What rights do trans people not have?

What worries me is the terrible misogyny women and girls face - it shows no signs of improving.

Climate change worries me hugely too.

Teddybar · 22/01/2022 14:42

I'm guessing by trans rights you mean men insisting on unfettered access to womens spaces under the guise of being trans and the cancel culture around people speaking biological reality rather than the rights of trans people many whom are keen on 3rd spaces and accept biological reality but don't have such big mouths?

Really trans activists as they are currently are borne out of western privilege. Women around the world in many places are still seen as inferior and treated appallingly, everyone is more than aware that no one can opt out of biology. Therefore I'd say equality of women across the globe and here is the bigger issue, if people understood that they would not support such ridiculous views.

The world's always been a bit shit though, it seems worse now as we have been fortunate to have a period of relative calm in the west. My advice? Do what you can, but log off, get outside and try and focus on stuff you can control.

haba · 22/01/2022 14:42

I think my biggest concern is the absolute shambles the UK has become. It's the appalling mismanagement of everything, the selfishness, greed, backbiting, levelling down in every area of society.

There don't seem to be any political parties competent enough to run a tombola, let alone a city/county council or a country. Angry

But on the bright side, climate change will sort all that out after several billion of us have died, in nasty, horrendous, drawn out ways
The earth will survive, but she certainly doesn't need us.

Teddybar · 22/01/2022 14:44

Also many living in poverty don't have energy to sit online and worry themselves about stuff, getting through the day is hard enough, so it depends who you ask I suppose. Poverty is a huge issue that's only going to get worse.

WorstXmasEver · 22/01/2022 14:49

Cost of living is the only thing that bothers me.

WorstXmasEver · 22/01/2022 14:51

Trans rights shouldn't exist really. It's a made up issue.

Sonex · 22/01/2022 14:55

Women's Rights
Males forcing their way into female spaces
Climate change
Child abuse
Global poverty
The next viral pandemic and lack of education around vaccinations

Trans isn't a thing. If someone wants to present as a stereotypical man or woman, no one is stopping them. There are no rights anyone else has that they don't. Just don't pretend you have or can change sex and keep sex segregated spaces in place where it's necessary (prisons, sports, rape shelters, chnaging rooms).

EmpressSuiko · 22/01/2022 14:57

My main concern right now is the housing crisis and rise in the cost of living.
We like many other families are facing homelessness and there’s no social housing, no rentals and no way of buying a home.

Dontgetyerknicksinatwist · 22/01/2022 14:59

Rising poverty is a real threat to our society. I fear for the children who will be caught up in it. I worry that people, especially children will go hungry, cold, homeless and even die as a result. Our Government are wilfully allowing this to happen. Where is the social uprising against this? People are willing enough to protest over a statue fgs…

goodwinter · 22/01/2022 15:25

@Beamur

I think that sexual equality is actually the most important one. Because if decisions were not being made solely by men, I think issues around poverty and climate change would be looked at differently.
Totally, totally disagree. Think of some of the most famous or powerful female politicians: Hillary Clinton, Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May, Kamala Harris. None of these people are doing or have done any more than men to genuinely address poverty and inequality.

To me, making sure people are able to access housing, food, heating, and other essentials is absolutely paramount. This applies to every single person. For this we must address rising inequality and poverty and climate change as well as we look to the future.

And frankly I think looking at sex equality through the lens of ratios of powerful people is useless. Let's say we have 50% female CEOs. Great. How does that do anything for low-paid, low-status women?

Ellowyn · 22/01/2022 15:26

Can someone please explain the lack of 'women's rights' to me - as it stands now in 2022 - pertaining to the UK/US.

I grew up in the 50's and 60's. In the 70's I couldn't take out a credit card in just my name. I did the same work, side by side with men but they got paid almost twice as much as me. I asked my employer why and I was told women are not head of the household. I was a divorced mother at the time with no support. I fought for equal pay for everyone at that company through the union and, although I won, I lost my job. The way men were allowed to treat me at work was horrendous. I worked both in the UK and the US and both were the same. I could go on and on.

I thought women had equal rights now. I started a (manufacturing) business in 1990 and nothing, no one, held me back from doing that.

I'm not trying to start an argument I just want to hear what's going on these days for women.

That said, the thing that worries me is the pollution, waste, over-population and the out of control crime in US cities.

You are right in a sense @Ellowyn that, in the west at least, women have the same rights as men. Gay people have the same rights as straight people, people of colour have the same rights as white people and trans people have the same rights as everyone else too. It's a maybe quite lazy shorthand.

But on the ground these 'rights' haven't delivered equality. Women have and continue to suffer disproportionately from the impacts of poverty, sex-based violence, etc etc. On every measure women do worse than men, apart from in education. We may have equal rights, but we don't have equal outcomes.

sst1234 · 22/01/2022 16:20

OP is trying in a thinly veiled way to wind people up here. Is is quiet under the bridge tonight OP? Trans rights?

SilverDragonfly1 · 22/01/2022 16:27

@Luredbyapomegranate

It’s a shit time.

But anyone who answers anything other than climate change is batshit.

There you go- I think anyone who doesn't put poverty over other issues is batshit. And it's very obvious that some people think supporting trans rights is batshit. I suppose that's why the tories keep getting in- votes being split over various smaller parties depending on what flavour of batshit people are.
slashlover · 22/01/2022 16:32

Transwomen are not women - die in a grease fire, lose your job, look to your kids

TBF, I said on twitter that TWAW and was told that as I was advocating for the rape of women then I deserved to be raped and murdered.

rainbowdaz · 22/01/2022 16:38

Could equally say the same about people in other countries. Their issues are more important than ours. Poverty in Africa and Asia is more severe, anyone who prioritises the U.K. first is batshit

It's not necessarily about prioritising. Could also be said people only care about poverty (in the UK) because it affects them so not from a true place of altruism

Poverty is definitely important though. Not like anyone crossed it off, just people worry about different things

Thelnebriati · 22/01/2022 16:44
  • Misogyny. There are currently two powerful political movements working in tandem to create a culture that demeans and denigrates women.
  • The dismantling of the social safety net - housing, benefits, the NHS.
  • Rising inequality and poverty, which ultimately will create even more of a destabilising effect and make us less able to cope with or tackle climate change.
  • Lack of investment in farming in the UK. We need to be as self sufficient in food as we possibly can and the Govt has done nothing to facilitate this.
  • Lack of investment in energy infrastructure. Again, we need to be self sufficient in energy, and look at how we create it and how we reduce our consumption.
BeyondMyWits · 22/01/2022 16:51

Poverty is top issue for me.

Poverty affects women more disproportionately.

Poverty stops real moves on climate change too... I'll keep my crappy petrol car as affording an electric one, a charging station and the electric to run it is just a pipedream.
Poverty means less likely to be able to work from home, poverty affects all sorts of these issues.

The forthcoming war between Russia and Ukraine is a worry too. Whose side will we be on when the gas pipelines to Europe get turned off? (Again...)

rainbowdaz · 22/01/2022 17:00

Poverty and climate are also linked so let's not forget. Coastal cities with high slum populations like Lagos are going to be disproportionately affected, and that's without other environmental issues they face

Beamur · 22/01/2022 18:50

goodwinter
I can't argue with that or disagree. I guess my imagined utopia is a bit more like the examples of Iceland/Scandinavia where women are more widespread in Government and influential positions. Which has had impact on the issues that affect women and families.
I'm not sure that Margaret Thatcher or Teresa May are exactly feminists...

That's the kind of inability to accept differing views I was talking about. Doesn't matter what the person saying such shit believes or is defending, it's the same intransigent solipsism, usually dressed up with some virtue signalling flummery.
SleepingDoglets · 23/01/2022 09:22

It’s all part of the same problem surely?

Patriarchal societies ignoring the needs of the sick, the vulnerable, the poor.
Pushing their own agenda for greed, for their wealthy friends.
The women who have been in charge have had to fight for their places within this system. It would be interesting to see how things would be with a truly egalitarian based ethos, without the constant willy-waving and competing that we currently have that consistently leaves women behind.

ParsleySageRosemary · 23/01/2022 09:31

All of the above and chuck in the diminished capacity for self-reliance in the U.K. This country has almost 20 million more inhabitants than when I was born and has recently pissed off its closest suppliers of food. It’s environment is badly degraded and resources are poorly distributed on top.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 23/01/2022 09:33

Climate Change.

Worrying about anythings else is like worrying about the wrong choice of wallpaper when your house is burning.
