We have sides, but I have a thing where in any bed I have to be nearer the door and away from the window....so in our bed at home thats the left side but in the bed we stay in at my parents it's the right side.

RasputinsPickledPenis · 15/01/2022 07:32

We swapped sides after I had a caesarean so I was closer to the bathroom. I hated it. I need my window!

My old boss moved into a 3 bedroom house and didn't have a set bedroom. Every night he and his wife slept in a different room (together) because they couldn't decide which one felt right as their bedroom. He was hilarious.

julesover40 · 15/01/2022 07:32

We always have our own side, wherever we sleep hotels etc it's always the same. I can't even branch out to his side when he's not here, its like a mental block Confused plus we have memory foam mattresses so my side always feels perfect for me.
BTW I sleep nearest the door, think that stemmed from being the lighter sleeper. He would never hear the babies, burglars etc unless I woke him, quicker to deal with myself Grin

CeeceeBloomingdale · 15/01/2022 07:37

A former colleague of mine liked to mix it up, I've never known of anyone else who doesn't have a side, that blew my mind. I always sleep on the left as I have reduced hearing in my left ear so my good ear is in the middle of the bed so I can hear partner, children, burglars Wink etc

Melsonby · 15/01/2022 07:38

In our house dh sleeps closest to the door so the cat will jump on his head first the zombies will get him first.

There's a more practical reason though that we are both side sleepers and we cuddle best from these sides.

When DH is away I sometimes sleep on his side of the bed because it's really comforting but apart from that of course people should have their own sides of the bed.

SquigglePigs · 15/01/2022 07:42

We do, although when we moved house four years ago we swapped sides! I can't even remember why now.

CoalCraft · 15/01/2022 07:43

When DH and I first got together we could not agree on who had which side - we were both used to sleeping on the left side of a double bed. I won though as it was my bed we were sleeping in.

Now it's the same in any bed we sleep in - me on the left, him on the right. In our old house that put him closer to the door, now it's me.

Simonjt · 15/01/2022 07:43

We don’t have a side, usually whoever goes to bed first sleeps furthest from the bedroom door. Now its the person who will do the first half of the night wakings sleeps the same side of the cot.

SilverGlassHare · 15/01/2022 07:45

We’re always me on the right, him on the left, even when we go away…. Unless we’re in a very cramped room and the right side is up against a wall, in which case we swap so I can get out easily to go to the toilet in the middle of the night without waking him.

In our own bedroom it means he’s nearest the door so can protect us against baddies. In theory. But if the baddies are anything like our cats and DS, they’ll just come straight round to my side anyway, even though it’s further away from the door.

onedayoranother · 15/01/2022 07:45

I had a double bed before I met my husband and slept on the left side (except when in one house the left side was against a wall). Then we got together and so did he! So I didn't think it bothered me that much so I moved to right side. He passed away over a decade ago and I moved back to the left.
I tend to sleep on my right side (so facing away from my husband) which he sometimes had a little moan about.

EinsteinaGogo · 15/01/2022 07:50

We do, but I wish we didn't.

I took the left side 25 years ago when we first go together because I was more of a people pleaser then.

I preferred the right, but didn't really mind enough to make a fuss about it.

Now, wherever we go, on holiday, new house, friends - anywhere - I'm still on the bloody left because that's 'my side'.

I would love to mix it up.

MargaretThursday · 15/01/2022 07:54

At home, yes, but when away, no.
I have light issues so I tend to take furthest from the window. When the children were younger I tended to take closer to the door as otherwise they scrambled over dh looking for me at night.
Dh was much better at waking with a tap on the shoulder than a full body landing on him, and I woke anyway.

He gives me the choice when we go away.

galacticpixels · 15/01/2022 07:54

We do technically because we each have a bedside table with our own stuff in/ on it. However occasionally one of us will feel like sleeping on the other side and we'll swap for a few nights or sometimes it ends up being for a few weeks/months.

Sosososotired · 15/01/2022 07:57

Yes I don't like sleeping on dh's side. Unfortunately when ds occasionally comes up to our bed in the night he takes my side, I get forced into dh's side, and dh moves into son's room. It feels wrong!

Unmute · 15/01/2022 08:00

It's not just couples. I sleep alone in a double bed and there's no way I'd change sides. I could sleep right down the middle, or diagonally if I felt like it, but I always sleep on the left.

Newnormal99 · 15/01/2022 08:00

I'm divorced and I still sleep on the same side of the bed.....occasionally I will stretch out to the otherside but I would never sleep there!

rainyskylight · 15/01/2022 08:02

Can you imagine switching the location of your phone charger every night. Argh.

Hellolittlestar · 15/01/2022 08:21

We swapped sides when children where born so I was closer to the door. I actually don’t know which side we would each take in a different bed now, need to go for a holiday to find out.

Bofthebang · 15/01/2022 08:25

My husband and I have been together over 20 years and have always had “our” side of the bed - always the same (me on left, him on right).

We moved home a year ago and bought a new bed and I decided to go mad and mix it up a little, and switched sides 😄 I’m now on the right, he’s on the left. Took a while for it to feel normal but right side sleeping is definitely where it’s at!

JeffThePilot · 15/01/2022 08:25

W do have sides, but have switched them around every time we’ve moved house, thinking about it I’ve always chosen the side nearest the window and my husband has had no say in it 😬

SockFluffInTheBath · 15/01/2022 08:30

Yes we have sides, but our mattress is different on L/R, so if I slept on DH’s side I’d have to sleep on his rock hard mattress.

DontWantTheRivalry · 15/01/2022 08:31

We do and I hate my side of the bed!!

If for any reason my husband is away for the night I love it because then it means I get to sleep on his side Grin

Sausagesausagesausage · 15/01/2022 08:33

We do but we swapped a few years ago when we had our first baby and didn't want him sleeping next to me nearest the draughty window. I sleep nearest the door so it's quicker to get to the kids when they wake.

We don't use our set sides in hotels, it's usually a free for all.

BruceAndNosh · 15/01/2022 08:39

We have a side at home. He's nearest the window, I'm nearest the en suite door.
If we stay in a hotel, it is now unspoken that I always get the "bathroom" side. He'll automatically put his stuff on non bathroom side.
The window is not a deciding factor

BonnesVacances · 15/01/2022 08:44

We don't. DH always likes to be closest to the door, so that's how we sleep wherever we are. It doesn't feel odd to me. If anything, I'd hate to be so stuck in our ways to be otherwise.
