To think you don't do this?!

Maybe I just don't understand petrol station etiquette but I'm really quite annoyed.
Went to get a fire guard for DS who is determined to get everything he can't have, so I'm pretty exhausted and run ragged. No fuel in car, DS fell asleep within 5 minutes so I go the pay at pump one so I don't have to disturb him, but I have to be fast with white noise playing etc whatever all fine.

Get there and there's a car in the front one so I go in the one behind. Sort my card out, by the time I start pumping he's leaving. So now there's a space in from of me but it's it's far end lane so it's only one car width, I've authorised my card so I can't move pumps.

So a woman drives in the other lane, past 2 empty pumps with the big "WE HAVE LONG PUMPS USE BOTH SIDES" signs. To the exit, then reverses into the space in front of me. I'm finished before she's even finished with her card and just bloody stuck behind her! There's a car in the other lane so I can't get out and just have to sit and wait for her to pump her fuel and fuck about in her car before I can leave.

AIBU to think you don't block someone in who got there before you?!

I know it's small and I was only waiting a few minutes. But she saved herself seconds. I'm so sick of my life being full of people who are happy to inconvenience me to save themselves a fraction of that inconvenience. I genuinely don't even know how I'm still running, my body is killing me, my C section is painful the entire time I'm in the car and I just wanted to quickly grab some fuel.

YANBU rude, she should have just waited or used a free pump.

YABU use what pump you want even if you block someone else in.

Yabu.

You use what pump you can get to

BusterGonad · 28/01/2022 13:17

I thought most Garages have enough room in between pumps when in use, for cars to go when they're done?

Ipadflowers · 28/01/2022 13:17

I’m sorry op but it really is people are allowed to use any free pump.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 28/01/2022 13:18

Could you have reversed out?

akissbeforebed · 28/01/2022 13:20

Thing is, she had no idea how long you were going to be.

CanofCant · 28/01/2022 13:21

Sorry your section is hurting. From what you've described though it seems she was not BU I'm afraid. There's usually a gap between pump lanes for the car behind to pass through. I hope your afternoon is more relaxing BrewCakeFlowers

Takingabreakagain · 28/01/2022 13:22

YANBU this is one of the reasons why fuel stations have the in/ out procedures. She should have waited or used one of the other available pumps. Her behaviour seems pretty.

worriedatthemoment · 28/01/2022 13:22

She has every right to go in the space its a couple minutes to wait
I hate using the long pumps as they are a pain so prefer to put fuel in on the correct side
The only etiquette is not pushing in front of someone

amylou8 · 28/01/2022 13:23

An empty pump is fair game. If you're blocked in you wait for the person blocking you to finish and move. YABU.

MadMadMadamMim · 28/01/2022 13:23

YABU. You don't understand pump etiquette. There was a pump free and she pulled in to use it. Your C section and the pain you are in is entirely irrelevant and not something she could possibly know.

You expected her not to inconvenience you by making you wait - yet it was ok for you to inconvenience her by blocking the way to the first pump and expecting her to sit and wait behind you. If everybody does that then large queues build up.

SpunBodgeSquarepants · 28/01/2022 13:24

Off-track a bit, but your DS is moving around enough for you to have to buy a fire guard, but your section is hurting..?

CanofCant · 28/01/2022 13:24

" I'm so sick of my life being full of people who are happy to inconvenience me to save themselves a fraction of that inconvenience. "

Just reread this bit, while I think the petrol station woman was NBU, I hope you are able to start putting yourself first, especially as you are physically recovering from surgery and are run ragged and probably sleep deprived.

ShirleyPhallus · 28/01/2022 13:24

Why didn’t you reverse out?

babyjellyfish · 28/01/2022 13:25

How old is your baby? If he's old enough to be moving around, you might want to get your C-section scar looked at if it's still hurting you.

PattyPan · 28/01/2022 13:25

It is unreasonable in pretty much all circumstances to block someone else in, unless it’s like a criminal getaway car or something!

Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 28/01/2022 13:25

There was absolutely no space to get out, I could have reversed out of the one way entrance but with DS in the back I couldn't really have reversed out of the garage I to oncoming traffic.

Well I'm never waiting patiently again for someone to finish 🤣

It was the very end one so a wall one side, pumps on the other side. I was already pumping when she arrived so obviously I was going to be less time than her. It would never occur to me to do that, if I'd needed that side I'd have just waited behind them.
I guess it's another thing to add to the list of drawing myself trying to help everyone else.
Sorry just absolutely on the brink atm.

HiCandles · 28/01/2022 13:25

She should have used one of the ones she drove past to get to the space in front of you. They have very long cables now and it's easy to reach the other side of the car. If her car was too big for her to manage a normal pump maybe she shouldn't have such a big car.

Comedycook · 28/01/2022 13:27

You are being ridiculous I'm afraid. I never stretch the hose over as I find it really tricky and end up spilling petrol on myself so I only go to the ones on the side of my petrol cap. I think you are letting your stress and tiredness cloud your judgment. Your life is currently being dictated by your ds and his schedules and it's your entire world and you cannot possibly see that others aren't factoring this in. I get it...I've been there. In a few years, you'll look back and laugh Flowers

Somebodylikeyew · 28/01/2022 13:27

Ah love. You sound done in Flowers

I think YABU, sorry. If you can get to a pump you do- anything else just gets too complicated and you’d end up with queues out of the forecourt and into the road.

I hope you’re home now. With painkillers and Cake

Getyourjinglebellsinarow · 28/01/2022 13:28

@babyjellyfish

8 month, it definitely needs looking at, the cut is still red and swollen and everything from there to my belly button level is painful to put pressure on. I have not had a minutes rest since he was born, I'm amazed it's still closed tbh. Don't have time to faff about getting myself to the doctors though.

littlepeas · 28/01/2022 13:29

How old is your ds? Not what you asked, but you shouldn't be driving if you still have c section pain! You need to be able to turn around to manoeuvre and do an emergency stop pain free. If it is still hurting weeks or months down the line you need to see your GP.

billyt · 28/01/2022 13:30

If a pump is empty I will use whichever side is free.

No way am I waiting for someone at another pump to move, that defies logic.

Just because you filling up when she arrived does not mean she should have assumed you would be finished first. 1. She won't know how much fuel you are getting 2. You may decide to go shopping even though you are at pay at pump position.

Sorry OP, you're beyond AIBU.

Soubriquet · 28/01/2022 13:30

OP you must make time to see the doctors

Having it inflamed like that at 8 months is a worrying sign

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 28/01/2022 13:31

She did use a free pump... not her fault you didn't want to reverse.

babyjellyfish · 28/01/2022 13:32

That doesn't sound normal.

If you've been in pain for 8 months since giving birth whilst looking after a young baby, it's not surprising that you are feeling this way and that small irritations can feel much bigger than they actually are.

Please prioritise your health and get your scar looked at.

I hope the rest of your day goes better. Brew
