Is it very different from what was there before? That might be partly why you don't like it . It can take a while to get accustomed to a new look. Personally I think it looks very smart and practical. How about concentrating on other changes to bring some colour into the space - such as plants or artwork on the walls so the stair carpet is the focus point.

Pr1mr0se · 16/01/2022 13:27

obviously I meant ' so the stair carpet isn't the focus point'. I was too busy looking at your carpet as I typed!

Bunnycat101 · 16/01/2022 13:30

Would painting the stairs darker work? Not sure the different colour bindings on the edited photo does much.

And yea you’re allowed to care about your carpets. It would be a very boring world indeed if the only thing you were allowed to talk about was covid deaths.

evilharpy · 16/01/2022 13:33

It does look better from the front door but still not quite right - I just can't put my finger on what's wrong with it though. Wondering if you need to paint the stairs all the same colour and change the taping to match the stairs, and I think hanging some pictures on the stairs would make a big difference.

Can you photoshop in some stair rods maybe and see if that helps?

BlackSwan · 16/01/2022 13:33

If it makes you feel any better I had a massive sofa reupholstered this week & I immediately hated it. I loved the tiny swatch. My coping mechanism has been to spend a load more money on cushions and a rug to disguise it & to plan changing the flooring underneath it.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 13:33

This first photo is the exact same carpet and was what convinced me to go for it

It's a bit sombre and 'solicitor's office', but it looks smart.

Years ago my DM made this mistake choosing some dark brown curtains (it was the 70s!). They were full length and went all the way round a big bay window. She absolutely loathed them the minute they went up as they were far too overpowering - far worse than your carpet.

It's disappointing to when changes don't match up to your expectations but you will stop noticing it after a while.

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 16/01/2022 13:41

Pictures on the two walls and a plant on the windowsill would make all the difference

Just re-posting this again to give ideas. Taping more like this, with a bit of black, would tone it down a bit and make it look less institutional. Also agree with pp that it would be really lovely to restore the banister and spindles to the original Victorian look, it's a bit of a fusion of different periods at the moment

I note your username @ilkleymoorbartat and in Yorkshire the saying goes if in doubt, do nowt so I really think the best thing to do is to just stop and let it settle in.

It looks fine, maybe you don't love it but it is only a stair carpet not your portrait on a tenner so give it a bit of time and see how the hall looks when the rest of it is not so bare.

Musmerian · 16/01/2022 13:45

I wanted Roger Oates and couldn’t afford it so went for sisal. Went a bit darker as worried about stains and feel the same as you. Cost £60O so I’m going to have to live with it. Pictures on the wall will help.here a photo of mine.

IsItAllOverYetPlease · 16/01/2022 13:45

I think the carpet would look fine if you painted the bannisters white. they look off being different tones, light and dark wood.

MakeUsACuppa · 16/01/2022 13:45

@ilkleymoorbartat

You could do one of three things

  1. If in doubt, tek it out
  2. If in doubt, do nowt
Or my preferred option
  1. Dress it up - blind at window, plants and artwork will make a huge difference, it's very stark now which is why you're focusing on the carpet as there's nothing else to look at.

Good luck OP

Joolsin · 16/01/2022 13:52

I really like the overall look, but the only thing that jars is the brown edging of the carpet. If you redo it in black, I think it will tie together way better. Lovely staircase, btw

Rainbowshit · 16/01/2022 13:53

I think it looks nice! Carpet is maybe a wee bit darker brown that I would choose. I suggest you live with it for a bit before making any decisions.

nopuppiesallowed · 16/01/2022 13:56

Actually, I really like it on the stairs but would put a paler rug on the landing. In fact, I'd gladly swap my carpet with yours (though mine is much older). I chose a deep russet / reddish colour for our hall stairs and landing and it was an ENORMOUS and expensive mistake as our hall is dark anyway. ....I absolutely loathe it and dream of the day someone manages to accidentally spill white gloss paint down the stairs so I can claim it on insurance (of course I won't do this!)

Baggingarea · 16/01/2022 14:00

I think in time you'll be glad it's browner than you expected - covers up muck etc. I think it looks nice but know what u mean. Not a disaster. Incidentally where's it from

LimeJellyforBrains · 16/01/2022 14:02

As a couple of PPs have said, it really is possible to PAINT fabric - Annie Sloan's chalk paint is one option as has been mentioned - so I would paint the edging black. Add a couple of plants (good fakes if you're not a plant person), couple of pictures. This will cost very little, so if after doing this then living with it for a while you're still not happy, only then look at more expensive options.

There is no way this is the same carpet - it's been mislabelled....I suspect that's "Bar Harbour"
FlamingoQueen · 16/01/2022 14:13

I love it. I think a few black framed pictures on the wall at the top of the stairs (with botanicals) and it would look stunning.
Don’t change too much immediately- the look of the carpet may change daily with sunlight etc.

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 14:16

Definitely the same, she says the name in her posts. Second one is photo close up of ours

I like it and it is super practical. Am 100% in agreement that the area needs to be dressed with pictures etc. The lighting seems a bit harsh. Could you put a console with a lamp on the landing? Maybe a huge mirror.

Your house looks stunning and your hallway - very much including the carpet - are fabulous bare bones so it’s just the case of you not being finished yet. Don’t stop decorating/putting a room together too early.

What do you like in terms of decor? How do you want your whole house to look?

Any chance of photos of the other rooms?

ilkleymoorbartat · 16/01/2022 14:21

Would love to post other rooms but worried it’s too outing!!
