How often should I shower?

Ok so I'm having a few drinks with friends last night. We are all female a mix of parents and non parents. One friend mentions she is struggling to find time for o shower every day since she had her baby. I said "well I don't shower every day without a young baby," All of my friends looked at me in horror. Apparently even the ones with kids shower daily. Full disclosure I have two dd one under five and I work part time. I shower on work days plus one extra day so usually three times a week my days off usually consist of playing at home, walking dog, school run and maybe park. I would shower extra if exercising/having sex/on period etc. I bath my dc three times a week. My oh works out every week day so he does shower more than me. AIBD? (Disgusting 😂)

I shower everyday but honestly just do what suits you.

givememykeys · 12/01/2022 12:54

@thecapitalsunited

The only time I don’t shower every day is when I’m depressed. Then I can’t find the energy for it. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t shower every day.
How does that work? Does everyone you know have to confirm their showering habits? Do you give them a questionnaire before you have anything to do with them? Does it have to be updated for changes?

You either only know the people in your own home or have the most weird conversations to be sure about that for every single person you know or it's simply not true.

Which one is it @thecapitalsunited ?

AskItaliano · 12/01/2022 12:55

That's grim, sorry.

Unless you have a skin condition that means your skin is harmed by daily showering, have a bloody shower each day!

Anyone thinking that 'pits and bits' (vom) in the sink is adequate is awful too.

You might think you're getting away with it but I guarantee other people can tell.

Keepitonthedownlow · 12/01/2022 12:55

There is a weird obsession with showering in mumsnet. It's bad for your skin and the planet to shower every day. Also, a 2 minute shower is hardly any better than a quick sink wash.

Walking4You · 12/01/2022 12:57

Well the NHS website says twice a week is enough….

saraclara · 12/01/2022 12:58

The posters who like to shower every day, fine. Do what you're comfortable with. But you don't get to tell people who don't, that they're gross and smelly. Because unless they have particularly bad BO issues, they're not. There's been loads of articles in the media saying that showering daily is bad for the skin. Unless you've been heavily exercising, alternate days is fine.

mam0918 · 12/01/2022 12:59

I never get the shower daily crowd, same as the people who over wash their hair - it's not normal, natural or healthy to constantly wash your body's protective layer away.

I too have had 'shocked' responses, people claiming I MUST suffer from things like athletes' foot etc... if I don't shower daily and it's hilarious, I have never suffered any hygiene issues in my life.

PattyPan · 12/01/2022 13:00

Sounds fine to me. Showering daily isn’t good for your skin.

How the hell would anyone be able to tell if you've washed every part of you that can smell?

MaybeHeIsMyCat · 12/01/2022 13:01

I think it depends how you wash too
Slosh of shower gel or actually washing with soap all over and in between toes, feet, legs, back etc

MiniPumpkin · 12/01/2022 13:01

I shower or bath every day. Hair is washed about every 4 days, it’s extremely thick and between showering and blow drying it’s about 90mins. It would never be manageable to wash it every day .When I had my first baby I would often wait for dh to come home then I’d have a bath in peace. However with dc2 I’m more organised and 90% of the time I shower before he leaves as if I don’t I just feel rubbish. Each to their own ! No judgement here!

Hottbutterscotch · 12/01/2022 13:02

I shower everyday but I also wash my entire body with a combination of a soft cloth and an exfoliating one and then I moisturise from head to toe. I don’t know how that could take anyone two minutes.

When I’ve spoken to people about this they say they either don’t moisturise or do so very infrequently. Ergh

Frollop · 12/01/2022 13:02

I found that strong body odour could be smelt early in the morning on the tube. I put that down to not washing/no deodorant possibly.

I prefer to wash everyday.

You're wrong. And judgemental. Not sorry
Arabellla · 12/01/2022 13:03

I shower 3 x per week every and wash my hair twice a week.

I also look about 10 years younger than all the people I went to school and work with. Not do I have to dye my hair.

I think they’re linked.

gelatodipistacchio · 12/01/2022 13:04

My showers are very hot. My skin is dry enough - it would be an absolute wreck if I showered daily.

Hugasauras · 12/01/2022 13:05

Honestly don't think it matters, OP. MN gets very heated about it but in the real world I think there's a total mix of approaches. From the guests we've had over the years, some want to shower daily and others don't, and none have smelled.

All the handwringing and claiming someone can smell if someone hasn't showered that morning is a load of old shite anyway, not sure why people enjoy lying about that so much, but it seems to be some weird badge of honour. I'm sure you smell absolutely fine and it's no one's business but yours.

Fraternaltwin · 12/01/2022 13:06

Every day. I’m sorry but having a baby is a poor excuse for not showering every day. It takes minutes. Three times a week is disgusting. I dread to think how bad your bits smell. I can’t imagine leaving them for a few days.

IamGusFring · 12/01/2022 13:08

The only person I know who doesn't shower every day is my dirty teenage stepson.

TyrannosaurusRegina · 12/01/2022 13:08

I personally shower every day, but it's just what you're used to. If I scaled them back to every other day then I'd get used to it and I'm sure I'd be fine.

Does he roll around in soil?
TwinkleToeMatilda · 12/01/2022 13:09

Everyday without a fail. I didn’t realise not showering every day was this common. But each to their own!

Maybe if yours smell after a day you've over washed and upset your natural pH balance, I'd visit the Doctor if I were you!

I think you need a trip to the GP if you smell so bad after a missed shower.

You know the shower habits of every one of your family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, and acquaintances? Why?
