To have eaten the prawns?

Purchased said prawns from Tesco on Saturday evening at around 7pm. The sealed packet was left in the bottom of the shopping bag in a cool kitchen until around 7am Sunday morning, when they went into the fridge.

Today I ate them all (cold) in a salad for dinner.
Tasted fine Smile

Do you think I need to be worried?

YABU- I’ll probably be fine.
YANBU- Prepare to be ill.

12 hours out of a fridge, they will have been above 8 degrees for most of that time which allows bacteria to grow, I would not have eaten them, and any retail/hospitality place would absolutely have thrown them. No idea if theyl make you sick or not but I don’t really understood why you ate them.

If the packet was swollen in anyway, or went pupfff when you opened it, you're screwed.
If your kitchen is as cold as mine overnight you'll be fine.

I just didn’t want to waste them. They smelt and tasted okay 🤷‍♀️.
Although now it is playing on my mind.

If I am ill it will teach me a lesson about putting things away properly I suppose.

I’m relaxed with food hygiene but that’s beyond the pale OP. Seafood is really dangerous if not kept cold.

Why didn't you put them in a fridge when you bought them home?
I wouldn't have touched them with a bargepole so I think eating them was a stupid idea. I hope you don't get ill but you should be more careful in future. The results of eating improperly stored seafood is hardly a secret.

I wouldn't have eaten them, but you'll probably be fine. I've eaten thing by accident before and thought I was definitely getting ill but then been fine

It’s nice to not be wasteful OP, but so is following basic food hygiene! If it’s milk give it a sniff, if it’s seafood throw it! Hopefully if they smelt find and the packaging wasn’t blown you’ll be fine though.

The packet didn’t go ‘puff’ when I opened it 🤞
I assumed that as the packet was sealed they would stay fresh for longer, and that they would probably smell iffy if they were off.

Time will tell…

OP, bacteria and the toxins they produce don’t immediately cause a smell once they hit the required load to cause illness Hmm Which is why they have to be kept in a fridge or freezer, as they grow rapidly at ambient temps.

If you make it to 48 hours without vomiting or the runs, I’ll be surprised.

Usually fish gets a stronger smell of fish when off. tbh I wouldn't have eaten them myself especially prawns. Depends on your stomach you could be fine.

I have eaten prawns which travelled with me from Reno to Burning Man and then spent three days in barely chilled water in a cooler box in 50 degree heat in the Nevada desert. Several times.

Most things we eat have a certain level of bacteria on or in them, particularly in the case of meat and fish generally; and use by dates and handling instructions aren’t an exact science. Plus I can guarantee that you’ll have eaten, many times, chilled products which haven’t been stored correctly in the supermarket warehouse or which have been previously taken from the fridge by one customer, abandoned in the biscuit aisle for several hours, and then just returned to the fridge by an assistant when discovered.

If I remember correctly from last semester, anything above 4 degrees is optimum growth temperature, and should be thrown away if left out for more than 1-2 hours.

I'm pretty lax but would never risk it with seafood. Gives the worst kind of bodily explosions when it goes wrong.

DH left a bag of shopping in our uninsulated porch last week. It contained 2 bags of finest frozen raw prawns. That was the coldest night of the year and when the bag was found early the following morning, the prawns were still mostly frozen. So I left them in the fridge for the day and cooked them that evening. That's as kamikaze as I would ever go with seafood and in pretty laid back.

@ComtesseDeSpair yes but not enough to cause illness, thanks to fridges and freezing. Which stops bacteria replicating and reaching an amount that can make us very, very sick.
