Aibu to suggest sanitary towels have got louder???

Whothe · 13/01/2022 16:35

I don’t recall the sound with my older daughter who now uses other sanitary protection. But every time my younger daughter moves all I can hear is the plasticy sound!!

Are they louder now? Made differently perhaps?

She not long began to menstruate and isn’t ready to use tampons/cup, so I don’t want to rush her into using them but I’m sure she will get there eventually. Neither do I want to embarrass her but if I can hear it, others can! So I want to do/say something but what?

Are different brands better?

Another shout out for period pants. I tried some because I couldn't stand the perfumed pads on sale these days and there'll be no going back. Recently got some from Ohne and they are really soft and have some good colours which may be more tempting for a young teen.

Gensola · 13/01/2022 18:36

@00100001 or they go in your home hot composter and break down very quickly. You know nothing about me so take your patronising and judgemental comments elsewhere Smile

falalalalalalablahblah · 13/01/2022 18:37

Always are hideous. Get her something better - the Flo bamboo ones are very good I find :-)

ShinySquirrel · 13/01/2022 18:38

@Gensola

You can get organic cotton ones that don’t rustle - Natracare is the brand, on Amazon or in Waitrose or health food shops. They look exactly like normal ones but are fully biodegradable.
Seconding these. They're great.

I can guarantee the majority of biodegradable nappies/wipes/pads are being thrown in the bin.

So it's a waste and just a marketing ploy.

Well done you for having the space and inclination to get a hot composter.

Sammilouwho · 14/01/2022 09:05

Another vote for period pants! I've got the cheeky wipes ones and they do little packs for teenagers with the pants and reusable pads too.
They are brilliant, I've bought some more for after I've given birth :)

BrightYellowDaffodil · 14/01/2022 09:08

Haven't noticed the rustling but there's definitely a trend towards scented stuff. I don't want my fanjo to smell of cheap pot pourri, thanks very much Hmm

Didioverstep · 14/01/2022 09:23

Can I ask. Period pants? Do you put any form of pad in them? Is not uncomfortable and wet if you go to the loo and only them back up? Sorry to ask but I have been thinking of changing my San Pro too but I just can't get my head around the pants

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/01/2022 09:27

Lilettes pads don't rustle, and they do small sized ones for younger girls.

CornishSeaSwim · 14/01/2022 09:35

Wear Em Out pads are a complete game changer. Never had a problem or leak with them, you can just chuck them in the washing machine and they look like new every time. None of the nasty chemicals that are often found in disposable pads too!

Pendolino · 14/01/2022 09:38

Period pants are brilliant. Total game changer. Love my Modibodi ones.

Peachesandcream15 · 14/01/2022 09:40

Cloth sanitary pads are silent and far comfier!

EmmaH2022 · 14/01/2022 09:40

Yanbu OP

I used to just buy them anywhere but now there's a noise issue as well as the perfume. So annoying.

Peachesandcream15 · 14/01/2022 09:42

@didioverstep period pants are not like pads. I completely forget I have my period. The material they use is very absorbent. Get one pair to start and see how you find them.

Cocona · 14/01/2022 09:50

I normally use tampax but like to have pads in too for a break. I sniff and squeeze packs of pads in the shops and I'm not embarrassed. The smell on some is so overpowering and yes to what a PP said, like cheap pot pourri!

I've bought a pair of period pants from Primark recently and they've taken over for my tampax breaks now. They manage a fairly heavy flow fine, they don't feel wet being pulled back up after a wee and they feel really discreet. I would get your daughter a pair or two to try out. I wish they were available when I was a teen and used pads more (and more recently I wish I'd known about them for the afterbirth weeks of bleeding!).

BlingLoving · 14/01/2022 09:55

I'm not sure I've ever had pads rustling? I always used Always. Is she removing all the sticky bits? Because I've made that mistake in the past, and usually the rustling was a sign!

Having said that, I 100% agree with the period pants suggestions. Mine have changed my life. But more importantly, I've seen lots and lots and lots of reports that they are game changers for young girls.

I have quite heavy days and a tendency to flood so have found the very heavy duty Modi Body ones the best - which are admittedly more expensive. On lighter days I've got the love luna cheaper ones which are fine or the less hardcore modi bodi ones. For the person who asked - except if I am having a flooding moment, the absorption seems to be quicker and easier than with a pad so it feels dry. If I flood and am sitting somewhere quietly, after a little while it's all absorbed and is okay. Otherwise I might zip to the bathroom and change them, for comfort purposes more than anything else.

Snoopsnoggysnog · 14/01/2022 09:57

I haven’t noticed the rustling but I agree about the scent - awful. I’m also looking to change to period pants so following with interest.

OP for your DD I would experiment with a few different brands and avoid the really absorbent plasticky ones. Try boots or Superdrug own label which are cheap and I think less plastic.

I’ve never once heard someone’s pad rustling. Are you sure she’s taking off the backing and sticking it down? Or is she using one that’s too long or big for her if she’s physically small?

RobinPenguins · 14/01/2022 10:04

I haven’t noticed rustling but had started to find them all a bit plasticy and they made me feel sweaty. I switched to a combination of period pants and reusable pads and much prefer it.

makingmiracles · 14/01/2022 10:05

I use modibodi, I have the light-moderate full briefs but don’t use them for periods as pill means I’ve not had them for years. I have a heavy going job in a v warm environment and I sweat a lot, I used to get giant sweat patches between my thighs and I would like like I’d peed myself, these are a game changer as no more sweat patches down below on my trousers!

Would like to hear from people who use the mod-heavy ones though- my daughter will be starting periods any day and I am thinking of getting her some. I know at her age I would flood all the time, I had very heavy periods in my teens, can they stand up to the job for 7/8 hrs whilst at school? I guess she could use them with a reusable pad but then I’d worry what she would do with that if that got logged during the day.

BabyPigeon83 · 14/01/2022 10:11

Another vote for period pants. I like wuka abd modibodi. Modibodi have a teen range I believe, but I like tbe seamless ones because they are very comfy. They are not cheap and are an investment, I try to get them on sale and fallow the washing instructions to prolong their life and not destroy their absorbing quality.

ILoveAllRainbowsx · 14/01/2022 10:12

Tesco's own towels don't rustle.

Flapjak · 14/01/2022 10:18

What do you do with cloth period pads / pants when you are out at work for 12 hours, carry the used one in your handbag for 12 hours ?

BlingLoving · 14/01/2022 10:20

The really heavy duty ones do seem to be pretty robust, yes.

I have also got into the habit of taking a spare pair in my bag with a nappy sac to put the old one into to then shove in my handbag. I've only actually had to do it once though (and as a result, DH recently found a a pair I'd lost when was emptying a handbag that needed tossing! Grin)

Hemingwayzcatz · 14/01/2022 10:28

Always recall them being noisy. I remember feeling really conscious of it at school and cursed the plastic packaging.

Misreadprob · 14/01/2022 10:32

@Flapjak you can get little waterproof bags with wet and dry sides that you just chuck in the wash. I have one from bloom and Nora, DD has one from mama designs.
