For me, it was Paris. Not an AIBU, I know

If anyone learns anything from this thread and others like it, hopefully it's to research locations a bit better and not overhype a place before they go. EVERYWHERE has pros and cons. The good thing about a holiday vs. living somewhere is that you can ignore the cons and just enjoy the positives for a few days or weeks!

Vegas,( we were there to see a few shows but besides that everything was grotty)
Surfers Paradise. (The worst - nothing to do at all)
Rome - all the hustle

BorsetshireBanality · 28/01/2022 07:29

Nice definitely!

Expensive tolls on the autoroute to get there, and roads in and around city dreadful to drive on (maybe the rumours of taxes used for corruption are true!)

@SomewhereOnlyIKnow

Paris - dirty, over priced, horrible place. Wouldn’t go again. Barcelona - felt a bit unsafe, overrated, would never go again. Jamaica - security needed on the beaches, felt very unsafe out of the hotel and tourist places, wouldn’t go again.
Agree about Barcelona. Some cool Gaudi buildings/Miro art but otherwise it felt unsafe compared to other world cities and wasn't impressive. On our last evening there I was mugged on the underground - luckily as it was the end of the trip I only had 10 euros cash left in my bag but still had to spend our last evening ringing my bank in the UK to cancel my cards. Not a safe city - wouldn't go back.

@OakPine

Yeah Edinburgh is a tourist filled shithole! You aren't stuck in traffic - you are the traffic!

Don't come. It was great without you during the pandemic.

Brilliant 😂
emotinium · 28/01/2022 07:32

Don't understand what people are expecting from Vegas either! Don't any of you people google a place before you book an expensive trip there??

User574773662 · 28/01/2022 07:34

Can’t believe people are saying Thailand?! Confused

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/01/2022 07:38

cornwall

MrsLargeEmbodied · 28/01/2022 07:39

so many weddings.

Titfortatfortit · 28/01/2022 07:39

Seychelles

User574773662 · 28/01/2022 07:39

My shitlist is Malaysia and Morocco.

I was in Penang for a short time for work but really didn’t like it, a bit hostile and dirty with nothing to do. Good food though.

I liked Morocco apart from the leery men. I was 15 at the time. The awful men seem to be a running theme with places like Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt and Dubai.

annlee3817 · 28/01/2022 07:42

Some of these have amused me, people's hates are places I've loved :)
Loved Edinburgh, Nice and NYC

Underwhelmed by Inverness, quite industrial, did love the Loch Ness though.

Otherwise I'm not a massive fan of London

Shitandhills · 28/01/2022 07:44

Olu Deniz in Turkey. What a grocklefest.

Catch32 · 28/01/2022 07:44

Some of these are so spot on.

Pisa - nailed it. Absolutely nothing to do there apart from the photo op. It's ugly and bad food.

Paris - expectations couldn't meet up to the reality. Staff rude in every single restaurant we went to.

Dublin - always, always go to Galway. Dublin is so far removed from the traditional cultural Irish experience people are looking for.

habibihabibi · 28/01/2022 07:45

Bali
No infrastructure to cope with waste. So far to go to swim with diapers and walk on dirty beaches.

Malibuismysecrethome · 28/01/2022 07:46

I think you are sold a dream vision of many destinations. I remember when I visited Hong Kong and thought I would see junks in the harbour. More like oil tankers! There was a junk I glimpsed with red sails one evening but although completely different to my expectation I felt strangely let down.

malificent7 · 28/01/2022 07:46

Paris is wonderful...didn't see much filth tbh.

Littlecaf · 28/01/2022 07:48

Marmaris, Turkey

Was surprised by the tackiness. There was a Chuckle Brother bar and a Only Fools and Horses bar which was just awful. Everyone raves about the market but it was 99% fake rubbish clothes. So sad.

KloppsTeeth · 28/01/2022 07:52

Yes to Venice Went as a teenager, back then I had naturally white blonde hair. Felt unsafe the whole time from creepy men who would follow us around, more than one weirdo wanted to touch my hair. Pervs or pickpockets or both perhaps, but felt on high alert the whole time. Water was really smelly. Interesting place but would never go again.

WidgetyWoo · 28/01/2022 07:52

Rhodes old town.

DoraSpenlow · 28/01/2022 07:53

Naples. Dirty, polluted, horrendous traffic, beautiful old buildings covered in graffitti.

Lookforwardtosummer · 28/01/2022 07:54

Ankara

BabycakesMatlala · 28/01/2022 07:54

Puerto Pollensa. I blame a load of MN saying it was beautiful and their happy place. Just a mediocre beach and a shit parade of tourist cafes behind Grin

Dacquoise · 28/01/2022 07:56

Lindisfarne. Completely soulless and a tourist trap althoughit was on my bucket list for years. Northumberland beautiful though and well worth a visit.

rosesareredandpink · 28/01/2022 07:57

Those of you disappointed with Paris should head to Granada Spain and walk around the Alhambra. i believe that’s the stunning scenery and romance you’re really looking for that Paris somehow pretends it has. Half the price too.
