To not understand snobbery against Wetherspoons?

They're really ok. Certainly not worse than McDonalds or your local greasy spoon.

OP posts:
Youhaveyourhandsfull · 14/01/2022 23:56

I loved ours. There were two close to our house in London and while I’d never go to one of them, the other was great. 50 quid for a family meal out including beer is great value.
There’s some good ones all over the place and given drinking in pubs is so ridiculous these days having an affordable option is great.
I’m sure many people don’t love the CEO but we patronize many places/companies without even knowing who the CEOs are so can’t get excited about that.

RightOnTheEdge · 14/01/2022 23:58

balanceo I've seen people actually argue with the staff when they say that they are treated well and that they were not all sacked at the start of Covid Confused

DdraigGoch · 14/01/2022 23:58

@Notoironing

Wetherspoons have some really great pubs in terms of the buildings. An amazing one in Ramsgate which backs directly onto the beach.
I do like how they keep the original features in old theatres. We've just had a thread on how appalling unsympathetic modernisation is.
mumsiedarlingrevolta · 14/01/2022 23:59

we have two in our town-DC call them "posh spoons"and "shit spoons"

Grenlei · 15/01/2022 00:35

I've eaten in plenty of expensive and notionally 'posh' places.

Wetherspoons steak is as good as I've had in restaurants for 3x the price, and every branch (other than the one in Blackpool which was fatty) is consistent. And unlike other establishments they understand what a rare steak is and serve it rare. Unlike the 'gastropub' I went to a couple of years ago where I had to send what was very clearly a medium steak back several times.

My DS's best mate works in our local one - he has no complaints about his employers, quite the opposite. He also says there are a lot of regulars who 'like a drink', some can be a pain at times, but ultimately most are older, often single/ lonely and sit in the pub for hours because it beats sitting at home alone. Many of them really struggled during lockdown because other than going to the pub they often didn't see or speak to anyone. Quite sad really.

Another thing Wetherspoons do really well are the bottomless hot drinks, If I had the sort of job where I could do a bit of work on a laptop in a public place, I'd get myself along there and spend £1.30 on several hours of teas/coffees rather than pay the inflated prices charged by coffee shops!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 15/01/2022 00:35

@jaundicedoutlook

Is it just me, or are there a lot of people on here from Wetherspoons HQ tonight?
What, those of us giving an actual description of how our family and friends who work there are well treated?
ThesecondLEM · 15/01/2022 00:49

The weather spoons in my town is OK, consistently mediocre and we go there occasionally for dinner. I live in a fairly middle class south east coastal town. The weather spoons in the neighbouring town - fucking grim! The weather dooms where DD lives a few towns down the coast - we couldn't tell you, we're not brave enough to go in.

saraclara · 15/01/2022 00:49

When The Guardian, of all papers, consistently (over nearly two decades) names Wetherspoons as one of the best companies to work for, it's hard to argue with that. Though people still do, because they believe the rubbish that was published back in 2020.

saraclara · 15/01/2022 00:51

...and no I definitely don't work for Wetherspoons. Though I appreciate their breakfast with unlimited coffee, which has to be the best bargain in town. And they have REAL sausages!

Wafflesnsniffles · 15/01/2022 01:01

Its the owner thats the problem. Theres a reason why theres a campaign called Neverspoons.

Smorgasborb · 15/01/2022 01:03

@Itsmeandhim

We have one in our town and during the day it attracts retired couples. We tend to go most Thursday lunchtimes (market day) and we have got to know a few people. Ours is divided into 3 areas. Food and drinks for adults. Food and drinks for families. Drinkers. This is what I would call a rough town but there is only 2 men that are there all day.
I'm intrigued how this works! Is there signage? Adults---> Screechy kids-- -> Pissheads
RJnomore1 · 15/01/2022 01:08

Absolutely zero atmosphere As they are too tight to even pay for a performing rights license. Ok for a couple of quick early drinks but fuck that for a night out.

Yawn
PassingByAndThoughtIdDropIn · 15/01/2022 01:15

I tend to avoid them because the owner's such a twat, and some branches are definitely grim, but any of the top ten on this list are perfectly nice.

DdraigGoch · 15/01/2022 01:21

@MrBIobby

And they've got loads of space in the toilets!
That's because they're so far away. You don't need to provide as many toilets when half of your patrons would die of old age by the time they reached them.
TheresSomebodyAtTheDoorNeil · 15/01/2022 01:21

smorgasboard our Wetherspoons is the same, it's unofficial signage. 😂😂😂😂 We call the drinkers end 'the wrong end'. Middle is where the pensioners congregate. And the bottom end is where there's a huge open fire, and the hot drinks machine....... that's mainly families and businessmen who are staying in the hotel above tapping away on laptops.

Why is the Coronet not on that list? An amazing renovation of an art deco cinema, with the safety curtain and other features still in place and huge photos of 30s film stars. It's great.

😂 Fair point. They are miles away.

Fefifobum · 15/01/2022 01:36

The food is shite

...but (in my experience) always clean. Unlike the ones in my local gastropub, with their broken seats and blocked loos.
EeeICouldRipATissue · 15/01/2022 02:57

@Lalliella

What’s not to like about a place where people are downing pints at 10am on a Monday? Where the CEO is a total fascist? Where girls that look about 14 can’t even make it to the loos to throw up? Where there’s a threatening looking unconvincingly attired trans person in the ladies’ loos late at night. Yep, it’s a delight.
@lalliella WTAF are you on about?! Grin As in how do you even manage to shoehorn in a rant about trans people into a Wetherspoons thread and whether the food is good/"too many people drinking at 9am in the morning whatever?! Baffled But not surprised on here anymore lol
catwomando · 15/01/2022 03:19

I've been once.

Filthy carpets, glasses (multiple) with lipstick marks still on. Food was atrocious, staff surly and couldn't cope. A grim experience.

It was bloody cheap though, so I guess you get what you pay for,

ilovesooty · 15/01/2022 03:19

I've never seen a trans person in the ladies' loos in Wetherspoons.

Eleganz · 15/01/2022 03:40

Try and avoid myself. Disagree with how the owner conducts himself. Food isn't very good. The queue of alcoholics outside our local one before they open for breakfast is just sad.

Of course, they aren't the only shit pub chain focussed on selling cheap alcohol to mostly men with some level of drinking problem.

phoenixrosehere · 15/01/2022 03:54

The local ones I went to were horrendous enough that I would never step in it again, and some have been nice. They are just meh to me. They easily fall into the category you get what you pay for and food I could likely make at home myself and since eating out for me is a treat and to eat foods I likely couldn’t make myself t’s not somewhere I want to go especially to eat alone.
