Moving to Lincolnshire

colderandeatsmincepiesalot · 25/01/2022 15:13

Apologies for AIBU thread, but thought it might attract more traffic. Live in Devon, work from home, DH retired and we would like to move. We want to clear the last of the mortgage and want a larger plot/outside space. Devon has gone mad with prices (yes I know ours has increased too) but everything is being snapped up before even going on the market or buyers are offering waaaay over asking/guide price. So I though well what about Lincolnshire? Is it a nice place to live?? We like walks, outdoors, sailing etc. I have heard so many conflicting opinions, that would thought I would try MN!! I am keen, DH not so much... Help!

I used to live in Lincoln, I loved it. I lived in the city and on the outskirts, several of the villages near to Lincoln are quite nice, Nettleham is lovely as is Cherry Willingham

Ceebeegee · 26/01/2022 12:26

I agree with the previous posters, be careful where in Lincolnshire. Some of the roads are a nightmare (single lane but busy roads, stuck behind HGVs and tractors for miles and miles and miles), it's bleak, flat , uninspiring. Even Lincoln city doesnt feel like it 'belongs', it's in the middle of nowhere, takes ages to get to anything and has only relatively recently had a direct train link to London.
Like a pp, try nearer the Rutland end of the Midlands.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 26/01/2022 12:54

How about the south coast. Lots of sailing, South Downs for walking, small towns and villages and transport links if you need them.

Wisper1 · 26/01/2022 13:33

Lincolnshire is a really nice county.
However it is being ruined by Chavs from down south moving here thinking they can get twice the property for half the price whilst at the same time thinking they own the place.

colderandeatsmincepiesalot · 26/01/2022 15:13

@Wisper1
Well luckily we want a smaller house than we have here - so that's ok?? Not sure if we are 'chavs' though!! Grin

Lincolnshire is the very definition of chav, if you’re throwing insults.

Define ‘Own The Place’. While you’re at it do you want some vinegar for that chip?

CakeAmbusher · 26/01/2022 16:42

I implore anyone thinking of moving here to read The Lincolnite online - and I rest my case.

‘It’s being ruined by Chavs moving from down south’

Have you not met the locals? The natives of Boston alone negate that one, nevermind the rest of Chernobyl on the fens.

Phos · 26/01/2022 17:05

My auntie and cousins live in Spalding. If we didn’t have commitments here, id move there in a heartbeat. It’s a lovely town, has really good schools, you’re close to nice countryside and to Peterborough with transport links to London. Also you get a lot of property for your money!

Horst · 26/01/2022 17:17

The chavs from down south? I take it you’ve not heard the fish chips and donkey rides song based on its own locals.

Why is this house so cheap?

HeddaGarbled · 27/01/2022 00:42

Spalding: drunks in the town centre in daytime
Peterborough: a lot of closed shops and those that are left, lean to the cheap
North Norfolk coast: lovely, inaccessible, stratospheric house prices
Rutland Water and Oakham: nice

Some comments based on my own experience to counter-balance some other comments above.

I would imagine because it’s located in one of the most deprived areas of the county, East Lindsey:

floatinginmyhomie · 27/01/2022 00:44

I went to the uni a few years back, the city is nice to live as long as you’re up the hill. It is a beautiful place though, especially the cathedral. We lived in one of the ‘bad’ areas but honestly it was still fine, we’d have lots of walks down the canal and nights out are good. It’s nothing incredible though but I don’t think it’s awful.

nocoolnamesleft · 27/01/2022 01:44

Driving towards Lincoln at sunset, as the light hits the cathedral on the crest of the hill, is truly stunning.

spanieleyes · 27/01/2022 06:30

@Lunificent

And yet it is between Woodhall Spa, Horncastle and Spilsby, which are all decent places to live ( Woodhall Spa is considered quite posh!) in a lovely old village.
However it is quite isolated from transport links, the houses nearer the A1 and Peterborough to London line tend to be more expensive as a large number of people commute from Lincolnshire to London daily.

Horsemad · 27/01/2022 09:51

@Lunificent that is indeed a lovely village, very rural, think there's a pub there but no shop.

It's not far from the A16 but you're still miles away from any decent shops, etc.

Sorry I shouldn’t laugh but it is a bloody awful place. Every time I had to go there I feel inexplicably ill and couldn’t wait to escape.

HI.I would love some advice on moving to Lincolnshire also. I have just sold my property in London and looking to move to a nice area with good schools. I have 3 girls ,my eldest has quadriplegic cerebral palsy so will require a special school. We have visited nettleham and I have seen property (must be a bungalow) in welton with good school's. We are both self employed so can be flexible but I have to consider transport for my eldest daughter and the catchment area. Being a city girl I'd love to be close to some amenities such as a coffee shops and a gym, don't mind to drive about 30 mins. My younger children(6 months and 2 yrs) swim 3 times a week and id like this to continue.Id also like them to start ballet and tennis lessons as soon as they are old enough Any advice on other location's you can recommend would be greatly appreciated. My budget is £550 -£600,000.Must be in a safe area with low crime rate and good schools. Thanks.x

colderandeatsmincepiesalot · 25/01/2022 21:59

thank you so much for all of this....some great advice. We did actually go to Pembrokeshire for a week early Jan to see if we could envisage ourselves living there, but it was still Devon for us. We have a lot of thinking to do....

If you think Pembrokeshire doesn't compare to Devon then Lincolnshire really really won't. I think you will regret it if you
Love to Lincolnshire tbh

Howeverdoyouneedme · 14/07/2022 15:50

Savykeane. You would get more replies if you started a new thread.

But Bourne in SW Lincolnshire has a special school and a grammar school system.

It has an indoor pool and a lido.

Tennis club.

There a fair few bungalows.

Would also look at Grantham and surrounding villages

Grantham has a fantastic tennis club - voted club of the year by the LTA, Also has grammar schools, good dance schools,2 Sen schools - Ambergate and Sandon - part of a large trust of Sen schools

Train to London in 65 mins

Eaumyword · 15/07/2022 22:47

Long Bennington is a fab large village - coffee shop, hairdresser, co-op, drs, pub and regular buses to Newark&Grantham. In catchment for grammars, has a good primary school.
Also 10min from Newark, which also has SEN schools and lots of activities. Both Newark and Grantham have big leisure centres.
Also look at Bottesford and surrounding villages 👍
