Total first world problems I realise. Have attached pics. Gah, I hate it! I don’t know exactly what I’m asking but aibu, and if not what should I do!

It’s not central and in all the pics you’ve put of other options they are. Is there a reason it was laid to the left? I want to like it but like you OP I just don’t. Maybe it’s the brown. No helpful advise as per usual when I respond to these things. I’m terrible at visualising and decorating.

1forAll74 · 17/01/2022 19:06

I like it, but if you think it's too dark, you could paint the bannisters and rail in a lighter colour, to brighten up the whole look of the staircase, then you wouldn't concentrate on the carpet alone. And maybe some art work on the wall, will take your mind off the carpet.. I certainly would not chuck new carpet away, you kind of get used to some things after a while.

wooo69 · 17/01/2022 19:44

Would love to post other rooms but worried it’s too outing!!

Are you in the place in your name?
That is where I am from and not moved far

dibly · 17/01/2022 19:47

I like it, get some pics up and plants and it will look far less stark.

Fluffmum · 17/01/2022 20:02

It looks lovely

maybloss2 · 17/01/2022 20:02

I go with the suggestion of plants and also artwork on the wall up the stairs, then you’ll stop looking at the carpet! I don’t think it’s awful btw.

pinkpirlie · 17/01/2022 20:04

I have the same issue with our stairs. It came out too brown once the whole piece was down, as opposed to a single sample.
I've lived with it three years, because it's just too expensive to fix. I only go up and down the stairs a few times a day, so don't think about it often, but almost every time I go on the stairs I'm "ergh".

mumjustmum · 17/01/2022 20:04

I'd be putting a few family photos in black frames on the stairs walls, it will then suit a lot better. The carpet looks good with the bannisters, but the walls are too plain for the dark colour

Pigeontoed · 17/01/2022 20:14

I haven't read all.posts, but I would advise just living with it for a while. A couple of years ago we paud thousands to recarpet our entire 3 storey house after several weeks careful thought on the carpet. I came home after fitting and HATED it, think inconsolable sobbing. Lived with it, and quite quickly grew to love it. Wouldn't change it now. Give it a chance!

gypsy22 · 17/01/2022 20:18

It's the white Paintwork - so bright white it's intensifying the brown. Look at a different shade of white - look at farrow ball for inspiration re what colours complement the brown . Greyed off whites basically

exaltedwombat · 17/01/2022 20:21

It's fine. Get on with your life.

BitterestPill · 17/01/2022 20:30

I really like it.
It looks like tweed, beautiful

Scubadivinginabox · 17/01/2022 20:30

I can see why you hate it... sorry. You've got black bannisters and white stairs so a soft grey would look lovely. Brown isn't in the same tone..! If you can afford it, I would start again.

Bumblebeefriend · 17/01/2022 20:34

I like it. Can you place a couple of plants and pictures as suggested on it then take some more photos and post to see opinions then?

Flingingmelon · 17/01/2022 20:35

I think the carpet is fine. The whole area just needs dressing. Once you've got curtains, pictures, plants etc it will look just fine.

It's neutral so it was never intended to be a show stopper?

Love the bannisters and spindles too

bluebeach · 17/01/2022 20:41

Agree too much brown and black. Can the banister go white?

ilkleymoorbartat · 17/01/2022 20:44

Yes! @wooo69

It looks hard wearing. Not sure the white will wear to well.

Caelan2018 · 17/01/2022 21:34

Your stairs are beautiful but carpet does it no justice give it 6 weeks if you still hate it change it life is too short

ilkleymoorbartat · 17/01/2022 21:50

I agree @Caelan2018 but if all the other options fail what could be a good alternative?!!

Have you considered keeping the carpet but adding brass stair rods? It would break up the colour a bit and add some different texture to it. Sorry if someone has already suggested it, I have read quite a lot of the post but not every single one.

MeandT · 17/01/2022 22:21

l think you've covered the problem - wide brown taping against the black tone spindles is a big clash. The carpet itself is a proper neutral. It won't look as light as it does in some of those other settings where the whole staircase is dark, but should be fine if you change the edge binding for a dark slate. Is there a shade in the black spindles? If it's slightly blue or slightly green you can carry that into a new taping - maybe narrower than the current one, ideally not a pure black though. Or maybe a dual shade of green & slate if you want to work a bit of colour in to lift it or go with paintwork in another room. Handrail would probably look best in same shade as the spindles. White would be hard work to look after, and you already have so much in the treads & walls that I don't think a light handrail is the way to go.

Re-edging the runner and painting handrail dark are probably the 2 smallest changes to tie it all up, on top of dressing the walls with prints & plants.

Pamlar · 17/01/2022 22:52

Your door and entry hall look stunning. I love the door, the light fitting and the lovely ceiling. I think the carpet compliments all of the other features without demanding too much focus. Not helpful if you hate it. But from the pics it looks fab

milkyaqua · 17/01/2022 23:19

That is hideous. But if you are going for an office carpeting look, it fits well.

Swampy1958 · 17/01/2022 23:36

I've never been a fan of brown be it carpet or woodwork. But, it looks clean and tidy and better than bare floorboards.
