Moving to Lincolnshire

Apologies for AIBU thread, but thought it might attract more traffic. Live in Devon, work from home, DH retired and we would like to move. We want to clear the last of the mortgage and want a larger plot/outside space. Devon has gone mad with prices (yes I know ours has increased too) but everything is being snapped up before even going on the market or buyers are offering waaaay over asking/guide price. So I though well what about Lincolnshire? Is it a nice place to live?? We like walks, outdoors, sailing etc. I have heard so many conflicting opinions, that would thought I would try MN!! I am keen, DH not so much... Help!

I've grew up in North Lincs, have lived in Devon and now live on the edge of the Peak District. I'd not move back to Lincolnshire unless there was a job or something that meant it was sensible. There's plenty of nice places but not anything that would draw me to move there without good reason. Where I am now is much nicer for walks imo ,unless walking arable fields is your thing

Blossomtoes · 25/01/2022 16:22

This is probably further west than you were thinking. It’s a lovely area.

Parts of Lincs are lovely, but watch out for flood plains.

TheFoldOx · 25/01/2022 16:31
@TheFoldOx looking to spend max £475, detached if poss. min 3 beds, fair sized garden and garage if poss. Love character properties. Don't mind very rural, not middle of city. Is that doable?
That sounds reasonable for much of Lincs. For example, about 10 miles south of Lincoln, Leadenham is a very pleasant village, some facilities and an hourly bus into Lincoln if you'd rather not drive, www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/80232588#/map?channel=RES_BUY. On at £500,000 but I suspect negotiable, in Sudbrook, which a small, quiet village, well placed for the rail service from Grantham to London, www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/82663446#/?channel=RES_BUY.

funnelfanjo · 25/01/2022 16:32

It's not the most diverse place in the UK shall we say, and you will encounter attitudes that reflect this in places. But your money will go a long way when buying property. It depends what is most important to you.

There's plenty of holiday properties, suggest you spend some time in the county to get a feel for it?

VaulterTech · 25/01/2022 16:35

Stamford is lovely, fab town, nice walks, close to Rutland water for water sports etc. the coast though is a good 90mins away and is nowhere near as nice as Devon.

Horst · 25/01/2022 16:43

I agree with Rutland being a good place to be near Stamford is close enough to Peterborough city for the city centre and the trains direct to London if you wanted that too.

sunshinesupermum · 25/01/2022 16:45

Is it just price that is your reason for moving from Devon OP? Surely Norfolk would be nicer than Lincolnshire?

Lipsandlashes · 25/01/2022 16:45

South Lincolnshire, Stamford and the surrounding villages, are beautiful but be aware that the house prices around there have also increased dramatically and will be ££££ for something lovely and picturesque.

Horst · 25/01/2022 16:47

This is nice in Stamford good size and good sized garden. You obviously could get much more for your money in other areas though as well.

countrygirl99 · 25/01/2022 16:51

Stamford is lovely but definitely more expensive than the rest of the county. Louth is nice and on the edge of the wolds but along way from anywhere. The fen bits are, well, fen and very marmite. Don't know the coast and it's decades since I went to Lincoln which seemed quite nice in the centre.

Blossomtoes · 25/01/2022 16:53

That’s lovely.

Lillylikely · 25/01/2022 17:10

Avoid Sleaford, Boston etc....some areas are very run down and can be very very right wing! It's not very diverse. Lincoln in the centre is nice and Louth is supposed to be nice.

Horst · 25/01/2022 17:13

Always avoid driving though Boston too. God that is a nightmare on the main though.

Some nice properties along the wainfleet ole leaky ways though no idea what the area is like for living though just in driving though.

PenCreed · 25/01/2022 17:17

Why avoid Boston like the plague? I've never been, but have a friend from there so am intrigued.

Horst · 25/01/2022 17:21

I find it’s just always too busy. You can very quickly like in many places go from nice big houses to destitute areas. And they got read of bogies bar now that was a landmark as a child going to the seaside and shouting bogies!!! Grin

MrsWooster · 25/01/2022 17:26

Was on ‘escape to the country’ yesterday!

TheHoptimist · 25/01/2022 17:30

Devon is not the most forward thinking place but Lincolnshire is prehistoric

Lillylikely · 25/01/2022 17:31

Have you thought about Gloucestershire, very pretty, lakes for sailing (old gravel pits, some are massive) maybe around South Cerney, Lechlade or Cirencester. Train from Kemble into London. Near to your son in Oxfordshire.

Spiderysummer · 25/01/2022 17:31

Agree with others that some of the villages near Stamford would good. Louth is lovely too. I've been to Boston and it is best avoided.

TheHoptimist · 25/01/2022 17:31

Weather is rubbish as well
What about rural Kent? Rural Cambridgeshire?

WorstXmasEver · 25/01/2022 17:37

I'm in central Lincoln.

Nice place. Safe. Traffic is bad but the council are always trying to improve this.

Central Lincoln undergoing a lot of regeneration & investment.

For fans of walking it would be good. Not sure about sailing but there's boating lakes & clubs as well as good canal routes.

You might be bored in a small lincolnshire village though.

There's very little community spirit though because of the amount of immigration here.

GrannyBattleaxe · 25/01/2022 17:38

You want The Wolds. Horncastle/Louth/Spilsby maybe Chapel,

Horst · 25/01/2022 17:41

Chapel is quite touristy though. Those that don’t quite want want skeggy and ingoldmells tend to go there so there’s all the caravan parks and added visitors during any day of nice weather.

Eaumyword · 25/01/2022 17:58

I'm Lincs, close to the Notts/Leics borders and near the the Vale of Belvoir.
It's rurally pretty, with lovely villages and pubs.
Lots of good grammar schools nearby.
Still a few character cottages around with land and heaps of potential for not insane prices - we got a corker!
I love it.
