I phoned my friend this evening to wish her a Merry Christmas & ask how her pg was going. My best mate is 41+5 weeks pg & a midwife came to do a sweep but it was'nt her regular midwife. She told her the usual that she should go into labour very soon blah blah, however, they said that with her DD 1 and she ended up getting to nearly 43 weeks & had to be induced.

The midwife told my friend that the best way to get into labour is to have sex but to swallow is more effective, my friend said "what do you mean by swallow" and she said "you know, oral". She wan't even laughing about it either.

I really cant believe a trained professional would say something like this. Should she report this midwife? I told her she should. I would be furious. Is she being unreasonable to report her because of this comment?

I would most definatly report her. Why assume all women do 'that' anyway. And what woman at that stage of pregnancy would even be thinking of doing 'that'. Stupid woman.

hercules1 · 26/12/2007 10:51

How is she stupid?
A woman with many years of training giving advice

Blandmum · 26/12/2007 10:56

But this is a biological fact.

Why get prissy about it?

Would you get annoyed about a nurse talking about the need to have a dump, or urinate?

It is just a bodily function. If your friend didn't like the advice, she could just refuse to floow it.

I'm assuming the midwife didn't do a demo, or produce a donor???

coldtits · 26/12/2007 10:57

I personally was a rampant whore at 41 weeks pregnant.

our friend was given advice, not a demonstration. YABU.

coldtits · 26/12/2007 10:57

LOL X posted MB

Blandmum · 26/12/2007 10:58

aw, go on, we all know that you are just a tart at the best of times!

THelesbellsRINGOUTFORCHRISTMAS · 26/12/2007 11:00

What a funny thread. I could understand a complaint if she suggested your friend give a pig a BJ but blimey, its advice fgs.

As others have said, she didn't order her to do it. I was advised to drink castor oil - but I didn't like it so i just thanked her for the advice.

I'm sure your friend has the wisdom not to do it if she doesn't want to

TenLordsaLapin · 26/12/2007 11:01

OH yes my midwife told me this. I said "Not likely!" and we had a giggle about it.

Some amazingly prissy attitudes on here. Referring to oral sex as "that" FGS.

Look, if you're pregnant you must have done "it" (for those delicate ones amongst you who can't cope with the word SEX) at least once, so why act the outraged virgin!

Blandmum · 26/12/2007 11:02

I have a MW friend who regularly recommends nipple twiddling. And as she says it is actually more effective if the DH/P does it.

Should she be stripped nekked and whipped through the streets for giving good advice that has restarted many a stalling labour?

HappyChristmasWalrusIsOver · 26/12/2007 11:07

well, tickle my tits til tuesday - preganat woman have oral sex

Fair play to anyone who can manage it at 41 weeks, I say. I was too fat to even brush my hair at that stage

HappyChristmasWalrusIsOver · 26/12/2007 11:08

And my MW told me this as well.

She was a bloody good MW

Unfortunately, she had to say it when DP was present - so afterwards, everytime I moned about being 2 weeks overdure, he got glint in his eye

My norks were so big at 40 weeks that people in the next room could have done it for me.

And TBH at that point I couldn't give a monkeys if it was dh, me or the massed ranks of the coldstream guards that did the twiddling.

I just wanted to GET THIS BABY OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!

HappyChristmasWalrusIsOver · 26/12/2007 11:11

Maybe all thse woman had a visit from the stork.

Maybe they listened to my Granny, who said "Kepp your hand on your ha'penny, and makesure that he keeps his langer for weeing with"

hercules1 · 26/12/2007 11:11

Well, from reading this thread alone it seems like pretty standard advice given to women on a regular basis.
How sad it would be if mws became fearful of doing so because of the occasional person who might take offence.

The world really has gone complaint mad...

TenLordsaLapin · 26/12/2007 11:11

You know, there is some disgusting advice being given on the Conception threads... some people even mention the penis [shudder]

Actually, that's such an appropriate emoticon!

Blandmum · 26/12/2007 11:14

And if women are not given reasonable , natural advice on how to kick start labour, one assumes that there will be more women needing medical intervention.

And in general I thought this was considered to be a bad thing.

Bouncingturtlewithtinsel · 26/12/2007 11:17

Well I'm back from hospital, last thing I said to MW was "Should I try application of oxytocin and prostaglandin" and she said yes, oral application works best! She also suggested nipple stimulation too.
Should I complain about her?

Actually she's on tomorrow night so hoping that I'll go into proper labour today as she was so lovely - a real grandmotherly type, felt so comfortable with her

hercules1 · 26/12/2007 11:18

Did you just not ask for some pig love juice?

Bouncingturtlewithtinsel · 26/12/2007 11:23

I was way more grossed out by the pig semen, I'm afraid!

Blandmum · 26/12/2007 11:34

me too! I hope you get the Midwide you want BT, fingers crossed for you.

This is rather like an ancient thread where someone was upset because their dc had the word 'Anus' in a set of spelling to learn for primary science.

The OP was terribly good natured about it. But I was astonished that anyone could be upset at the proper name for the old Bum Hole

boredandfat · 26/12/2007 18:23

Why is it more effective to have sex orally than vaginally to kick start labour? Curious as I always thought it was vaginally.

Bouncingturtlewithtinsel · 26/12/2007 18:42

Apparently it's because the prostaglandins are more readily absorbed through the gut.

boredandfat · 26/12/2007 18:44

Bouncingturtle -OK thanks for that info.
