Was I wrong to complain about queue jumping

Pootlepoodle · 28/01/2022 11:50

I am in a supermarket queue. There are only 2 people on the til and no self service. Long queue, about 10 people in front of me. The woman immediately in front of me has a basket of about 3 items but is then joined by her partner who has a trolley full of items.

It’s obvious that she joined the queue in order to placemark whist her partner does a proper shop.

I was annoyed by this and so I complained to them that it was not acceptable. They countered with “we’re shopping together”. I replied that if everyone did that no one would ever get to the front of the queue before closing time.

Who was being unreasonable?

Had it a few years back when I let someone go in front of me as they just had a few cartons of milk. Of course they then unpacked the contents of a shopping trolley to pay for. I was a bit pissed off as I did say "you go in front as you only have a few things"

I still let people go in front, If I have a big shop, but now I am specific to ask "is that all you have?" Incase they pull out a monster shop from somewhere Grin

Polyputthekettleon · 28/01/2022 14:27

Loads of people do this. M&S, Tesco,Next,Primark, most busy places where King queues are likely. Some just send their children to placemark until they get their shopping. I don't do this myself, but if I did and you complained to me I would have told you to do one.

MinglingFlamingo · 28/01/2022 14:28

I would have tutted loudly and given them stink eye but wouldn't have actually said anything.!then moaned to anyone and everyone about it for at least a week

Polyputthekettleon · 28/01/2022 14:28

Where long queues are likely even

Feedingthebirds1 · 28/01/2022 14:28

@BoredZelda

It’s different if someone was stood there with a trolley full, and their partner appears with a basket and few more items

The other way around is pure cheek

It's exactly the same thing, you are still there behind a trolley and a basket.

It's not the same thing. If they had finished their shopping properly and then joined the back of the queue nobody would bat an eyelid - that's what you do. So the OP wouldn't have been behind a trolley and a basket. They are place holding so that when they've finished they don't have to queue for as long, but those behind them have to wait longer.

They must see that doing it that way has a benefit to them because they wouldn't do it otherwise.

jytdtysrht · 28/01/2022 14:29

It's certainly cheeky of them but I wouldn't have tangled with them over it.

Reviewer123456 · 28/01/2022 14:30

It would annoy me. Ignorant shoppers in front of you. Well done for saying something to them.

nannybeach · 28/01/2022 14:30

My local Tesco lady week, queue for self service,so went to cashier. Woman put her basket on the counter, then trundled round the shop getting her shopping. It's one thing, when you have forgotten an item, but this was another level

Polyputthekettleon · 28/01/2022 14:30

Basically , unless you let me go ahead of you based on what I had in my trolley/basket , I was in the queue before you, so how many items I have is none of your f***g business

Pootlepoodle · 28/01/2022 14:34

Bingo

I dint think people read threads properly on here.
op thought she was behind a smaller shop & based her behaviour/ decision on that information.
Shyster shopper turns up from nowhere…hadn’t queued & pushed in! 😂
So… of course YANBU - l would have said something too!
Although not in the supermarket where l work ( if I’m in uniform 😉)

HelloFrostyMorning · 28/01/2022 14:38

@Marianne1234

Argh this would annoy me.

Also the people behind you who then run to beat you to join a just-opening till. Fuck you.

I do that. You snooze you lose.

Anyway, what's the problem with that? It shortens the queue I'm in. 🤷

Do you also get angry with the people who join the queue next to you if they get served first?

1forAll74 · 28/01/2022 14:38

This would not annoy me, and I would not compain about it to the person,or anyone else. If you have about 5o people in a shop somewhere, you can well bet, that about 20% of those people are complainers of many things.

HelloFrostyMorning · 28/01/2022 14:42

@Pootlepoodle I can see how it would be a bit annoying, but I wouldn't have said anything tbh. Also, I have to say I have NEVER seen this happen, like ever. I have seen people pop back into the store for one or two things, like if they forgot the bread, or their eggs, but I have never seen anyone buggar off into the store, and get a trolley load more stuff.

It is annoying if they're already being served, and they race off back into the store, and hold the queue up, but if they're not holding it up, I can't see the issue to be honest.

Polyputthekettleon · 28/01/2022 14:44

@Pootlepoodle no, its not bingo. If I was that lady who was in front of you in the queue and had her oh bring a trolley of stuff I would have still been in front of you. How many items I had at the time you joined the queue and how many items I have since you joined the queue ain't your f***g business. If you are not happy, you can always go join a different queue.

Apparently half of the posters here have this attitude

Jeez unclench OP.

You know not everyone has to agree with you. Surely that’s the point of posting on here, to get a range of opinions.
You do sound rather uptight.

UnsuitableHat · 28/01/2022 14:49

Bit annoying but probably ok for them to do that - if they'd joined the queue together you'd still have the trolley. I wouldn't have been that bothered probably.

Pootlepoodle · 28/01/2022 14:51

You do sound rather uptight.

I’ll take uptight over rude and ill mannered.

This. ^ You seem rather angry that some people are disagreeing with you @Pootlepoodle

Maybe you should take a break from the site for an hour, get a cup of tea, put your feet up, and calm down. Smile

RumpoleoftheBaileys · 28/01/2022 15:03

@HelloFrostyMorning

I think they may still be in the queue... Grin

maddy68 · 28/01/2022 15:05

Non issue.

withlotsoflove · 28/01/2022 15:54

I work in customer services & have regularly suggested we need a sheep dog to help some people shop!
I’m really thinking this today.
Oh, and a trap door for the exceptions selfish ones! 😂

withlotsoflove · 28/01/2022 15:55

*exceptionally

3peassuit · 28/01/2022 16:04

It would annoy me. I tend to seethe to myself rather than say anything to the offender. The table grabbers in cafes infuriate me, so selfish.
