What kind of fucked-up, dysfunctional workplace is our government operating in?

Downing Street and the Houses of Parliament? Can't get through the day without a suitcase of wine in Downing Street, drugs everywhere in Parliament? Subsidised bars on work premises?

I guess the fact that they tried to make an exemption for the bars in the Houses of Parliament when introducing a curfew for pubs should have been a warning sign that there's far too much reliance on alcohol in our ruling classes.

There was a lot of talk about standards in public life during the Owen Paterson scandal. Surely not being pissed or high on the job is a basic standard?

Aside from the issue that they couldn't even stop having massive piss-ups during lockdown, AIBU to think that something needs to be done to introduce basic rules like 'If you're not safe to drive, you're not allowed to vote in new laws'?

If you wouldn't be happy with a teacher teaching your kids half-cut and would expect rules to prevent this, why should we tolerate our government ruling the country while making their way through the contents of the wine fridge?

People have been posting 'oh yes, it's always been like this'.

Well it shouldn't be in future.

daimbarsatemydogsbone
you start numerous anti-Tory threads
And then Clav tries to turn them into anti-Labour ones

I don't think I've participated in many of noblegiraffe's threads for over a year. She followed me onto a different thread yesterday.

At least Keir Starmer appeared on TV today and explained himself.

Although there is one report that Starmer avoided a question about the 'beer quaffing' in Durham in the House of Commons in December - he didn't answer/explain then.

motherrunner · 16/01/2022 14:08

@roarfeckingroarr

A few bottles of wine and a bit of food is hardly excessive. Given the cost of the fees, the least they could do was put on a spread!
And there it is.

If you’re wealthy, you feel you are “owed” special treatment.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 14:10

@motherrunner parents evening was a social event. In sixth form you went along too so you could discuss progress like adults. It was hardly champagne on tap.

noblegiraffe · 16/01/2022 14:11

I was on that thread before you were, Clav. Perhaps you followed me.

@Sherrystrull

Our head teacher brings us round a Kit Kat and a cup of tea during the parents evening when the heat has gone off and we're nearing the end.
Ours is long gone by then!
Piggywaspushed · 16/01/2022 14:12

I watched Keir Starmer this morning. Sophie Raworth was like a dog with a very old bone. He did not even say the 'it was within rules at the time' while she parroted out some rules. But he clearly said they were meeting, there was a short break in which takeaways were delivered, they ate/had a drink and then got back to work. There were about 5 people there.

How anyone can seek to compare this to an after hours knees up with DJ sets, a broken swing and suitcases of wine is beyond me.

All they are doing is seeking the 'all politicians lie and are corrupt' line, which is not good for democracy. Keir's apparent blandness saves most from anyone giving it much credence, though - my sixth form think Labour are too prim and proper to have parties.

It’s not right wing posts that make me suspect shills. It’s a set of posters who appear on any thread that puts the government in bad light and derail it.

Does that courtesy extend to posters like noblegiraffe who start anti- government threads?

You are so out of touch though.

I teach to A-level. Our parents evenings are the same as lower school. In and out. Our parents don’t expect wine and canapés - I’m not sure they would understand what a canapé is. They are desperate for their children to improve and to be successful - in a world of wine and canapés.

noblegiraffe · 16/01/2022 14:20

Kids attend to discuss their progress with their parents from Y7. Are they not considered capable of doing that in private schools?

Our out-of-touch toffs could really do with some proper work experience in the public sector before heading for government if that's the sort of upbringing they've had.

MrsHamlet · 16/01/2022 14:21

Parents' evening as a social event is a new one on me. I'd better rethink what I'm going to say to year 9 this week... maybe mail some canapés beforehand.

WindyState · 16/01/2022 14:22

@Clavinova

WindyState No, but then I don't troll every single thread related to the tories with utter falsehoods.

Neither do I.

noblegiraffe · 16/01/2022 14:22

Having to have wine served at parents evening fits with the earlier notion that it's unacceptable to expect people to go an entire evening without alcohol.

OP posts:
roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 14:23

@MrsHamlet that's interesting. I left school a while ago so not sure if they do it there from Y7 now.

Talk of "toffs" isn't helping anyone. It feels a bit silly that so much is being made of a few glasses of wine that probably cost £7 a bottle from Budgens.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 14:24

@noblegiraffe not really. It's more - you're here, let's make the most of the evening.

noblegiraffe · 16/01/2022 14:24

Talking of £7 bottles of wine as if that's cheap isn't helping your case.

OP posts:
roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 14:24

I don't have a case to make! £7 a bottle is pretty cheap around here (London) in supermarkets.

Exactly.

Parents evening is an interim report to discuss progress and improvements for the future.

Another example of independent school’s arrogance - either their pupils do not need improvement or they just don’t care because the have a foot in the door anyway.

Fuck me again.

Presumably you also think the right wing press, many Tory MPs and all Scottish Conservatives are just anti Tory.

🤦‍♀️ that still only makes it cheap if you earn a lot of money.

They are entertaining me greatly at the moment, because all they are doing is perpetuating the threads which makes people more angry about what the government has done. If they just quietly sat in a fridge with Big Dog this would blow itself out more quickly.

noblegiraffe you keep forgetting I'm not a Labour supporter so your posts are not 'gotchas'

I don't think it matters whether you support Labour, the LibDems or another party - you start numerous anti-Tory threads.

@Clavinova Big Dog with his regular "errors of judgement" mean that there are many threads to be started.

My mistake - you posted on Friday and I posted yesterday, but you commented on my post with; Can’t believe Clav...

And I distinctly remember you posting on another thread that you thought I had left Mumsnet - which rather proves my point that I haven't posted on many of your threads in the last year or so.

roarfeckingroarr · 16/01/2022 14:35

This is turning into the four Yorkshiremen sketch, teaching edition.

I refuse to accept £7 bottles of wine are expensive. That must be my toffy, boozy; privately educated privilege, soz.
