to think this woman should take her dog out of the cafe?

So, I'm in a cafe yesterday, eating lunch. Dogs are allowed, which is OK with me, and there are several, sitting quietly by their owners.
Except one, that keeps on doing that piercing high pitched yap, randomly. The owner, every time, looks lovingly at the dog, and says 'shush' . An the dog does it again. And again.
For about 20 minutes, when she finishes her lunch and leaves.
There is outside seating and AIBU to think that she should go outside.

Love dogs in cafés. They’re no dirtier than people so long as they’re not on chairs or licking the table.

Continuous yapping would be annoying yes. As is any continued screaming, crying or shouting.

Wendybyrdesmissingconscience · 28/01/2022 18:11

@KarmaStar

I'd much rather listen to that than a screaming fed up/spoilt/ignored baby or toddler. Why shouldn't she look lovingly at her dog? You don't know why the dog was making a noise. You should have gone outside of you didn't like it. She wasn't ignoring her dog just reassuring him. 🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕🐶🐕
It’s totally irrelevant why the dog may have been making a noise. The owner should have taken it out if it was being continuously noisy and disturbing other diners. The same applies for babies and children.

There’s no way I’d allow my dog to make a racket like that and sit and do nothing.

Deadringer · 28/01/2022 18:13

That would drive me mad but then i don't like dogs in cafes and avoid ones that allow them.

Willyoujustbequiet · 28/01/2022 18:21

Yanbu. She should have taken it out.

I'm a dog owner and entitled dog owners piss me off.

ClaudiaWankleman · 28/01/2022 19:26

Don't get me started....I'm allergic to dogs, just do not understand how this all started, it's so unhygienic.

So presumably you don't go to dog friendly cafes then @MissPiggy5 and have absolutely zero chance of ever encountering such a situation. Your opinion is vitally relevant.

TooManyPJs · 28/01/2022 19:32

YABU. Because EVERYONE loves her dog as much as she does and are simply delighted by its yapping. Or anything else it chooses to do.

RozHuntleysStump · 28/01/2022 19:40

I love dogs 🐕

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 28/01/2022 19:42

Wafflesnsniffles and Wendybyrdesmissingconscience exactly!

I spent years leaving my meals to go cold to remove one child or another from a restaurant as a baby or toddler, when they got noisy or restless. You don't sit there eating if your baby or toddler is disturbing people - you go outside. The same applies to dogs. You only take babies and toddlers to restaurants which allow them - some have no children or no under 12s policies. Allowing children doesn't mean that parents should sit and gaze adoringly at them while they yell and shout - it means that children are allowed but doesn't exempt parents from removing them when they're disturbing others. The same goes for dogs - dogs allowed means well behaved dogs not any and all dogs and any and all noise and disturbance caused by dogs.

ilovesooty · 28/01/2022 19:51

@StoneofDestiny

Dog shit everywhere now loud yapping in the cafe. Geezo is there no end to it.
It wasn't shitting.

Good dog owners don't let their dogs shit everywhere anyway.

With regard to this I think it depends on how noisy and disruptive to ithers' enjoyment the dog actually was.

Humans who disturb others should make their noise outside too in most circumstances, unless SN is a factor.

mrsm43s · 28/01/2022 20:46

It was a dog friendly cafe, so if the dog was behaving in a normal dog way and making normal dog noises (so barking/yapping when something disturbed/startled it) then its not really a problem. If it was barking/yapping continuously, then the owner should have removed it because it was clearly distressed and unable to settle.

If you don't want to deal with normal dog behaviour, don't go to one of the few designated dog friendly establishments. It's really odd to go to somewhere that specifically markets itself on being for people to bring dogs, and then complain that you don't want to be somewhere where dogs to behave as dogs normally do. Similarly, don't go to McDs or Pizza Hut and complain about crying babies or noisy, overexcited toddlers. There's plenty of dog free, child free places to go if that's what you are looking for.

burnthur5t · 28/01/2022 20:52

Dog friendly cafe so I wouldn't go there

Barking and yapping is expected if it's a dog friendly cafe

Zerrin13 · 28/01/2022 23:50

There is an endless selection of eateries that don't allow dogs.

Mariposista · 29/01/2022 00:19

I have taken my puppy to cafes since he was 12 weeks old to get him used to behaving well in public. He enjoys hoovering up crumbs, but generally sits quietly next to us. It’s not acceptable to expect other people to put up with your noisy, disruptive dog, (nor child). If it’s acting up, take it out. In any case I always carry a bone or chewy toy to give him to keep him occupied if necessary - if he sees me eating and drinking he wonders why he doesn’t have anything 🤣

sleepwouldbenice · 29/01/2022 00:30

@Wafflesnsniffles

Sounds no different to the sort of person who thinks no one else minds if they watch stuff on a screen without headphones on a train/bus.

If my dog yapped I wouldnt go and sit in a cafe with it. Not unless I had been able to train it not to yap.

Its so annoying for other customers to have to have their snack/meal out ruined by your precious yappy dog or shouty child or noisy screen.

Yes this

Just as I took my kids outside if they made a fuss in a cafe ( from baby to teeanagerSmile) so I would do the same with my dog. He's a PITA with separation anxiety but my right to be in a cafe doesn't trump anyone elses. Dog friendly or not

StoneofDestiny · 29/01/2022 01:17

Been to loads of pubs where dogs are allowed - never heard a yapping dog. It would clear the pub!
If a dog can't be kept under control it shouldn't be inflicted on others - just keep it outside until it's trained.
I'd not sit with a screeching child in a place where people go to rest and enjoy themselves, so I don't think a dog owner should just sit there while their yapping dog disturbs others.

Clymene · 29/01/2022 01:23

I'd have taken my dog out. My ideal scenario is that no one notices I have a dog with me until I get up to leave. That's the way it should be.

Halfabag · 29/01/2022 02:48

It’s up to the individual business. I hate that everywhere is increasingly dog friendly. I get country pubs etc but now city centre steak restaurants etc. Also, why do people compare dogs to children. Yes both may be annoying but one is a human being and one is a pet. They’re not the same.

100% Agree with you.

My daughter is 12 now but I remember when she was a baby in her pram and we went to a coffee shop or lunch or early dinner and I was a nervous wreck in case she woke up and started crying as it’s totally unacceptable to disturb other people.
On the odd occasion that this happened I would take her to the bathroom or outside for a walk.

So it’s totally unacceptable that a dog should be allowed to make unnecessary noise in a public place and disturb other people.

nalabae · 29/01/2022 04:38

I’m a doggy owner and always stick up for doggy’s but that is annoying and she should have went outside

Joystir59 · 29/01/2022 05:54

There are very few places where I live that DON'T allow dogs, and certainly wouldn't evict a yappy one. We all love dogs here. I live at the seaside.

Joystir59 · 29/01/2022 05:58

You do have to train them to sit quietly, so there is some barking whining and fidgeting until they learn. Sausages help enormously.

Spikeyball · 29/01/2022 07:27

The odd yap is reasonable. Continuous yapping isn't. We sat outside a dog friendly cafe a few weeks ago. Inside there were 3 dogs running around including behind the counter and play fighting each other in the middle of the cafe. Owners who were together, didn't give a shit.

MissPiggy5 · 29/01/2022 09:03

Thank you @ClaudiaWankleman

I live near a small market town in Wales so there are a lot of walkers and tourists hence dogs. The place is overrun with them. I completely understand that coffee shop businesses need to make their customers and "furry friends" (Envy) welcome but just don't seem to take any consideration of those who don't/can't like dogs. On the whole I just get on with it, find a table in a corner etc but what I can't stand is owners who don't control their dogs (I've seen one run loose and around the kitchen!) or let them eat from the table. In those instances I did report to the council (because the owners ignored me) but they weren't interested either. Goodness knows how the hygiene ratings are maintained.

ForgedInFire · 29/01/2022 09:15

The odd yap from a dog wouldn't annoy me unless it was constant. Neither does a crying/screaming child tbh. When I want to eat in peace and quiet, I cook at home.

Notjustanymum · 29/01/2022 09:38

YABU - unless you also propose that shrieking toddlers and over-enthusiastic groups of shrieking post-school-run mums sit outside…
