Was I wrong to complain about queue jumping

Pootlepoodle · 28/01/2022 11:50

I am in a supermarket queue. There are only 2 people on the til and no self service. Long queue, about 10 people in front of me. The woman immediately in front of me has a basket of about 3 items but is then joined by her partner who has a trolley full of items.

It’s obvious that she joined the queue in order to placemark whist her partner does a proper shop.

I was annoyed by this and so I complained to them that it was not acceptable. They countered with “we’re shopping together”. I replied that if everyone did that no one would ever get to the front of the queue before closing time.

Who was being unreasonable?

The queue wouldn't be the same length because OP has chosen to queue behind someone with 3 items in their basket. She didn't choose to queue behind someone with an overflowing trolley

There were 10 people in front of her in this queue. I highly doubt the other option was any better!

Aderyn21 · 28/01/2022 19:13

I can't see what they did wrong. I get that it's irritating for the people who thought they were only behind someone with a small basket, but if it's one transaction and one member of the couple queued, they haven't technically queue jumped.

Cheeseandlobster · 28/01/2022 19:27

What the hell am I reading on here? Op yadnbu. Its pushing in and rude. It doesn't matter if they were together. I join queues based on who is in front. If I joined a queue with more baskets than trolleys then someone came along with a full trolley, it impacts on my time and the time of people behind me. And it is cf behaviour. You can't placemark in a supermarket queue. They were both out of order. Good on you for speaking up op

Thank you @Cheeseandlobster

I’ve been on MN since before penis beaker etc and have been resigned to the low bar of late but your post has given me comfort WinkCake

I think @Pootlepoodle you need to clarify how long you where in the queue before the trolley joined.

HelloFrostyMorning · 28/01/2022 19:47

@Juanmariaramierz

That is so annoying when someone does that and you are right to call them out. It's the same for me when standing in a queue to use a cash machine. The person withdraws money then puts another card in and withdraws from another card. I always think you have had you're turn...bugger off to the back of the queue and wait till its you're turn again.
PMSL like fuck am I going to the back of the cashpoint queue, if I want to make a withdrawal from another card. Or another withdrawal from the same one.

Are you taking the piss? 🤣

I bet you spit venom at someone who has 11 items at the '10 items or less' checkout too, and go charging over to customer services demanding to speak to the manager, about how enraged you are that such atrocities are allowed to happen! Shock #firstworldproblems #chillthtefuckout

@Pootlepoodle

My other bug bear is people who suddenly stop walking in the middle of the street, perhaps to check their phone etc. FFS!

Don't walk so close behind people then. Then you won't be so badly affected by people having the TEMERITY to stop walking. Hmm I bet you do the same on the road too... Drive too close to the car in front then kick off when they suddenly brake!

I think you need to have a glass of wine and a good night's sleep. You sound angry about a lot of things. Smile Same goes to a few others here.

HelloFrostyMorning · 28/01/2022 19:48

@Keke94LND

I don't see the difference between this and the woman in front of you already having a big trolley? The queue would be the same length and you'd still have to wait in the same queue?

This.^ It's a batshit non-issue. Some people need to get a hobby, or go running or walking. Burn off some of that pent up anger. Grin

@PinkVelvetandGrey

The queue wouldn't be the same length because OP has chosen to queue behind someone with 3 items in their basket. She didn't choose to queue behind someone with an overflowing trolley.

The OP shouldn't mind waiting though, because she has clearly already been in the queue for at LEAST 20 minutes, because the husband of the woman in front of her, has done an entire trolley full of shopping in the time the OP has been standing there in the queue (according to the OP.)

Momicrone · 28/01/2022 20:01

Yanbu, it's proper taking the piss

PinkSyCo · 28/01/2022 20:18

Oh this would have REALLY pissed me off! Well done OP for having the guts to pull them up on their sneakiness. I hope they had the decency to be at least a bit embarrassed when you did.

SquirrelG · 28/01/2022 20:27

I would be annoyed, but wouldn't have said anything. I have been behind people in the express line recently (several times) who have had a full trolley instead of the maximum 16 items - I just seethe internally, not worth making a fuss about it.

Juanmariaramierz · 28/01/2022 20:51

You seem to bet an awful lot? Do you have a gambling problem or just rabbit on and think you are funny and interesting?

Pootlepoodle · 29/01/2022 04:53

Are you on the wrong thread or just on glue?

I had something similar a few months ago. I was queueing at the till with about 10 items and a woman came over with just a chocolate bar so I said she could go in front. So she did, then She shouted to a family member who came running over with a trolly absolutely full of stuff.
Then that family member shouted to ANOTHER family member who brought ANOTHER trolley of stuff! I absolutely couldn't believe it.
I went to say something but DP stopped me saying they looked like they'd react badly which is probably true as they started having a go at the staff and kicking off before they left. The cheek of some people.
I used to see people do this all the time what you have described when I used to work in a supermarket.

Pootlepoodle · 29/01/2022 05:44

Oh I see. Sorry @Juanmariaramierz Flowers

Same. I have been here for around 20 years under various names and have seen other threads complaining about the same issue where most people have agreed it's unreasonable to do this. I don't understand the responses this time. I am sure if some of these posters were on a lunch break or running late for something, they wouldn't feel so meh about it
