'Jack Rose'. I don't get how both were nominated for Oscars for it when it genuinely wasn't good acting by any means on either part and again I think both are genuinely brilliant in their other films.

Watching it is reminiscent of watching 90s Home and Away or just bad teenage tv acting. Yea the effects are great but the script in itself is just so mediocre and so 12 year old girl stuff. It didn't occur to me how little the film actually go into the subject matter of the Titanic like the creation of it and the aftermath of the sinking etc.

The rich in it like Cal and Rose's mum are so 1 dimensional greedy villains which is kind of hypocritical considering how wealthy Cameron himself is, and the poor Irish on 3rd class are just laughably bad and cliche with accents Irish people never have. And I say that as an Irish person myself so no racism.

A critic said after that the only reason it got oscar noms was because of the money it gained and I sort of agree. Again the effects and cinematography were great but the film itself was just a predictable cringe fest.

Sentimental Garbage did a great podcast about Titanic.

Highly praised on release, great action sequences but as soon as it took hold in teenage girls minds it began to be seen as silly.

100%, Titanic is no sillier than the Terminator films (which are by the same filmmaker, are equally unsubtle, and also feature a love story between people who’ve known each other a couple of days) but it’s seen as silly and pathetic because teenage girls like it.
HelloFrostyMorning · 30/01/2022 11:51

@Fenella2000

Ugh. I saw it at 12 and was deeply, deeply moved but all the Cool Girls in my class insisted it was shit. “I’m a strong woman who’s going to have a career, I’m not going to cry at silly romantic films”.

Now 36 and I still think it’s a wonderful film and still cry my eyes out. You can all shove it 🤣 The podcast You Are Good did a lovely episode on it recently and host Sarah Marshall has written about it before - www.buzzfeednews.com/article/sarahmarshall/20-years-ago-titanic-took-over-the-world-heres-why

Gone With The Wind is similarly a romantic melodrama, I don’t understand why it’s supposed to be more “highbrow”.

@HufflepuffPride

What is it with posters on Mumsnet saying how much they hate popular films and pointing out all that’s wrong with them? Is it an attempt to look cool and edgy? Well I still like Titanic and I still like Home Alone as well.

As for you who watched it and laughed, well you do realise that really happened and nearly 2,000 people died? But never mind you are so cool and edgy aren’t you 🙄

This annoys me too. It's not just 'yeah I'm not a fan' it's the sneery put downs and mocking of anyone who likes them. The deep rooted snobbery and sneering, that is what fucks me off.

I got verbally bashed and beaten ceremoniously in the late 1990s and early noughties by people who thought they were better than me, because I loved Titanic, had a collection of memorabilia on it, and became a huge Leo fan, (and also a fan of Kate.) I have been a fan of both of them ever since.

I was ripped apart by all the 'cool girls' who only liked art house, Avant Garde, indie films, and thought I was thick and stupid and very immature because I liked Titanic. The Leo bashers told me how shit he was, how he couldn't act for toffee, how The Beach was the wankiest film ever, (even worse than Titanic apparently,) and how much he looked like toddler. Hmm

I took so much shit for years. It only stopped when Leo fell back into favour, after Inception, and Shutter Island came out, (both 2010,) and Leo became hugely popular again.. (And still is...)

I have stayed a fan ever since Titanic, and weirdly, those same arseholes think Leo is a fucking God now. A legend, an icon, a brilliant actor, and fucking gorgeous. I do occasionally mention how they hated him, and mocked me some 2 decades ago, for liking him. They don't remember any of this strangely..... Hmm

HufflepuffPride · 30/01/2022 12:15

See I don’t remember the cool girls not liking it. I was 15 when it came out and all of my peers were obsessed with it, everyone around me was. Even the cool girls (and I definitely wasn’t one of those!).

MrsSkylerWhite · 30/01/2022 12:17

Never seen it: the song put me right off Grin

CaptainThe95thRifles · 30/01/2022 12:18

I thought it was shite when I was 12 and I remain of the same conviction now. I wasn't a cool kid though, the cool kids at my school liked it. I have no interest in Di Caprio now either. I quite liked a bit of Home and Away in that era though Grin

leo never fell out of favour with the masses though,he was always pretty much universally loved. Yes he did fluff like titanic and r and j which were aimed at teenage girl audience yet he had plenty of big universally loved hits like catch me if you can, the departed and gangs of new york many years before inception.

T1 and 2 are on totally different levels to titanic, the scripts were generally complex and interesting. Titanic's was like Saturday morning teen sop opera on Nickledon, huge difference.

I loved Titanic then and I still do today.
There's a lot of people on here giving a lot of time to a film they dislike. Why bother? For example, I think Love Actually is utter tripe but millions of people rave about it. I couldn't be bothered giving an extended rant about how rubbish it is because tbh, everything is down to personal taste and opinion.

TatianaBis · 30/01/2022 12:38

Romeo and Juliet - fluff - really?

TatianaBis · 30/01/2022 12:39

Titanic and Love Actually are two of the most cringe films ever made. Plus Mama Mia.

I LOVE the Terminator films, but neither the characters nor the premise are “complex”! James Cameron is a very unsubtle filmmaker and he’s GOOD at being unsubtle, which is a real skill.

T1 is quite similar to Titanic, if you think about it. Woman has noble qualities she doesn’t quite recognise, is living a life that doesn’t utilise them. She meets a man who has an absolute, totalising love for her, sees the very best in her, helps her survive terrifying disasters and then dies at the end - giving his life for hers. The woman is changed forever by the experience and vows to live her life every day to honour her departed love.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Well, it was bad film and if you want to get all hot under the collar about this, then why don't you get upset with the people who made it this bad and exploitative and who released it to make tons of money from a disaster that cost 2,000 their lives.

Oh yeah, so it exploited the disaster that cost 2000 lives. What about the multiple dozens of WAR films, about Vietnam, WW1, WW2, The American Civil War (Gone with the wind,) 9/11 films, and films about the holocaust, and Hillsborough, and all manner of disasters. Why pick on Titanic? Confused

Pootlepoodle · 30/01/2022 12:41

You are funny OP! First we get comparisons between Titanic and Citizen Kane followed by the randomness of Home Alone v Gone with the Wind and now Terminator with Titanic! 😂

Ok I get that Cameron directed both films but they could not be more worlds apart. One is a sci-fi movie about time travelling robots sent to kill the saviour of mankind before he’s born and the other is a love story about 2 teenagers on a sinking ship. It’s like comparing Star Trek with 50 Shades of Grey. Weird!

Exactly this. Giving soooo much time to a film they allegedly loathe. Bet they watch it at least once a month, with a bar of Cadbury's Dairy Milk, and a bottle of wine.

Seriously though, I HATE film snobs. See also food snobs, cook from scratch snobs, benefit snobs, location snobs, and music snobs. All loathsome.

Because it was a bad film. Or am I not allowed to say that? You happen to like it, good for you.

There have been countless bad films about the other events you have mentioned.

No one is picking on anything.

@ChardonnaysPetDragon You are COMPLETELY missing my point entirely, (conveniently.) Got no answer that's why.

As you were..

everythingthelighttouches · 30/01/2022 12:50

I think it does exactly what it says on the tin.
And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Out of interest, as someone mentioned A Night to Remember, has anyone seen this? It is a YouTube video which compares the two films side by side. Fascinating and surprising.

m.youtube.com/watch?v=gsMy3nWWtHc

Titanic is almost a direct copy of A Night to Remember in all the key scenes. Right down to the camera angles! I hadn’t realised at the time it came out it was a remake.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/01/2022 12:53

Funny how despite being such a professed fan of Leonardo DiCaprio you missed one of his most important films, The Revenant.

As you were.

makkapacca · 30/01/2022 12:55

Why pick on Titanic

because it has global fame the rest didn't bar gtwt and titanic had great reviews at time of release as a brilliant script with great profound performances when it wasn't.

I didn't mention home alone though nor did i bring up the terminator comparisons. I mentioned gone with the wind as several critics compared it to that at time of release so it's not random.

CaveMum · 30/01/2022 13:01

I was 16 when it came out, saw it 4 times at the cinema and sobbed like the hormone-ravaged teen I was Grin

Agree the added storyline wasn’t great, but I guess they needed a “vehicle” to tell the story - it’s far easier to get people to care about the fate of two people than that of hundreds at once.

For me it did spark a lifelong interest in all things Titanic - I have several books on the subject and love to watch documentaries about it. It’s so sad to think that in the not too distant future the ship itself will totally collapse and disappear forever.

HashtagSexy · 30/01/2022 13:04

"When this ship docks, I'm getting off with you."

😂😂😂😂

She'd just done that in the car!

DearlyBeloathed · 30/01/2022 13:09

Well, it was bad film

In your opinion.
