For me, it was Paris. Not an AIBU, I know

OP posts:
Nannyamc · 27/01/2022 22:40

LA..what a boring place. Too much crime hated it. Paris ..not what i expected.Loved San Francisco

sazzy5 · 27/01/2022 22:40

Dubai. Horrible place, the way the women are treated is vile. Everything is fake.

HelloFrostyMorning · 27/01/2022 22:40

@nonono1

Anyone who found NYC underwhelming clearly didn’t do it right!
Agree. I LOVED New York City. That is in NO way underwhelming.
Twirldream · 27/01/2022 22:40

Paris - dirty and felt unsafe

Krakow - smaller than expected and unfriendly people

Hong Kong - filthy and relentless harassment on the streets

Lisbon - people so unfriendly, put me off going to Portugal again

Russia (group tour) - loved it but felt very uncomfortable being stared at intently by the locals and the police everywhere we went

Luredbyapomegranate · 27/01/2022 22:40

Sam Francisco

Admittedly, I was working, but I could not get past the hideous levels of homelessness in one of the richest cities in the US

ABitOfAShitShow · 27/01/2022 22:41

Rome. So dirty, shit food compared to other big cities and while the architecture/artistry is great, it’s very same-y. Also the Sistine chapel didn’t wow me at all - definitely no wailing here!

My wildcard for being unexpectedly great was Lisbon. Went for a sales conference and loved it.

Re: Nice. It’s dirty and a bit crap in the new town but the old town is incredible - and not dirty at all!

OakPine · 27/01/2022 22:41

Yeah Edinburgh is a tourist filled shithole!
You aren't stuck in traffic - you are the traffic!

Don't come. It was great without you during the pandemic.

mummykel16 · 27/01/2022 22:41

London

ASeriesOfTubes · 27/01/2022 22:41

Passed through St Tropez about 20 years ago. It was 20% (admittedly picturesque) harbour and 80% traffic.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/01/2022 22:41

@Luredbyapomegranate I can’t remember any specific places because it has been years since I’ve been!

I just loved the general atmosphere of the place. And the food, and the people.

Also if you can go South of Naples there is some amazing coast (pretty lovely coast to the North too!)

Meadowland · 27/01/2022 22:42

Buenos Aires - dirty, graffiti everywhere

Las Vegas - tired and sleazy

Cannes - clogged with traffic, ridiculously expensive

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/01/2022 22:42

Loathed St Tropez!

Sunsetmom · 27/01/2022 22:42

@Cheshiresun

Should have added Marmaris/Turkey. Letchy men cat calling and touching you, allegedly 5 hotels really 2, bitten to death by mozzies. The whole place ran by male workers; women hidden away.
I second this, the men are vile and made me feel very uncomfortable! I would never return!
Wingedharpy · 27/01/2022 22:42

I hated Lisbon - though I know others love it.
It seemed to be full of mentally and physically ill beggars down every street.
It was also dirty and graffitied to the hilt.
Folk sleeping in doorways and using the doorway next door as their personal toilet.
Maybe we chose a particularly rough bit of it to stay in but I'm not inspired to go back.
Depressing.
And, the woman in the little, tiny, glove shop wouldn't sell me any gloves or show me any of her stock for some reason. Wink

ashorterday · 27/01/2022 22:42

@SpiderinaWingMirror

Port Merion
This made me laugh - I'm not sure it's touted as a wonder of the world or anything? It's just a pretty village by the sea.
Frauhubert · 27/01/2022 22:42

Marrakech. The biggest shite hole on planet earth, with a smell of more shit wafting through the air

couldhavenotcouldof22 · 27/01/2022 22:43

All of Northern Ireland is a kip, except maybe Derry.
Morocco is a shithole. I was so relieved to leave. It's just full of creeps, thieves and beggars.
Barcelona is paradise for sex workers and thieves.
Northampton is a bit of a dump.

Notimeforaname · 27/01/2022 22:43

Hong Kong - filthy and relentless harassment on the streets

Wow. Harassment for what? Just for being a tourist?

HeronLanyon · 27/01/2022 22:43

lured other than stay very central so you can walk and not take too much stuff with you it’s small enough really just to wander. Obvious things like the castle up top (with astonishing views of the whole bay and Vesuvius) getting the fenicula, the fort, the arch museum etc all close by. Churches and squares and great food everywhere, the beautiful galleria arcade (often older buskers singing astonishingly good operatic) stuff Even the day trips are obvious Herculaneum which I’ve always been more fond of even the Pompéi both an easy frequent short train from central station. The other way around the bay down to sulfatara volcanic basin with hot springs and open lava pits (not sure of current arrangements as there was an awful accident the day after I last visitors it and it was then shut for some time), the islands (east ferries from Naples etc. Taxis can be a bit fast.
Keep your wits about you just like any big city but perhaps a little more. Partic around train stations.
I’ve never ever used the tube for some reason.
Tiny little tiny black beaches very central full of families escaping the heat.
The restaurant claiming to be the home of the margerita - think it is real - very good. I tend to book a few special restaurants from here or during the day if possible as queues form (locals as much as anything).
Have fun !

Cairo
Luxor

We were pestered for "Baksheesh" (tip)

The tour guide said you won't get beaten up bu you will get ripped off , a taxi driver will take you to his cousin's gold shop wether you want to or not
DH and I were locked in to a shop .

And the pitiful sight of donkeys , bravely making their way along busy roads pullling a cart absolutely laden while 2-3 men rode on the cart, smacking the donkey every step to keep them moving .
Horses are treated just as badly Angry

OneFootintheRave · 27/01/2022 22:44

@FangsForTheMemory

Gibraltar. Very polluted, hideous food, nothing to do.
Ha ha. So true about the food!
AuntyBumBum · 27/01/2022 22:44
@AuntyBumBum came on to say Giant's Causeway! It's soooo much nicer in the pictures!

Marbella
Casablanca
I've seen more interesting rock formations on random beaches in north Wales Grin

And Casablanca has been trading on the Humphrey Bogart film these last eighty years!

EnglishGirlApproximately · 27/01/2022 22:44

Oh I love Naples, I don't get the hate for it at all! My first morning in Naples consisted of getting lost around back streets, nearly being mown down by handsome young men on mopeds and eating pizza frito at a street stall in a tiny alleyway that had laundry hanging between buildings. Loved it - its a dirty, noisy, vibrant city.
I also love Paris, Cape Town, Jamaica and Birmingham though so don't listen to me Grin
My most underwhelming trip was to St Barts. So many people told me I would love it but I felt like I'd travelled halfway across the world to visit a place that may as well been the South of France (which i like but wouldn't travel that far to). €22 for an average pizza because you can see Phil Collins & some golfers yachts from the restaurant. Not for me.

HeronLanyon · 27/01/2022 22:44

Oh sorry everyone that should have been a message it was too long for thread.

Sunsetmom · 27/01/2022 22:44

Bulgaria… what a dive!
