What kind of fucked-up, dysfunctional workplace is our government operating in?

Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament? Can't get through the day without a suitcase of wine in Downing Street, drugs everywhere in Parliament? Subsidised bars on work premises?

I guess the fact that they tried to make an exemption for the bars in the Houses of Parliament when introducing a curfew for pubs should have been a warning sign that there's far too much reliance on alcohol in our ruling classes.

There was a lot of talk about standards in public life during the Owen Paterson scandal. Surely not being pissed or high on the job is a basic standard?

Aside from the issue that they couldn't even stop having massive piss-ups during lockdown, AIBU to think that something needs to be done to introduce basic rules like 'If you're not safe to drive, you're not allowed to vote in new laws'?

If you wouldn't be happy with a teacher teaching your kids half-cut and would expect rules to prevent this, why should we tolerate our government ruling the country while making their way through the contents of the wine fridge?

People have been posting 'oh yes, it's always been like this'.

Well it shouldn't be in future.

Although there is one report that Starmer avoided a question about the 'beer quaffing' in Durham in the House of Commons in December - he didn't answer/explain then.

I might have been wrong, judging by the defence above clavinova might be a Labour bot sent to make the governments whataboutery line look even more stupid.
Keir Starmer's beer quaffing )( I mean come on- quaffing ffs) being in the same league as Johnson's party antics and his lying about it is in the 'I drove to Barnard Castle to test my eyesight level of ludicrous'. Or 'I attended a party by mistake' level of lying. So good job well done by making the governments line look even more ridiculous.

Are you accusing me of shilling, btw? Who for? This is fascinating.

No, not at all - my comment was to Brindle88.

jgw1 · 16/01/2022 14:38

@Clavinova

daimbarsatemydogsbone you start numerous anti-Tory threads And then Clav tries to turn them into anti-Labour ones

I don't think I've participated in many of noblegiraffe's threads for over a year. She followed me onto a different thread yesterday.

At least Keir Starmer appeared on TV today and explained himself.

Although there is one report that Starmer avoided a question about the 'beer quaffing' in Durham in the House of Commons in December - he didn't answer/explain then.

@Clavinova You are probably more familiar with how the House of Commons works than I am. When was Leader of the Opposition questions introduced?

Talking of answering questions, could you tell us when you think Big Dog actually answered a question that was asked of him at PMQs?

Clavinova · 16/01/2022 14:39

Keir Starmer's beer quaffing )( I mean come on- quaffing ffs)

I believe I am quoting Boris Johnson - he used the word '"quaffing". Grin

This is turning into the four Yorkshiremen sketch, teaching edition.

I refuse to accept £7 bottles of wine are expensive. That must be my toffy, boozy; privately educated privilege, soz.

Part of our catchment area is one of the most deprived wards in the country. If we spent the school's budget on £7 bottles of wine, we'd be able to even less to support the children most in need. You can refuse to accept it all you like, but for many many people, £7 wine isn't even a consideration. They're too just wondering whether they can afford a hot meal today.

Some posters on here seem to think he is Prime Minister...
roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 14:44

@MrsHamlet great, but that's not relevant to what im talking about, at all. When parents are paying £7k a term, it's not unreasonable to provide a glass of wine

Keeps happening. Our resident Tory bots just can’t let it go. Apparently a single pint of beer is a million times worse than 14 - so far - gatherings in Downing Street. 🤷‍♀️

borntobequiet · 16/01/2022 14:48

Parents’ evenings used to be a great opportunity for Y10 Food Tech students to sell rock cakes to a captive and desperate audience. A cup of tea was supplied free though.

Nothing about this takes away from the fact that senior Government figures and their aides and hangers on regularly and blatantly ignored the Covid rules they themselves made, to the extent that they broke the law.

God almighty, how many more? It’s rapidly becoming ridiculous.
roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 14:54

Many more. There's something about working on the parliamentary estate that makes you feel above everything.

Zombiemum1946 · 16/01/2022 14:55

Beginning to wonder if this is actually how Boris caught covid.

Piggywaspushed · 16/01/2022 14:56

To be honest, this is at the heart of the matter - not occasional drinking with a meal, not whether wine and canapes appear at a parents' evening once a year (or other school functions) but the fact that alcohol drinking- in large quantities, late night partying and other excesses is so normalised and culturally engrained that the leaders of our government could not seem to stop doing it when virtually everyone else did and don't understand that most people they represent don't have that alcohol addled work culture in the first place. How does that fit in with the compassion agenda? Levelling up? Family values? It's just one continuous Riot Club to the lot of them.

I watched Keir Starmer this morning. Sophie Raworth was like a dog with a very old bone...
How anyone can seek to compare this to an after hours knees up with DJ sets, a broken swing and suitcases of wine is beyond me.

A clip of Sophie Raworth's interview here -

www.express.co.uk/news/politics/1550807/Keir-Starmer-BBC-Labour-Party-leader-Sophie-Raworth-party-gate-Boris-Johnson-latest-vn

Sophie Raworth is comparing Keir Starmer's meeting with the Number 10 'cheese and wine meeting' - she asks why Starmer's meeting is different and comments that an outdoor meeting would appear to safer than an indoor meeting. Boris Johnson didn't attend 'an after hours knees up with DJ sets, a broken swing and suitcases of wine.'

Which utter falsehoods have I posted?

ClaudineClare · 16/01/2022 15:00

Sophie Raworth was like a dog with a very old bone...

Indeed. A maggotty old bone which no self respecting journalist would bother to dig up.

Yes, yes it absolutely is.

How common do you think that viewpoint and your upbringing is among your fellow government employees? MPs?

It really does explain a a lot.

@Clavinova you are much better at searching the internet than I am, could you find me a clip of when the last time the Prime Minister was interviewed by a TV news or radio broadcaster.

Much obliged.

@Clavinova You have posted repeatedly that Big Dog didn't attend a party in Downing Street on 20th May 2020, even though he himself says he did.
Brindle88 · 16/01/2022 15:07

Sophie Rayworth has do a good job of pumping out pro Boris shite or else the BBC will be punished.

Now they have dared to highlight that our prime minister has been breaking his own rules, there are threats regarding the licence fee.

No wonder our democracy has become so distorted.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 15:08

@noblegiraffe I don't know a single person who would consider £7 wine expensive. It's £30 min in the pub. We're all what I consider normal, in our 30s, live in London, earn more then the average wage but nothing crazy.

I did oblige a previous request for that information not long ago - so the answer is no - stuff to do now.
