Total first world problems I realise. Have attached pics. Gah, I hate it! I don’t know exactly what I’m asking but aibu, and if not what should I do!

I’m not keen on the colour, I think it is too brown but the bigger issue is the banister. If you paint that the stairs will be massively improved.

You could also try replacing the bindings with black. I have a similarly bound carpet on my stairs and they bound it in situ so not too much upheaval.

If I recall though the binding was about 50% of the overall cost (about £1500) so you might want to just bite the bullet and get what you really want.

Seaoftroubles · 16/01/2022 13:01

I love it, it looks smart and practical and won't show the dirt! As others have suggested l think if you add add some gold framed artwork on the walls and some green plants on the landing and on the turn of the stairs and it will look fab.

KeepYaHeadUp · 16/01/2022 13:02

@Whatthefucketyfuck

The handrail is your biggest problem here. Too orangy. Paint it black and you may be able to create a more harmonious look..
👍🏻
Summersdreaming · 16/01/2022 13:02

@EvaLution

Can you photoshop one with a slate blue binding? I'm not in love with those greens, but think the first one brings a nice lightness that draws my eye away from the spindle/handrail/riser, tread differences. I agree that the black adds contrast but I'm finding it a bit heavy and harsh in a way that accentuates all the different elements.

Have you priced having the binding changed?

There is a whole section of MN dedicated to covid hysteria, I suggest you crawl back into it if a carpet thread is upsetting you this much.
SlashBeef · 16/01/2022 13:02

@FrappuccinoLight

150k++ people have died from Covid in the UK so far. Mums, dads, grandparents, brothers, sisters, uncles, aunts, sons and daughters…all gone so unexpectedly and so unnecessarily.

Please do try to get over the fact that your luxury stair carpet is the wrong shade of beige.

Are you not embarrassed to have made such a sanctimonious post? I'm cringing for you. Pop yourself off to the covid board and find something to get suitably hysterical about.
Taoneusa · 16/01/2022 13:02

Your staircase and wooden floor is beautiful. Blue is a beautiful colour, uplifting. If I were you I’d go for the blue edges and get a few blue pieces for the walls.
If you up the % of “beautiful”, then the eye will screen out the % of “dinge” that the carpet contributes.

Summersdreaming · 16/01/2022 13:03

@EvaLution I'm so sorry my phone hates me that was clearly not aimed at you Blush

PegasusReturns · 16/01/2022 13:04

Also you really really should have the carpet start on the first riser.

musketeersmama · 16/01/2022 13:04

@ilkleymoorbartat sorry haven’t RTFT but I think it’s just too bare at the moment & makes you focus on the carpet. I wouldn’t change it at all - rather embrace it & spend some money on plants, artwork etc which will take the focus off the carpet and allow it to harmonise with the other elements. I reckon it will look gorgeous when you take the focus off it and it becomes merely a part of the aesthetic.

Taoneusa · 16/01/2022 13:05

With regard to the cost of changing the colour of the binding. I’m not even joking here - chalk paint is your friend. Annie Sloane does beautiful classic blues. Yes, you can chalk paint it.

Pegasussnail · 16/01/2022 13:06

Oh I love that angle from the front door

Your house is just stunning Flowers

JudgeJ · 16/01/2022 13:07

@Athena101

It looks nice, maybe a little plain? Could you get some gold coloured stair rods to break it up a bit?
That was my thought too though they're incredibly expensive, we found they would have cost as much as the carpet!
Madcats · 16/01/2022 13:08

OP you look to be a bit of a pro with photoshop.

What would it look like if you were to bind in the same colour as the lobby(?) door? Or be radical and paint the treads that colour (assuming that colour is a "keeper")?

I hope you enjoy your new home, anyway (despite the carpet).

Ashard20 · 16/01/2022 13:09

I would put a piece of art on that first wall facing you as you enter the hall, with colours that tie in to your beautiful stained glass door.
Maybe in the style of Rennie Mackintosh or some Art Nouveau?

Pigeonpair1 · 16/01/2022 13:11

I think once you get some pictures on the walls, maybe a plant on that windowsill and perhaps a taller plant on the landing (the bit we can see at the bottom of the stairs) is will look lovely.

backtolifebacktoreality · 16/01/2022 13:11

It's inoffensive. Personally I don't dislike it but I'd have chosen something a bit brighter like this ....

My eyes rolled so hard I think they're stuck. Get off your soapbox, FFS.
Hankunamatata · 16/01/2022 13:13

It's the white walls making the carpet look darker. I like it and it perfect for stairs as hard wearing and won't show the dirt. The white walls need changed

SnoopyLovesLucy · 16/01/2022 13:13

OP your house looks beautiful ( what era is it?) BUT whoever fitted your carpet has made an error.

The carpet should go down to the floor- it's missing one tread. It looks really silly as it is. Sorry :(

I suggest if you hate it, you try to sell it on Ebay or on your local Facebook buying and selling pages, especially if there are other houses near you that may have the same number of stairs.

And that stair carpet is properly fitted as it goes to the floor in the hallway.
PizzaDays · 16/01/2022 13:16

I think the walls and carpet are fine. The black of the spindles is overpowering and 'fights' for attention with the stair runner.

SnoopyLovesLucy · 16/01/2022 13:16

If this is a period house, aren't the spindles out of keeping with the era? They would be white.

You only need one shade of wood. The pale floor in the hall and the pale wood of the banister. The black spindles look weird- more modern.

I still say try to sell it 2nd hand if you hate it.

Life's too short to be unhappy with it.

longtompot · 16/01/2022 13:18

It does look much nicer from the front door than the close up. I think with some statement plants and a nice big picture on the wall with a frame the same colour as your handrail would tie things in more and I think the black edging would tie it in with the spindles. Although all your colours are neutral there are just too many shades. Keeping it down to three shades/colours would make it more cohesive.

Gilly12345 · 16/01/2022 13:19

I personally don’t like it (partial carpet) and yes it is brown so will be durable on a busy area.

Unless you are rich then maybe you will have to live with it for a few years, if you are loaded and money no problem then change but that is very wasteful.

SoupDragon · 16/01/2022 13:23

Ur carpet runner is lovely. Get over it.

@FrappuccinoLight, since being petty is apparently OK with you, I'd like to point out that it's "your" not "ur"
