AIBU to assume Boris Johnson is lying?

Cummings says that he warned Boris the drinks party was against the covid rules.

Boris says he didn’t. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-60039868

So, given the track record, AIBU to assume that BJ is either
(A) lying to Parliament, or
(B) so bad at his job that he has no idea what his private secretary is up to, or what the rules he created actually said, or what the difference is between working and having a drinks party.

If Boris was confident that he had been entirely honest in all of his statements to parliament, then surely he could have given a straight "yes" when Beth Rigby asked him if he would resign if he was found to have lied. He would have had nothing to fear.

Instead, we got a mealy-mouthed answer about waiting for Sue Gray to conclude her investigation. Surely our prime minister doesn't need a civil servant to tell him a)whether he has lied to parliament and b)his personal view on the principle that a prime minister who is found to have lied to parliament should resign.

He dodged the question, which clearly reflects the fact that he is scared of getting caught out.

soberdovered · 18/01/2022 15:25

I don’t think Boris knows what the truth is, or can remember.

Someone mentioned Thatcher. As a life long Labour supporter I would love to have Thatch now instead of Boris.

Even Theresa May now looks a good choice.

As for Tony Blair as a war criminal, this would have more legs if anyone honestly thought the Tories would have done anything differently!

SirChenjins · 18/01/2022 15:26

He seems awfully keen to wait for Sue Gray’s report —to completely exonerate him—. Very strange.

AlexaShutUp · 18/01/2022 15:26

I don’t think Boris knows what the truth is, or can remember.

I wondered about this.

girlmom21 · 18/01/2022 15:27

I don’t think Boris knows what the truth is, or can remember.

This is true. You can often see him actively trying to remember what lies he's told. It's impossible to keep track of all of them. That's how he gets caught out.

Yep. A proper web of deceit. This time, he might get caught in it.
ilovesooty · 18/01/2022 15:28

@Tallyhodavey

This isn’t anything new. Tony Blair should have been indicted for war crimes IMHO. They are all liars.
Completely irrelevant.
EIIa · 18/01/2022 15:29

Hmmm I suspect Cummings just gave him
Enough rope to hang himself

Im sure he didn’t warn him! I wouldn’t have!

That's Sir Tony Blair to you.
DGRossetti · 18/01/2022 15:30

While I agree there is a special place in hell for Tony Blair - who went on TV and lied to the nation to take us into a war that our great grandchildren will be dying for - it's fair to say that's happened and gone.

Boris Johnson is still in power. And this is where we should do now what we failed to do with Blair, and remove him as quickly as possible. It's not as if he actually does anything anyway. Apart from enable mediocrity and cronyism.

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 18/01/2022 15:33

@noblegiraffe

Are his lips moving?

Then he’s lying.

What I was going to say!
DGRossetti · 18/01/2022 15:33

That's Sir Tony Blair to you.

It's unlikely to happen, but fuck that for a game of soldiers (and I apologise to the families of the fallen for that phrase, but it was needed to remind some of us why I say that).

It's Mr. Blair. thank you very much.

whiteworldgettingwhiter · 18/01/2022 15:34

Well, they're both liars, so who to believe??

It's already happened
BashStreetKid · 18/01/2022 15:36

Of course he's lying. There's no way a social event was organised on his lawn without checking with him.

Reallycantbesarsed · 18/01/2022 15:37

@Lottapianos

'I don’t think Cummings is the most honest of people either to be fair'

Absolutely. This is the sewer we find ourselves swimming in - having to choose which self-serving sack of shit to believe. Good times

Agree ….this is how toxic this government is …which liar is not lying 🤥 Bloody shocking!!
LulaLulaloo · 18/01/2022 15:42

I would to ask him directly “are you not intelligent enough to understand the guidance yourself or is it that you don’t think it applies to you? The lack of intelligence would suggest you aren’t smart enough to run the country, the lack of morals suggests the same”

DGRossetti · 18/01/2022 15:43

It's already happened

Not in the Rossetti household, I will have you know. You call him what you like. I'd go to jail before I called him sir. That's probably the most offensive pronoun I can think of.

(Goes off to check posting for accuracy and discovers that "Mr" is classed as a noun ? With such a feeling for accuracy you can tell I'm not a shill ... ).

BashStreetKid · 18/01/2022 15:45

No, he's a Sir. The Knighthood took effect from the time he was appointed. Look up people like Sir Christopher Whitty if you don't believe it.
TokyoSushi · 18/01/2022 15:47

I don't think he really had any clue what is going on anymore. The lies and deceit have become so enormous that I really don't think he has a clue which way is up.

I don't think it'll be long until he goes now, things seem to have shifted even further in that direction since his lunchtime interview. It looks like even he knows that the game is up, it's just a case of when & how.

52andblue · 18/01/2022 15:48

There is no honour amongst thieves, but, yes, Johnson is lying.
If he is breathiing, he is lying.

The option isn't good the other way either:
He is either lying, therefore unfit,
Or think as mince, therefore unfit.

BashStreetKid · 18/01/2022 15:48

I find it quite bizarre that Johnson and the police are allegedly waiting for Sue Gray to tell them whether he broke the law. She's neither a police officer nor a lawyer, so the person who made the law and people trained to know and enforce the law really shouldn't need her help.

DGRossetti · 18/01/2022 15:54

No, he's a Sir. The Knighthood took effect from the time he was appointed.

I dare you, I double-dare you, to make me call him "sir" Grin

sadpapercourtesan · 18/01/2022 15:56

Nothing could compel me to refer to TB as "Sir" either. I don't call anybody Sir, as it happens, but he would be the last person I'd make an exception for.

Lovely whataboutery to have dragged him onto this thread, though.

They're not - they're waiting for Sue Gray to confirm to them (after they've guided her in the right direction...) that he did nothing wrong.
