Cream paint at the edges of the stair runner and patterned African baskets on the walls to echo the colour and texture.

calliecapers · 17/01/2022 17:46

Really nice! And practical too. Keep it!

Stair envy!!

calliecapers · 17/01/2022 17:49

Keep it

You need some plants there and pics on the wall. Something colourful

backtolifebacktoreality · 17/01/2022 17:56

Yes you just need some splashes of colour elsewhere and it will look great!

mylifestory · 17/01/2022 17:57

live with it for a bit and see if you still hate it in a few months time, then change it if you do. Simple!

Empressofthemundane · 17/01/2022 17:59

Lovely staircase.

I think the brown/green in the carpet does not go well with the black spindles and newel post. It’s either recarpet or repaint.

Leedsfan247 · 17/01/2022 18:02

Sorry but it’s awful!
Looks like it’s been there since the 60’s.
Normally runners are colourful and or striped usually picking out a colour from a feature wall, soft furnishings or similar. As the preparation work has been done it shouldn’t be TOO expensive to change it.

CrystalMaisie · 17/01/2022 18:03

I would change the edging, I agree it’s the brown not doing it any favours.

Words · 17/01/2022 18:04

Never, in the history of elegant staircases, has so much been discussed by so many for so few Grin

Loverofoldfilms · 17/01/2022 18:08

Well, I love it.

BOOTS52 · 17/01/2022 18:13

It looks like you have a beautiful home and the staircase is stunning. I would think if you painted the bannister black would it look better as the carpet is fine it is just something is off and I understand what you are saying. But do not get a light coloured carpet on the stairs as it will show up everything and that will not be a good look. I don't like the brown wood on stairs so maybe painting this would be easier and cheaper than removing the carpet which sounds lovely and is nice just that it is missing something to all come together. Am sure you will sort it and enjoy your home.

Bleachmycloths · 17/01/2022 18:14

If you wanted ‘neutral ‘ I can see why you’re disappointed. It’s too brown, masculine, 1950s...
Are you stuck with it because you can’t afford to change it? Understandable. Sell it? Use the money to replace it? Hope you can sort it.

littlebilliie · 17/01/2022 18:17

I would go with burnished stair rods they look elegant and will bring it together

feralcat19 · 17/01/2022 18:17

How about adding gold stair rods to break up the 'brownness?'

Exactly!
ilkleymoorbartat · 17/01/2022 18:24

I think it’s rather gorgeous.

MissPeregrine · 17/01/2022 18:26

I’m so sorry if this has already been mentioned (jacket potato almost done so need to run so I’ve not read through replies) but I’d be tempted to paint the balustrade a lighter colour rather than black, ooh and also, I bloody love your door and hallway, looks awesome imo Star

MissPeregrine · 17/01/2022 18:27

Meant to state, rather the change the carpet

Hplewie · 17/01/2022 18:40

You need to paint the handrail white there are too many different browns - it will lift it

CaraherEIL · 17/01/2022 18:45

Change the edging for black edging it will neutralise the brown of the carpet and create a much more neutral look and I think will look very smart. I think the brown against brown edging is the problem. Brass stair rods to make it look more luxe and loads of plants. Don’t paint the stairs white that would look awful.

CaraherEIL · 17/01/2022 18:46

If you want to change the stairs at all stain the wood of the bannister a darker brown.

ilkleymoorbartat · 17/01/2022 18:48

Was also thinking black whipped edge, so it'd be a much thinner edge. Thank you so much everyone I'm really taking on board all your suggestions.

CaraherEIL · 17/01/2022 18:51

You can see from the other pics you have posted that when you put the carpet against a black or very dark blue paint colour that it views much more like the neutral you wanted. I think a black trim will sort it. Also your front door is beautiful by the way.

Londoncallingme · 17/01/2022 19:00

Not much you can do really - either keep it or change it. What else is there?
I don’t hate it, it’s a bit boring but then my stair carpet is bright coloured stripes.
