Aibu to suggest sanitary towels have got louder???

Whothe · 13/01/2022 16:35

I don’t recall the sound with my older daughter who now uses other sanitary protection. But every time my younger daughter moves all I can hear is the plasticy sound!!

Are they louder now? Made differently perhaps?

She not long began to menstruate and isn’t ready to use tampons/cup, so I don’t want to rush her into using them but I’m sure she will get there eventually. Neither do I want to embarrass her but if I can hear it, others can! So I want to do/say something but what?

Are different brands better?

And they now have a weird flowery perfume smell.

I don’t know which ones are most perfumed and noisy and it’s not like we can go down to Tesco and sniff / rustle sanitary towels 😂

SheWoreYellow · 13/01/2022 16:48

My bodyform ones don’t rustle and aren’t scented.

gluenotsoup · 13/01/2022 16:48

Yes!! Definitely rustle 😡
I think Always are worst, Bodyform might be a bit better.

Booksandwine80 · 13/01/2022 16:50

Get her some period pants! Game changer.

BlueForYou3 · 13/01/2022 16:50

Have you looked at period pants OP? I started using Cheeky Wipes and they’re brilliant. About £15 per pair and I rotate between 3. I’ve not leaked once and they’re comfortable and discreet. I wish they’d existed when I was younger x

MrsAntonioConte · 13/01/2022 16:54

Are period pants suitable for a heavy flow? I’m very keen!

MajesticallyAwkward · 13/01/2022 16:54

I haven't noticed rustling but I did find they were getting more scented and just horrible feeling, really plasticy and were irritating my skin.

I've swapped to reusable ones and they have changed my life! I'd look into them or period pants for her (you can also get period swimwear if she's a swimmer).

They are, but you need to buy the more expensive ones! Modibodi do some for heavy flow which are great. The cheaper ones I tried from primark and Sainsbury’s were ok for the last few days, but not the heavy ones !
BlueForYou3 · 13/01/2022 16:57

@MrsAntonioConte I wore them during my MC and didn’t leak through once so have complete confidence in them. Just make sure you buy ones designed for a heavy flow x

DustyMaiden · 13/01/2022 16:59

Has she removed the adhesive cover?

MrsAntonioConte · 13/01/2022 17:00

Oh wow! Yes I’ll definitely try these. Thank you! I have endometriosis and it’s a monthly struggle. I’ll probably need sanpro for the first couple of days and hopefully switch to period pants for the rest! x

So sorry about your mc @BlueForYou3 Flowers

Ariela · 13/01/2022 17:00

Cloth ones are silent.

BlueForYou3 · 13/01/2022 17:08

@MrsAntonioConte Thank you Flowers

Tumbleweed101 · 13/01/2022 17:11

Body form are the brand my young teens use and they seem unscented and don't make a noise.

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2022 17:12

Yep. Washable pads and/or period pants are the way forward, OP.
BreadmanAndCake · 13/01/2022 17:15

Definitely go for cloth sanitary towels. They're brilliant, I haven't looked back. Bloom and Nora ones are great.
If she isn't keen, always do a sensitive version which are good.

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 13/01/2022 17:16

I switched to reusable ones and have noticed my period is less painful as well

Just me that sniffs them in the supermarket then......and yes, I wear a mask, they smell so strong you can smell them through it!!
Exhausteddog · 13/01/2022 17:21

I've noticed it with DD (only this week - although she's been having periods for over 2 years) ) she is also not keen to use internal protection and I don't think she trusts the idea of period pants.
AFAIK she is wearing bodyform.

Gensola · 13/01/2022 17:21

You can get organic cotton ones that don’t rustle - Natracare is the brand, on Amazon or in Waitrose or health food shops. They look exactly like normal ones but are fully biodegradable.

Gensola · 13/01/2022 17:22

Sorry should make clear that Natracare are disposable, but made from natural materials.

ABitOfAShitShow · 13/01/2022 17:28

These ones make no noise www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B098TG1D3C?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21 and feel really lovely compared to the ‘normal’ ones.

walkwalk · 13/01/2022 17:30

Another vote for Natracare, I get them on Amazon. Less suitable for a very heavy flow, So I use them from day 2 or 3, no noise, no scent, super comfortable.

PinkWednesdays · 13/01/2022 17:41

It depends on which ones you use. Some are more rustly than others.

I use Always Platinum and I find them very quiet.

Fully biodegradable is a bit pointless.

They all get chucked in the bin inside a plastic non biodegradable degradable bag which then gets chucked in a massive pile and likely buried or its off to the incinerator and burnt.

Either way, they aren't going to biodegrade in any meaningful way or any quicker than plastic one.
