Want to get away, alone. I have 5 days AL going spare. Has to be in the UK, as a lone female I need to feel safe.

Any ideas ?

What would be your perfect week away? What sort of things would you do ?

This thread makes me happy.

My vote is for the mighty SHEFFIELD.

Green and leafy city, cheap to stay, easy to travel to, lots of random things to do “in the city” if you want to hit the shops or galleries, and there’s some absolutely outstanding walks on the outskirts and even inside the city (if you want to get a quick train out to Peak District for hardcore hiking you can, if you want more of a 3 hours somewhere pretty with a cafe at the end that’s also doable)

So you can mix up amazing walks and cultured stuff.

For me it would be London. I would get an apartment though and probably stay in at night.

NumberTheory · 20/01/2022 06:28

I would look for ideal accommodation rather than ideal location. For a break by myself I want a hotel or apartment with a slightly grand but well maintained feel, a spa with a pool in the hotel or close by, nice grounds if not in a city. I could easily spend a week holed up by myself in a nice room, reading, watching movies and consuming good food and drink. Venturing out only to have a brief wander and a massage.

God, I’m already jealous Grin

@Stealhsquirrelnutkin

I'd book one of the Redcliffe apartments, right by the sea on Caswell Bay on the Gower.
I have an unfathomable love for Victoria Dock in Caernarfon …

London. Watch some shows, afternoon tea in the ritz, shopping in Harrods, evenings mooching around the city. Perfect

sandgrown · 20/01/2022 06:51

Go to Yorkshire and the can go to cities like Leeds and York or historical sites like the Piece Hall in Halifax and Saltaire near Bradford . You could go walking at any number of places like Hardcastle Crags or visit quirky towns like Hebden Bridge. Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay are lovely if you want to go to the sea.

LiterallyKnowsBest · 20/01/2022 06:57

I’m completely the opposite, NumberTheory - for me it’s all about the location. I can appreciate that for people with hectic domestic / work lives being holed up by myself in a nice room, reading, watching movies and consuming good food and drink would be attractive, but that’s exactly what I do at home so I wouldn’t travel for it.

Times I’ve ‘treated’ myself to grand hotels always leave me feeling foolish and resentful at the waste of money. I have zero interest in hotel pools and spas either. Give me a Premier Inn and world class galleries, theatre, architecture with a breathtaking landscape a few feet away …

Walk the Pembrokeshire coast path (some of it). I did 4 days last July and it was glorious. I stopped to swim too most days.

The train’s a bit of a faf but well worth it for a week.

Iguessyourestuckwithme · 20/01/2022 07:10

I've done :

London
York
Bath
Bristol
Winchester
Shrewsbury
Coventry
Birmingham
Oxford
Stratford upon Avon
Royal Leamington Spa
Liverpool
Chester
Colchester
Manchester
Salisbury
New forest
Brighton
Canterbury

as a solo traveller which I recommend

Just decided im going to go to Norwich and Cromer this weekend on the train.

I would go to the Cotswolds. Had a lovely week there at the end of the summer. Boughton on Water and Broadway were lovely to walk around and I would think this time of the year would be less touristy. I also loved The Slaughters, it was like stepping back in time. We stayed in Stow on the Wold which was nice and central although we were in a cottage and not a hotel.

NoHeavenNoMore · 20/01/2022 07:38

Definitely Anglesey. Favourite place in the world ❤️

Acupofteaandabook · 20/01/2022 07:42

Haworth
Lake District - there are some lovely hotels with indoor pools, lake views, and walk/immediate bus to various towns and hikes
St. Ives
Watergate Bay
Exeter & surrounding areas
New Forest
Bath

Iamnotamermaid · 20/01/2022 07:59

Orkney is lovely. Locals are very friendly and fantastic scenery. Can be dark and windy at this time of year.
Cornwall or Devon - seaside retreat.

crazyjinglist · 20/01/2022 08:04

I'd go to a not too big city - Bath, York, somewhere like that. I live fairly rurally though, so I would be looking for something different (but not London, as I lived there for years).

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 20/01/2022 08:22

5 days alone sounds like heaven to me op!
Have a great time wherever you go x

TurtleBackUp · 20/01/2022 10:44

Thank you all so much for your responses!

A lot of ideas, I've already done - including the NC500 and most of Scotland and have travelled pretty extensively in the UK.

But I've never been to Bath so at the moment I'm thinking of going there. I'll spend lots of time in the room but also having a wander and eating out - will do a spa day too.

Been interesting reading about everyone's ideals too, so thank you.
