Joe Pike
NEW: Met Police deny they have delayed Sue Gray report:
“We have not delayed this report and the timing of its release is a matter for the Cabinet Office inquiry team.”

-Met have received dossier from C.O.
-They will write to potential rule-breakers.
Link to Met statement from the Hugo Gye tweet
news.met.police.uk/news/the-mps-has-today-received-material-from-the-cabinet-office-to-support-its-investigation-441503
My understanding of that - I read it as

 • we are investigating possible breaches
 • we will ask for information in writing from those involved if we feel it's a breach
 • we will decide if to pursue it
 • if we do we will apply for FPN
 • if the person disputes it we'll decide whether to peruse or or not

So basically they could decide to send a penalty but the person can refuse and then they can decide to drop it?

DuncinToffee · 28/01/2022 19:55

Yes that's how I read it too

Shambles

Notonthestairs · 28/01/2022 19:56

Yes they e left it open as to whether they'll pursue through the Magistrates.

Suspect most will pay up rather than risk it.

I'm sure that the Conservative donors will pay a few of these fines for them.

Matthew Parris in The Times tomorrow (Spineless Tories Know That Johnson Must Go)

"There’s a big yellow streak running right through this Conservative Party. They know what Johnson is, they know where he’s taking them, and with eyes as clear as their voters’ eyes they see their descent into national infamy. But as the herd thunders towards its ruin, nobody wants to peel off early. They outsource their own judgment to internal inquiries, events, the law, a virus, a European war … anything."

user1493494961 · 28/01/2022 20:30

Ha Ha..

Peregrina · 28/01/2022 20:30

I just wish that some of the Tories would have the guts to resign the whip. They can sit as Independents and still vote for those Tory policies that they agree with.

They might be risking their seats come the next election, but as long as they carry on as they are, a good many of them will be risking their seats anyway, so they might as well find some principles.

Parris has put the boot in consistently for months now. His column on 8 January was particularly vicious. Tory MPs were, on the whole, pretty decent in his day however misguided their policies.
CSWife · 28/01/2022 20:52

Civil servant of 20 years husband has just about choked on his dinner at the notion of claret and hampers. Also says the idea that a Secretary of State would simply parrot what a perm sec wants is laughable.

Peregrina · 28/01/2022 20:54

Yes, it makes me wonder if there was some sort of parallel Civil Service that most of us never knew about.

Roussette · 28/01/2022 21:01

Gosh...Robert Peston pulls no punches...

Even he can see what a botched cover up this is

Or whether they just watched Yes Minister.
merrymouse · 28/01/2022 21:09

I think Johnson is perfectly capable of bouncing back, but I don’t think as PM.

His only advantage is lack of challengers, but that won’t last forever.

On the other hand the drip drip of leaks will continue and there will be more unforced errors and gaffs.

What’s he going to bounce back to? When you’ve screwed up two of the most powerful jobs in government nobody’s going to put you in charge of anything bigger than paperclips.
Alexandra2001 · 28/01/2022 21:26

Don't believe he will have to bounce back, he will stay as PM.

merrymouse · 28/01/2022 21:26

I think he will bounce back to having a column or a show, and he will make more money than he does now.

Saucery · 28/01/2022 21:27

The Dinner Party circuit will pay more than being an MP. I don’t really care tbh, Fat Cats gonna Fat Cat. As long as he isn’t the figurehead for the brazenly Every Man [sic] for Himself movement.

That’s not a bounce back, it’s Plan D. Much as he loves money, he loves power more.
Notonthestairs · 28/01/2022 21:34

They'll have to boot him out and by the time that's happened who knows what his reputation will be.

If that happens (big if) maybe he could team up with Farage?!

But yes eventually he'll go back to the dinner party circuit.

merrymouse · 28/01/2022 21:37

Much as he loves money, he loves power more.

He likes it in theory, but he has no interest in actually doing the job.

Blossomtoes · 28/01/2022 21:39

Power and doing the job aren’t the same thing. It certainly hasn’t panned out the way he envisioned, that’s for sure.
