Moving to Lincolnshire

Apologies for AIBU thread, but thought it might attract more traffic. Live in Devon, work from home, DH retired and we would like to move. We want to clear the last of the mortgage and want a larger plot/outside space. Devon has gone mad with prices (yes I know ours has increased too) but everything is being snapped up before even going on the market or buyers are offering waaaay over asking/guide price. So I though well what about Lincolnshire? Is it a nice place to live?? We like walks, outdoors, sailing etc. I have heard so many conflicting opinions, that would thought I would try MN!! I am keen, DH not so much... Help!

In fact if you do a right move searchcwithin 10 miles of Dorchester under £450k there are many lovely ones that I could have posted— don’t go to Lincs— which as a Nottinghamshire girl originally I know really well— Lincoln itself is fine but in my personal view a lot of it is deadly dull, and not that nice and the coast is bloody horrible. you honestly have better options much closer to home and which will retain their value much better too. Another area to consider besides Pembrokeshire is East Sussex, places like Bexhill on Sea are within budget too

Louth is a lovely town & well located

upinaballoon · 25/01/2022 22:52

Keep away from Lincolnshire. People move in, thinking it's sweet country, cause house prices to rise because they can afford to pay more than the indigenous population, the councils have spent years giving permission for city-type character-less housing estates to be built and the people who come to them don't really want country living at all. They want the trappings they had in a city. You need to live in Lincolnshire for at least 60 years before you're half-accepted.
It certainly isn't all flat. The south of the county is flat. It isn't pretty countryside. It's utilitarian countryside, and the land needs to be used for food. The smallish towns in the south of the county were overwhelmed by the numbers of Eastern Europeans who flooded in 20-10 years ago, which was one of the reasons for the high Brexit votes. It's true about mud and tractors and getting stuck behind them on the roads.

@Putkettleonlove

We moved to North Lincs from the North East for job reasons. It was a shock to the system as initially I found it to be quite parochial and the people not as warm and welcoming as Geordies. However they are certainly better for knowing and after 14 years we feel more settled. The Wolds are beautiful and for my city fix I can get to Hull (slowly on the up) and Lincoln. Leeds, Manchester and London are easily accessible by train.
Lincolnshire possibly an upgrade from ne but definitely a downgrade from sw

Plus you can’t get IPA in pubs-10 years behind any trend

But when we have Batemans, we don't need other, inferior beers!

Agreed! I could have done with a pint of XB tonight!

AdoptedBumpkin · 26/01/2022 00:10

I have been to Lincs a few times over the years. Skeg has an oddly aggressive vibe and Grantham seemed a bit strange. Not super helpful I know!

whumpthereitis · 26/01/2022 01:21

Lived there for a few years and got out as soon as humanly possible. I would recommend M̶o̶r̶d̶o̶r̶ Norfolk over Lincolnshire.

halloweenie13 · 26/01/2022 01:34

The negative comments on here are evidently from people who have either never been to Lincolnshire or cannot afford the dinners on their table let alone a house there. I have lived in 4 different counties and Lincolnshire is by far the best! Loads to do and see especially in terms of heritage, affordable housing, pace of life is more chilled out than some other areas, pleasant neighbours, coast nearby and great events like the christmas market and racecourse events. I'm in my mid 20's and would stay here permanently now, nowhere compares.

You have to be joking norfolk is a complete dump, zero opportunities and caravan sites galore.

Nottinghamshire is riddled with knife crime and violence with poor housing prices and even less in terms of progression, please don't make comments on lincolnshire that are inaccurate, ignorant and uneducated.
Horsemad · 26/01/2022 01:38

I do live here & would still suggest OP stays put!

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 26/01/2022 02:04

I used to live in North Lincs. The first places that come to mind would be the “by” villages outside Market Rasen/Caistor -
Tealby, Walesby etc

mjf981 · 26/01/2022 02:06

Pros - cheaper, less rain
Cons -generally flat, considered a bit 'backwards' in parts, chavvy seaside towns

I wouldn't do it. Probably best to book a week or two of holiday and go explore the county to form your own view.

claretblue79 · 26/01/2022 02:15

Op, lots to love about Lincolnshire. It might not be to everyone’s taste but I live in Scunthorpe and love it here. Good theatre and entertainment venue and lots of green spaces either in the town or nearby. Lincoln is a great compact city which has benefited a lot from the university in my opinion. Cleethorpes has a nice beach and quite a few independent shops as well. I know lots of lovely and unpretentious people here and I would never move.

whumpthereitis · 26/01/2022 02:30

I’ve lived in both (live in neither now, incidentally) and I would absolutely recommend it over Lincolnshire.

CakeAmbusher · 26/01/2022 02:39

Are you crazy? PLEASE don’t move to Lincolnshire. It’s the most backwards place, insular, not at all diverse, loads of racists, transport links are rubbish. Property is cheap for a reason. Sorry, I just can’t stand the place.

Louth is nice but w "Well located" is s massive stretch unless you want to go to Grimsby
DoctorSnortles · 26/01/2022 06:35

I live in Lincs. It’s not all flat and some of it is quite pretty, but it is a working landscape - I was amazed when I moved here how busy it is, with tractors, farm machinery, gangs of people with guns and spaniels, huge milk tankers hurtling down narrow lanes and the oceans of mud. I rather like it, though. There are big skies, lovely walks, interesting wildlife and, in between noisy bursts of farming activity, peace and quiet. I also love plane watching - we get interesting aircraft zooming about, like Spitfires and the Lancaster bomber. And sometimes the Red Arrows go screaming past.

You’ve just got to sort yourself out for cultural stuff - get on the train to London as much as possible and be prepared to not be liked by the locals or find some of them somewhat Brexity.

Howeverdoyouneedme · 26/01/2022 07:08

Grew up in South Lincs, so lived there until early 20s and my family still live there.

I don’t know how to say this without being blunt, but I really don’t like Lincolnshire, I’m not talking about North Lincolnshire, I don’t know anything about it, but South Lincolnshire and the Fens. Growing up there was pretty dull and I know people often say that about their adolescence, but truly. You’re not near a decent city by public transport (Peterborough). Ok, you can get to London from there, but it’s hardly a quick pop. It’s conservative, lacking in diversity and grey. If my family didn’t live there I honestly wouldn’t return.

wsbts · 26/01/2022 07:17

We have moved many times and used to live in Devon. We have lived in the south east coast of England for the last 4 years. Late last year we contemplated a move to Lincs near Spalding with the intention of being able to free up equity. In our price range up £350K the choice of properties was very limited to a handful and what we chose to put offers on upon receiving surveyors reports were in a state. There was nothing that you could move in without spending a great deal on renovations that should have taken place years ago. We had similar issues with the lack of natural gas and connected drainage not being available at certain properties.
We gave up in the end being out of pocket with surveyors and legal costs!

I moved from Barton nearly 4 years ago and am so pleased we got out when we did. Some of the villages near by are nice though.

Perfectlystill · 26/01/2022 07:37

I lived in Devon and hated it.

The Lincolnshire Wolds are lovely, ditto Stamford and surrounds. The rest is gloomy.

Horsemad · 26/01/2022 11:55

Overall I think the north Norfolk coast is prettier than Lincs but it gets very busy in the summer.
