BBC Politics from PMQs 8 Dec
“Can the prime minister tell the House whether there was a party in Downing Street on 13 November?” asks Labour’s Catherine West
“No, but I’m sure whatever happened the guidance... and the rules were followed at all times,” says the PM

I think she's highlighted exactly what went wrong. Lax leadership tied to an extraordinary lack of judgment.

No.10, along with the big govt depts can be very febrile environments - especially during a crisis, where you feel like you're in an exclusive, intimate bubble dealing with the most important matters in the country. It's usually made up of press office/private office/ very senior officials/spads and it can foster a sense of privilege where the rules cease to apply to you.

But a decent leadership team deflates that sense of self importance and gets you back on track. It's very telling that those types of leaders (who used to prevail) are no longer in charge.

DePfeffoff · 31/01/2022 15:03

“he genuinely believes that when it all comes out when all facts are in the public domain that a fair-minded person will see that he was sincere when he said he followed the rules in No 10

So, if he didn't follow the rules but was sincere when he said he had, that has to mean he is happy for people to know that he was too stupid to understand the rules. And we're supposed to entrust someone that thick with negotiations with Putin?

Has he ever corrected this?

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2022 15:10

Has he ever corrected this?

I don't think he has but could be wrong.
He lied

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2022 15:12

How many times does she mention 'party' in the report, has anyone spotted it?

Did the legislation, current in 2020, mention parties? no didn't think so either.
I wouldn't expect SG to talk of parties given she has been asked by the Met not to compromise their investigations.

Your clutching at straws.

Rinoachicken · 31/01/2022 15:12

She is very clear about the impact of the Mets interference and how it’s really limited what she can say, and that she has PLENTY of evidence that she would have liked to analyse and report on in detail but has been prevented on doing so…for now.

That’s quite telling to me. I was skeptical if her before, and perhaps I’m naive, but it read to me that she was pissed off at what she discovered, was fully prepared to lay it all out for everyone to see, and is now pissed off that she’s been prevented from doing so, but is letting everyone know that SHE KNOWS what went on, she has the evidence and she is ready to publish it in full as soon as she’s allowed.

ClaudineClare · 31/01/2022 15:14

It is v significant that she has said the further information that she has but cannot release yet is being kept secure and will not be released to the government.

Rinoachicken · 31/01/2022 15:15

I also wondered at the use of the term ‘gatherings’ - is this perhaps to show that they weren’t work events (or she’d call them meetings). I can’t remember off the top of my head, but was ‘gatherings’ the word used in the lockdown regulations terminology? I.e ‘you must not gather’…’gatherings of more than 6 persons’ etc? If so, it seems she’s making a clear link there to indicate these were ‘gatherings’ that were illegal, even though she can’t explicitly say so.

Alexandra2001 · 31/01/2022 15:16

By which time @Rinoachicken, most people would have moved on, the met will drag this investigation on and on and on.....

longwayoff · 31/01/2022 15:16

Every member in the house today should call him a liar. Call it out loud. Its like the government of Ruritania. Reality is what Boz says it is and two fingers to everyone who cares to dispute it. Brave Sir Boris has just arrived at HOC.

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2022 15:19

Pippa Crerar on the Nov 13 'gathering'

We reported this event in November last year - but were told by No 10 it was "categorically untrue".
I was told that guests in flat were "all getting totally plastered" on evening Cummings left No 10.
Subsequent reports suggest Abba's 'Winner Takes It All' was blasting out.

But it is just a media witch hunt...

Rinoachicken · 31/01/2022 15:20

@Alexandra2001 oh I know. I said that earlier (pages back now I think!) that I fully expect the Met to sit on this and then eventually say ‘no further action/insufficient evidence’.

At which point I hope SH then publishes in full - ALL the evidence. Which would make the Met look very stupid, since they said there wasn’t any, she went off and gathered it herself, and kindly gave them a copy. What are the police FOR if not to investigate crime and gather evidence?!

I wonder if her emphasis on all the evidence that she’s holding securely is to put pressure on the Met to shit on the pot or get off. They can’t say there’s no evidence - she’s supplied it and has it! So they either need to get on with it or back off and let her publish in full.

ClaudineClare · 31/01/2022 15:20

Yes, the regs talk about gatherings, so is the right terminology for the report to use.

DuncinToffee · 31/01/2022 15:23

Brave Sir Boris Grin

ENoeuf · 31/01/2022 15:24

So brilliant. I predict Bozo saying he is grateful for her independent and clear recommendations which he will be implementing asap. Too much pressure on his private secretary so they will get some support. All good what the British public want to hear is …..

VikingOnTheFridge · 31/01/2022 15:30

@ClaudineClare

It is v significant that she has said the further information that she has but cannot release yet is being kept secure and will not be released to the government.
I thought that was telling.
ENoeuf · 31/01/2022 15:33

I want to say sorry and it’s no use saying that this or that is within the rules etc etc

longwayoff · 31/01/2022 15:34

Defenestrations coming up . . .

CSWife · 31/01/2022 15:35

I think the use of the word gathering vs party is very sensible. Party could be seen a open to interpretation (as we know!!), inflammatory and play into people's hand depending on their angle.

Gathering is, IMHO, non-work, unless specifically a work gathering and more closely allies with the language of the covid restrictions. Who gives a fig whether or not something was or was not a party... the point is we weren't even supposed to gather.

ENoeuf · 31/01/2022 15:35

Thanks to Sue
We are making changes now

As predicted it’s an opportunity for him to make changes and look like a fucking hero.

ClaudineClare · 31/01/2022 15:35

He gets it and he will fix it.

Notonthestairs · 31/01/2022 15:35

I've had a nosey and I don't think Johnson ever withdrew his comments about 13th November flat shindig. And now there sufficient evidence of a gathering to warrant a police investigation. What a fibber! And misled Parliament to boot.

Imagine needing to keep the report secure from the Government.

ENoeuf · 31/01/2022 15:36

‘I get it and I will fix it’

Shame on you

TiffanyBucksFizzRainbowBright · 31/01/2022 15:36

I'm tearing my hair out listening to his bumbling.
