Neighbour's kid

claramaria · 13/01/2022 12:11

The neighbours a few doors down from us send their child to the same school that mine attend.
A few morning recently I've seen neighbour walking kid to school (she's in Year 1) eating a packet of crisps. Seriously. At 8.30am. Maybe that's all the kid gets in the way of "breakfast". Kid is overweight (as are parents) and it upsets me to see a young child walking to school eating a packet of crisps for breakfast.
I was brought up in a culture where children eat healthy, nourishing breakfast at home (or at before school club), not crisps in the street. AIBU to find this an upsetting sight?

OP posts:

If it were the only thing the child had to eat I agree it isn't the healthiest BUT yabu in your judgy tone and assumptions.

BlueSky8 · 13/01/2022 12:15

You have no idea of the situation.
The child may have screamed the house down, refused breakfast, therefore running late and it was the only thing she could get into him before school.
You've got no idea.

RedHelenB · 13/01/2022 12:23

A common sight round here. I thought you were going to write something far worse.

Raquelos · 13/01/2022 12:24

YABU. You are also being nosy and judgy

ArbleMarchTFruitbat · 13/01/2022 12:25

This is a very judgemental OP. Are people meant to rush to post their examples of overweight children eating rubbish food so we can all have a good sneer?

Seeline · 13/01/2022 12:25

At least they are walking to school.
The judgement on another thread at the moment about a mother daring to drive her DC to school is unbelievable!

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 13/01/2022 12:25

But it's not really any of your business. I know it maybe doesn't look good but you don't know the background or full story.

SlashBeef · 13/01/2022 12:25

A kid eating a bag of crisps is an upsetting sight? You need to get out more mate.
It's not an ideal breakfast as its low in nutrients but it's not your child or your business and certainly not worth being upset over.

DropYourSword · 13/01/2022 12:26

It’s pretty shit for the kid, but at the same time you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors in other people’s houses.

And the “healthy nourishing breakfast” comment sounds irritatingly smug.

danni0509 · 13/01/2022 12:27

Oh for fuck sake, what is it with these posts on here today, people getting so worked up by what another family are doing with their own child.

She's hardly walking past you smoking a crack pipe.

Haha judgemental OP much, try living where I live. I kid you not, one lunch time. I watched a lady buy a small tray of donner meat and chips and give it to her kid in the pram and walk off Shock.

OP would have self combusted 🤣
Andtheyalllookjustthesame · 13/01/2022 12:34

Would it upset you on the walk home from school? Is the problem the crisps or the time of day?

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 13/01/2022 12:34

It's a small snapshot of their day. Might not be ideal but you have no idea of the circumstances surrounding this.

Hellodarknessmyoldpal · 13/01/2022 12:35

If I saw this my first thought would be ARFID/selective eating and/or Autism, tbh

Dustyroad63 · 13/01/2022 12:36

My granddaughter has autism and will only eat certain food or not eat at all.
It’s not the healthiest of food but it keeps her alive while my daughter tries her hardest to stealthily get some goodness into her.
You know nothing about their situation so you are being very judgemental and it’s something my daughter has to put up with people like you judging.

HerbErtlinger · 13/01/2022 12:41

My 4 year old sometimes will only eat a packet of crisps for breakfast. He's not overweight, he's very little. I HATE that he will only eat Crisps but if its that or nothing (and believe me I've tried all options and incentives) I'd rather he went to school with at least something in his tummy

HelloNope · 13/01/2022 12:43

My daughter (almost 3) is being assessed for Autism, she's tiny and still in 9-12 month clothing, she won't eat fruit or veg and she's in the 0.3 percentile. She takes ages to eat breakfast and on the days we have Pre school she has a chocolate croissant on the way there in the pram.

I can see people staring at her 1) because she looks like a 1 year old eating a croissant 2) because it's a chocolate one and whatever else they're thinking.

But what they don't know is that she used to have a feeding tube and I'm bloody glad she's eating at all!

Stop being so judgemental. You don't know what's going on in petioles lives.

MayThePawsBeWithYou · 13/01/2022 12:47

How do you know thats all she had for breakfast.

Handholding587 · 13/01/2022 12:49

I wondered how long it would be before someone called 'autistic.'
It seems to be only on MN can a child do something as innocuous as eating a bag of crisps before they get a label of potential autism.

Xmassprout · 13/01/2022 12:50

Would you rather the kid went hungry?

Don't get me wrong, I can kind of see where you're coming from. But you just see a tiny snapshot and have no idea what goes on in their lives

MehhyMehMeh · 13/01/2022 12:52

It's not ideal but you should try to mind your own business and not judge.

My middle chid is extremely challenging, most morning she refuses to eat breakfast, I've been known to let her have junk just to get some food in her in the morning. She's overweight (my other two are slender) and I also gained a lot of weight over lockdown, so we're most likely judged a lot by people like you.

You've no idea what's going on in people's lives or what struggles they're facing. At least the kid is getting something to eat, and some might argue a packet of crisps is no worse than sugary breakfast cereals which is the norm for many.
