Moving to Lincolnshire

Apologies for AIBU thread, but thought it might attract more traffic. Live in Devon, work from home, DH retired and we would like to move. We want to clear the last of the mortgage and want a larger plot/outside space. Devon has gone mad with prices (yes I know ours has increased too) but everything is being snapped up before even going on the market or buyers are offering waaaay over asking/guide price. So I though well what about Lincolnshire? Is it a nice place to live?? We like walks, outdoors, sailing etc. I have heard so many conflicting opinions, that would thought I would try MN!! I am keen, DH not so much... Help!

Grantham’s a shithole. Stamford, on the other hand, is gorgeous. It has an art centre, a leisure centre, coffee shops, the best shopping for miles including Peterborough and it’s very pretty. It’s more expensive - for good reason.

ChagSameachDoreen · 15/07/2022 23:44

It's one of those counties that I often forget exists. Inconsequential.

'Our region is responsible for growing 30% of the nation's vegetables and producing 18% of the poultry, with a total agricultural output of over £2bn in 2019, representing 12% of England’s total production.'

Hardly inconsequential! 😆

😂 I can't get worked up to defend my county, but I do love living in a pretty cottage in a beautiful village, where you can leave doors open and feel safe and all I can hear are the birds 👍

Sarah180818 · 16/07/2022 16:10

I live in Lincoln and wouldn't love anywhere else. The bailgate area and cathedral are beautiful and there are some lovely surrounding villages. There are some lovely coastal areas just over an hour away such as Huttoft and Anderby Creek but you're also not far from cities like Sheffield and Nottingham and you can get a train to London in less than two hours

StrawberriesAndCreamPlease · 17/07/2022 18:45

God, you’d have to pay me to live back in Lincoln. It’s somewhere I said I’d never go back to and so far I’ve kept that promise to myself. Houses are cheaper because it’s miles from anything, the city is awful, uphill isn’t anything to write home about. The cathedral is lovely, I’ll give you that. It’s a very backwards and fairly racist county.

I always thought Lincoln was ‘nice’ by virtue of the fact that it’s not the rest of the county. I’m sure some people love Lincolnshire, but if you’re used to London it’s a massive, massive culture shock.

and yes to it being extremely insular. I’m an immigrant, and when I lived in Lincolnshire it was generally assumed that I was Polish (I’m not), and therefore scum of the earth. Also, when I did speak I did not pronounce English words in the regional way (for example ‘ClaHss’ instead of ‘ClaSS’) which apparently made me posh scum of the earth. Like I said earlier, I left as soon as I was able to. Would have been quicker had there been a dual carriageway and I didn’t get stuck behind a tractor.

Roselilly36 · 17/07/2022 19:29

Go for it, I say, we did a similar thing last year, and moved to a different county, 3 hrs away from where we used to live, best thing we have ever done, no regrets.

Of course, we were a bit nervous about it. But in the end we knew we wanted an adventure and what’s the worst that could happen? If we didn’t like it we could move again.

But was it to Lincolnshire?!

Reenskar · 17/07/2022 20:44

Weather is not rubbish. I say that having grown up in the North West 😂.

Moved here some years ago for DH work. Missed the mountains, takes ages to get anywhere and for the past 10+ years have always thought of living here as being temporary with a move back “home” always on the cards.

Now have DC in school and they are happy and settled and I have great friends. Have finally given in and have to admit I love living here.

Lots of things said by PP are true but it has a lot to offer. House prices are finally starting to
catch up with rest of UK though so am happy for people to think it’s a dump and stay away.

Woodhall Spa lovely (bit more expensive though), also like Wragby and Nettleham.

Reenskar · 17/07/2022 20:57

This is the sort of place within your budget in Woodhall Spa for example

I grew up in Lincolnshire. It's not really that bad if you don't compare it to other places. Quiet, off the beaten track, a bit old-fashioned, spread out. Lincoln is a lovely small city. It has views rather than countryside you can experience. Although as pp said the Wolds are pretty. There are hidden gems and of course a reasonable amount going on like anywhere, but you might find it flat and quiet after Devon (or in fact anywhere). Cheap for a reason.

I love the big sky and long straight roads and Cathedral on the horizon because it reminds me of home, but can't imagine moving back.

Not really sure where you go for both walking and sailing outside the SW?

OoglyMoogly · 17/07/2022 21:05

I'm in Lincolnshire and I love it. Essex born and bred, moved here 6 years ago.

Its quiet, peaceful, little crime. Most people are friendly, it's very old fashioned, village hall bingo nights or indoor (wooden) horse racing are usual entertainment (and well attended!) most village activities have a small card detailing the itinerary and the committee members (pretty much the same people whether it be gardening, ladies club or over 60s) we get a newsletter of village news monthly... it's a lovely step back.

If you've children you might wish to try one of the bigger towns. Skegness, by the way is lovely. Clean beaches, donkeys, more chip shops than you can shake a stick at - perfect.

whumpthereitis · 17/07/2022 21:16

Skegness is lovely?! Compared to what? Hiroshima circa August 1945?

I remember walking the beach and having to dodge used condoms and hypodermics. A veritable paradise.

😂😂😂

even the name is awful, sort of skanky sounding.

StrawberriesAndCreamPlease · 17/07/2022 22:09

Skegness is awful with the shallowest of shallow gene pool. It’s just a tragic place with doughnuts.

NotMeNoNo · 17/07/2022 22:37

Skegness is a fine Norse placename to be fair, it can't help its later associations.

don’t forget the chip shops and contingent of depressed donkeys.

I'm from Notts originally so know lincolnshire well- my view is cheap, simple , flagshagging and dull and I don't like the coast places either- but it is horses for courses and if you are happy with a nice house and a bit of dullness then it's fine. We all like different things and it's easy for people to say I prefer xxxx when budget may well come into it too.

Reenskar · 17/07/2022 23:10

😂Wonder when this was? 🤔 It’s a blue flag beach. It wouldn’t be top of my holiday list but for me it’s a short drive and for a day out with the kids it’s great- they love it (but then they haven’t learnt snobbery yet and only know how to have fun for the sake of it).

Gonnabegrandma · 17/07/2022 23:24

Lincolnshire is wonderful . We moved here 30 years ago and I wouldn’t move . Lots of nice places to live and varied lifestyles . Work out what your main needs are then start looking where suits them best

After a quick google I don’t think the passage of time has had much bearing, considering it’s once again been voted the worst seaside town of the UK.

My parents live in a beautiful house on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds and are selling up in the near future to move closer to me. I grew up in various villages around Lincoln and am happy to share local info and house info - please DM me if you like OP!

Have to say I agree - you just can’t beat the big sky. The sight of the cathedral on the drive over after being away for a long time due to covid moved me! I was so emotional to see home.

What about the lincs/Notts borders? Newark is lovely, there are lots of rivers for boating & several lakes or Lincoln itself, there is the lovely waterfront. Newark is a lovely market town, lots of independent shops & places to eat, next to the A1 so has good transport links & close to Nottingham.
